Flexible minerals: self-assembled calcite spicules with extreme bending strength.

Flexi-Fibers Glass or metal fibers can show incredible flexibility. Natalio et al. (p. 1298 ; see the Perspective by Sethmann ) used the protein silicatein-α, which is responsible for the biomineralization of silicates in sponges, to guide the formation of spicules made of calcite. These synthetic spicules could be bent to a high degree because of their inherent elasticity, whilst retaining the ability to guide light.

MS4A12 is a colon-selective store-operated calcium channel promoting malignant cell processes.

AbstractUsing a data mining approach for the discovery of new targets for antibody therapy of colon cancer, we identified MS4A12, a sequence homologue of CD20. We show that MS4A12 is a cell surface protein. Expression analysis and immunohistochemistry revealed MS4A12 to be a colonic epithelial cell lineage gene confined to the apical membrane of colonocytes with strict transcriptional repression in all other normal tissue types. Expression is maintained upon malignant transformation in 63% of colon cancers. Ca2+ flux analyses disclosed that MS4A12 is a novel component of store-operated Ca2+ entry in intestinal cells. Morbus Alzheimer neuropathology is characterized by an impaired energy homeostasis of brain tissue. We present an approach towards a potential therapy of Alzheimer disease based on the high-energy polymer inorganic polyphosphate (polyP), which physiologically occurs both in the extracellular and in the intracellular space. Rat pheochromocytoma (PC) 12 cells, as well as rat primary cortical neurons were exposed to the Alzheimer peptide Aβ25-35. Crystallized nano-sized alpha-tricalcium phosphate from amorphous calcium phosphate: microstructure, cementation and cell response

New insight on the conversion of amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) to nano-sized alpha tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) provides a faster pathway to calcium phosphate bone cements. In this work, synthesized ACP powders were treated with either water or ethanol, dried, crystallized between 700 and 800 °C, and then cooled at different cooling rates. Particle size was measured in a scanning electron microscope, but crystallite size calculated by Rietveld analysis. Phase composition and bonding in the crystallized powder was assessed by x-ray diffraction and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Exponential instability in the fractional Calder\'on problem

In this note we prove the exponential instability of the fractional Calder\'on problem and thus prove the optimality of the logarithmic stability estimate from \cite{RS17}. In order to infer this result, we follow the strategy introduced by Mandache in \cite{M01} for the standard Calder\'on problem. Here we exploit a close relation between the fractional Calder\'on problem and the classical Poisson operator. Moreover, using the construction of a suitable orthonormal basis, we also prove (almost) optimality of the Runge approximation result for the fractional Laplacian, which was derived in \cite{RS17}. The in vitro metabolic activation of dibenz[a,h]anthracene, catalyzed by by rat liver microsomes and examined by 32P-postlabelling.

DNA has been incubated in vitro with dibenz[a,h]anthracene (DB[a,H]A) and the related 5,6-diol and 3,4-diol in the presence of 3-methylcholanthrene- or Aroclor 1254-induced rat liver microsomes. After incubation, the DNA was extracted and examined for the presence of aromatic adducts using the nuclease P1 modification of the 32P-postlabelling technique. The maps of PEI-cellulose plates and autoradiography showed that 92% of the radioactivity contained in DB[a,h]A-DNA adduct spots is derived from the related 3,4-diol and that about 50% of the adducts may be formed following the conversion of this diol to the bay-region anti- and syn-3,4-diol 1,2-oxides.

In previous work we established the rat liver oval cell line OC/CDE 22 in order to study in vitro mechanisms of liver cell transformation. We have now exposed OC/CDE 22 cells to each of the four optically active fjord region dihydrodiol epoxides of benzo[c]phenanthrene to investigate their capacity for malignant transformation of liver cells. All four configurational isomers, which are among the most potent carcinogenic metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons tested in murine tumour models, malignantly transform OC/CDE 22 cells at a 2 microM dose level, resulting in a similar colony-forming efficiency in soft agar. Morphological transformation and DNA adduct formation by dibenz[a,h]anthracene and its metabolites in C3H10T1/2CL8 cells.

The major routes of metabolic activation of dibenz[a,h]-anthracene (DBA) have been studied in transformable C3H10T1/2CL8 (C3H10T1/2) mouse embryo fibroblasts in culture. The morphological transforming activities of three potential intermediates formed by metabolism of DBA by C3H10T1/2 cells, trans-3,4-dihydroxy-3,4-dihydro-DBA-(DBA-3,4-diol), trans-dihydroxy-3,4-dihydro-DBA-anti-1,2-oxide (DBA-3,4-diol-1,2-oxide) and DBA-5,6-oxide were determined.
