Unrest at the Nevados de Chillán volcanic complex: a failed or yet to unfold magmatic eruption?
2018
Resuming erupting activity at volcanoes that have been long quiescent poses a significant challenge to hazard assessment, as it require assessment of whether the change in activity is an isolated event or the beginning of a new eruptive sequence. Such inception is often poorly characterised as quiescent volcanoes tend to be poorly equipped and not extensively monitored, especially with respect to gas geochemistry. Here, we report gas composition and flux measurements from a newly opened vent at the very onset of eruptive activity at the Nevados de Chillán volcanic complex (Chile) in January-February 2016. The molar proportions of H2O, CO2, SO2, H2S and H2 gases are found to be 98.4, 0.97, 0…
Soil Erosion on Mountain Trails in Eastern Iberian Peninsula
2020
A review on trial erosion shows that soil erosion rates are one to three orders of magnitude higher than the ones recommended as sustainable. This is threatening the sustainable managements of mountain terrains, mainly in the popular hiking paths. The warm temperatures characterize Eastern Spain in winter, which results in visitors from northern Europe to walk in the coastal land mountainous terrain. This increases the pressure to the currently highly visited most popular paths. We selected representative transects of the trails of Serra de Bérnia, Puigcampana, Penyagolosa, Montcabré, Serra del Sit, Aitana, Les Tres Creus, Caroig, Cupurutxo and Circ de la Safor. All the selected study sites…
Polkujuoksu : juoksuharrastus kohtaa luontokokemuksen
2017
Juoksuharrastuksesta eriytynyt polkujuoksu on suosiotaan vahvasti 2010-luvulla kasvattanut liikuntamuoto. Käsillä oleva tutkimus on ensimmäinen suomalaista polkujuoksuharrastusta kartoittava liikuntasosiologinen tutkimus. Polkujuoksuharrastusta taustoitetaan teoreettisesti vapaa-ajan elämäntavan, luontoliikunnan sekä kestävyysliikunnan ilmiönä. Tutkimukselle on asetettu neljä tutkimuskysymystä: 1) Ketkä harrastavat polkujuoksua? 2) Miten polkujuoksua harrastetaan? 3) Kuinka kiinnittyneitä polkujuoksun harrastajat ovat harrastukseensa? 4) Miten polkujuoksijat haluaisivat liikuntamuodon kehittyvän? Polkujuoksun harrastajakartoitus toteutettiin määrällisenä tutkimuksena. Tutkimusta varten laad…
Górnicze miejsca pamięci jako tworzywo do opracowania tematycznego szlaku kulturowego w przestrzeni Rudy Śląskiej
2019
Relationship between cognitive performance and mobility over the life course
2018
We studied cross-sectional, longitudinal and temporal associations between executive function and life-space mobility in old age. We assessed the association between intellectual ability in early adulthood and physical functioning in old age, and the association between early life motor development and cognitive performance in early old age. The participants of the first dataset were 157 persons aged 76-91 y who were followed up for two years as part of the Life-Space Mobility in Old Age study, and who took part in measurements on executive function (EF) implemented with the Trail Making Test and Life-Space Assessment. The second dataset comprised persons from the Helsinki Birth Cohort Stud…
Executive function and life-space mobility in old age
2018
Life-space assessment incorporates all movements in terms of the distance from home, the frequency of movement and the need of assistance for movement. Executive function (EF) is an important higher order cognitive ability that controls and guides people’s goal-directed actions. We examined the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between EF and life-space mobility, and investigated if perceived walking difficulties, lower extremity performance, and transportation difficulties explain the association. Methods 157 community-dwelling persons aged 76–91 years participated in the study at the baseline, and 103 of them in 2-year follow-up study. Based on the distribution on the Trail Ma…
Neurocognitive impairment and psychosocial functioning in bipolar II disorder
2011
Sole B, Bonnin CM, Torrent C, Balanza-Martinez V, Tabares-Seisdedos R, Popovic D, Martinez-Aran A, Vieta E. Neurocognitive impairment and psychosocial functioning in bipolar II disorder. Objective: There is a growing body of evidence on neurocognitive impairment in euthymic bipolar patients, but this issue has been studied mostly in bipolar I disorder, data on bipolar II (BD-II) are scant and discrepant. The two aims of this study were to ascertain whether strictly defined euthymic BD-II patients would present neurocognitive disturbances and to evaluate their impact on functional outcome. Method: Forty-three BD-II patients and 42 demographically and educationally matched healthy subjects …

Neuropsychological group study methodology is considered one of the primary methods to further understanding of the organisation of frontal ‘executive’ functions. Typically, patients with frontal lesions caused by stroke or tumours have been grouped together to obtain sufficient power. However, it has been debated whether it is methodologically appropriate to group together patients with neurological lesions of different aetiologies. Despite this debate, very few studies have directly compared the performance of patients with different neurological aetiologies on neuropsychological measures. The few that did included patients with both anterior and posterior lesions. We present the first co…
2021
BackgroundExecutive functions underlie self-regulation and are thus important for physical activity and adaptation to new situations. The aim was to investigate, if yearlong physical and cognitive training (PTCT) had greater effects on physical activity among older adults than physical training (PT) alone, and if executive functions predicted physical activity at baseline, after six (6m) and twelve months (12m) of the interventions, one-year post-intervention follow-up and an extended follow-up during COVID-19 lockdown.MethodsData from a single-blinded, parallel-group randomized controlled trial (PASSWORD-study, ISRCTN52388040) were utilized. Participants were 70–85 years old community-dwel…
Low Serum Choline Concentrations Are Associated with Worse Cognitive Performance in Subjects with Metabolic Syndrome
2020
OBJECTIVES: Choline is an essential nutrient critical for components of the cell membrane, such as choline-containing phospholipids (phosphatidylcholine and sphingomyelin), and in synthesis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Choline has been shown to exert neuroprotective effects, but the association between serum choline and cognitive performance has been scarcely investigated. Our aims are: 1) To study the association between serum total choline, phosphatidylcholine and sphingomyelin with cognitive performance in subjects with metabolic syndrome; and 2) to analyze genetic variants and dietary intake most associated with cholines in this population. METHODS: We analyzed 426 subjects (a…
