TGF-β Dependent T-Cell Regulation in Colitis and Colon Cancer

2008

Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) is a potent growth inhibitor endowed with tumor-suppressing activity. Unfortunately, cancers are often resistant to such growth inhibition. This evasion frequently results from a genetic loss of functional TGF-β signaling components. On the other hand, cancer cells often produce high amounts TGF-β1 by themselves and sometimes respond to it with invasion and metastasis. Much effort is being done to develop therapeutic approaches to modulate TGF-β signaling in cancer cells either to inhibit the TGF-β-induced invasive phenotype or to reestablish its growth-inhibitory activities. However, TGF-β is a pleiotropic cytokine with important functions not only in c…

Prospective Comparison of Loop Excision under Colposcopic Guidance versus Vitom Guidance.

2012

Background: Aim of the study was to compare the quality of loop excision using a colposcope with results using the VITOM system. Results compared included cervical volume removed, intra- and postoperative complications, and positive resection margins. Methods: A total of 200 patients with histologically confirmed high-grade cervical premalignant lesions, persistent atypical cytological results and/or suspicious colposcopic findings, and cytological and histological discrepancies were included in the study. In transformation zone type 1 (T1) only a superficial cone biopsy was done, in zones type 2 and 3 (T2 and T3) a superficial outside cone biopsy or a deeper inside cone biopsy were done re…

Burrows-Wheeler transform and palindromic richness

2009

AbstractThe investigation of the extremal case of the Burrows–Wheeler transform leads to study the words w over an ordered alphabet A={a1,a2,…,ak}, with a1<a2<⋯<ak, such that bwt(w) is of the form aknkak−1nk−1⋯a2n2a1n1, for some non-negative integers n1,n2,…,nk. A characterization of these words in the case |A|=2 has been given in [Sabrina Mantaci, Antonio Restivo, Marinella Sciortino, Burrows-Wheeler transform and Sturmian words, Information Processing Letters 86 (2003) 241–246], where it is proved that they correspond to the powers of conjugates of standard words. The case |A|=3 has been settled in [Jamie Simpson, Simon J. Puglisi, Words with simple Burrows-Wheeler transforms, Electronic …

Exceptional Configurations of Quantum Walks with Grover’s Coin

2016

We study search by quantum walk on a two-dimensional grid using the algorithm of Ambainis, Kempe and Rivosh [AKR05]. We show what the most natural coin transformation -- Grover's diffusion transformation -- has a wide class of exceptional configurations of marked locations, for which the probability of finding any of the marked locations does not grow over time. This extends the class of known exceptional configurations; until now the only known such configuration was the "diagonal construction" by [AR08].

Balanced Words Having Simple Burrows-Wheeler Transform

2009

The investigation of the "clustering effect" of the Burrows-Wheeler transform (BWT) leads to study the words having simple BWT , i.e. words w over an ordered alphabet $A=\{a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_k\}$, with $a_1 < a_2 < \ldots <a_k$, such that $bwt(w)$ is of the form $a_k^{n_k} a_{k-1}^{n_{k-1}} \cdots a_1^{n_1}$, for some non-negative integers $n_1, n_2, \ldots, n_k$. We remark that, in the case of binary alphabets, there is an equivalence between words having simple BWT, the family of (circular) balanced words and the conjugates of standard words. In the case of alphabets of size greater than two, there is no more equivalence between these notions. As a main result of this paper we prove that, u…

Cotype 2 estimates for spaces of polynomials on sequence spaces

2002

We give asymptotically correct estimations for the cotype 2 constant C2(P(mXn)) ofthe spaceP(mXn) of allm-homogenous polynomials onXn, the span of the firstn sequencesek=(\gdkj)j in a Banach sequence spaceX. Applications to Minkowski, Orlicz and Lorentz sequence spaces are given.

Action-Angle Variables

2001

In the following we will assume that the Hamiltonian does not depend explicitly on time; ∂H/∂t = 0. Then we know that the characteristic function W(q i , P i ) is the generator of a canonical transformation to new constant momenta P i , (all Q i , are ignorable), and the new Hamiltonian depends only on the P i ,: H = K = K(P i ). Besides, the following canonical equations are valid: $$ \dot Q_i = \frac{{\partial K}} {{\partial P_i }} = v_i = const. $$ (1) $$ \dot P_i = \frac{{\partial K}} {{\partial Q_i }} = 0. $$ (2)

Evaluating the Reform of Healthcare System in Sicily: variations of efficiency and appropriateness between 2008 and 2010

2022

Background. Sicilian government has developed a very ambitious Reform through the Regional Law n. 5 (14th April 2009). Hospitals were requested to ensure the quality of care through monitoring of appropriateness and quality of service. The aim of this study was to assess variations of efficiency and organizational appropriateness of healthcare delivery before and after this Reform and to show patterns associated to different types of healthcare delivery organizations. Methods. This study was based on repeated cross-sectional data for 118 (out of 129) short-term, acute-care, non teaching-and-research Sicilian hospitals, in 2008 and 2010. Congestion and slacks analysis was…

Transformative Teaching and Learning Through Engaged Practice : Lecturers’ and Students’ Experiences in a University and Underserved Community Partne…

2018

peer-reviewed The Community Wellness, Empowerment, Leadership and Lifeskills (CWell) program is a two-year community-driven program developed in partnership between an underserved-community in Limerick City, and staff at the University of Limerick (UL), Ireland. This paper explores the transformative teaching and learning experiences that arose throughout the duration of the progam for the lecturers and students. Data were collected through interviews and focus groups with lecturers and students involved in the program. Students supported the notion of “learning differently” and focused around prior learning and attitude to learning, learning about learning and impact of learning. Lecturers…
