Geometric Aspects of Thermodynamics

This chapter deals with mathematical aspects of thermodynamics most of which will be seen to be primarily of geometrical nature. Starting with a short excursion to differentiable manifolds we summarize the properties of functions, of vector fields and of one-forms on thermodynamic manifolds. This summary centers on exterior forms over Euclidean spaces and the corresponding differential calculus. In particular, one-forms provide useful tools for the analysis of thermodynamics. A theorem by Caratheodory is developed which is closely related to the second law of thermodynamics. Supervisor leadership style, employee regulatory focus, and leadership performance: A perspectivism approach

[EN] Drawing on regulatory focus theory, this research proposes that transformational leadership performance depends on followers' circumstances. The analysis of 125 people from two Spanish service firms reveals that, apart from transformational leadership, the presence of academic education, intrinsic job satisfaction and high customer contact, and the absence of family responsibilities, are core conditions for the presence of high leadership performance. AbstractDisaster research, conflict research, and peace research have rich and deep histories, yet they do not always fully intersect or learn from each other, even when they investigate if and how disasters lead to conflict or peace. Utopianism in the Age of Capitalocene

This article explores the social and political imagination of ‘the Anthropocene’ and the utopian counter images that can be derived from it. From the utopian studies perspective, I argue that the Anthropocene cannot provide sufficient societal alternatives for the current ecological predicament. This is due to the fact that the concept of Anthropocene relies too heavily on the image of abstract humanity to be able to offer real societal alternatives. It cannot name the social system we live in and, therefore, it cannot fundamentally challenge existing social arrangements. Leadership and spirituality in business and public administration: a cross-cultural empirical study comparing the USA and France

National audience; In this discussion we build on previous work on the role of ethics in shaping the behaviour of leaders in business and public administration to investigate the relationship between leadership spirituality, the environment springing from such leadership, and the resulting followers’ attributions of leader effectiveness in the USA and France. Survey data collected from the USA and France were used to test a composite construct of spiritual leadership including (a) accountability, (b) rationality, and (c) honesty. In adult education there is always a problem of prefabricated and in many respect fixed opinions and views of the world. In this sense, I will argue, that the starting point of radical education should be in the destruction of these walls of belief that people build around themselves in order to feel safe. In this connection I will talk about ‘gentle shattering of identities’ as a problem and a method of radical education. Uno de los argumentos más comunes a la hora de justificar el exiguo impacto d elos servicios sociales es el escaso peso que éstos representan en el conjunto del gasto social. En el articulo se muestra que esta justificación puede no ser del todo cierta.
