Relevance of new recommendations on routine antenatal prevention of rhesus immunization: an appraisal based on a retrospective analysis of all cases …

2008

Abstract Objective To assess the potential impact of new guidelines recommending routine antenatal prophylaxis at 28 weeks of pregnancy on incidence, consequences and cost of rhesus immunization. Study design All rhesus immunizations of 224,500 ongoing pregnancies in two neighbouring administrative areas in France between 2000 and 2006 were enrolled in this retrospective study. To determine the aetiology of immunization and to specify when sensitization occurred, we searched sensitizing events between the last negative and the first positive red-cell antibody test results. Perinatal consequences and costing were also analyzed. Results From 138 rhesus negative women bearing anti-D antibodies…

Neonatal outcome following long-distance air travel for fetoscopic laser coagulation treatment of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome

2011

Abstract Objective To investigate the impact of undertaking long-distance air travel to a specialized medical center while pregnant in order to undergo fetoscopic laser coagulation (FLC) for twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS). Methods A retrospective cohort study was conducted of women with TTTS who travelled by air (n = 16) or land (n = 61) to the Centre of Perinatal Diagnosis and Microinvasive Fetal Surgery, Mainz, Germany, between January 1, 2006, and December 31, 2010. All women underwent FLC on arrival at the study center. Neonatal outcome, postoperative neonatal survival rates, and rates of adverse effects were recorded. Results The postoperative survival rate for a single twin …

Obstetric significance of anti-Jr(a) antibody.

2001

Abstract The first case in the English-language medical literature of anti-Jr a antibody during pregnancy in a Spanish woman is described. The few reported cases to date about this issue are reviewed, with advice as to an obstetric guideline to follow for pregnant women with this antibody. (Am J Obstet Gynecol 2001;184:75-6.)

Depletion of Alloreactive Donor T Lymphocytes by CD95-Mediated Activation-Induced Cell Death Retains Antileukemic, Antiviral, and Immunoregulatory T …

2007

In allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHSCT) graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and graft-versus-leukemia (GVL) effect are closely but not invariably linked. Thus, harnessing donor lymphocyte mediated GVL immunity and separating it from GVHD is of particular interest. Based on results obtained in murine models we have explored the CD95-mediated activation-induced cell death (AICD) strategy to selectively deplete alloreactivity in human donor T lymphocytes in vitro. Following stimulation of CD3(+) T cells isolated from HLA-A* 0201-positive donors with HLA or minor histocompatibility antigen mismatched hematopoietic or nonhematopoietic cells in the presence of agonistic anti-CD…

Effects of pathogen reduction systems on platelet microRNAs, mRNAs, activation, and function

2014

Pathogen reduction (PR) systems for platelets, based on chemically induced cross-linking and inactivation of nucleic acids, potentially prevent transfusion transmission of infectious agents, but can increase clinically significant bleeding in some clinical studies. Here, we documented the effects of PR systems on microRNA and mRNA levels of platelets stored in the blood bank, and assessed their impact on platelet activation and function. Unlike platelets subjected to gamma irradiation or stored in additive solution, platelets treated with Intercept (amotosalen + ultraviolet-A [UVA] light) exhibited significantly reduced levels of 6 of the 11 microRNAs, and 2 of the 3 anti-apoptotic mRNAs (B…

Complement split products and proinflammatory cytokines in intraoperatively salvaged unwashed blood during hip replacement: comparison between hepari…

2008

Background and Objectives  The aim of the present study was to investigate the quality of shed blood collected in a new intraoperative autotransfusion system (Sangvia®, AstraTech, Sweden) and to study whether heparin-coated surfaces in the device reduce the production of inflammatory mediators. Material and Methods  The study was randomized and prospective. Twelve total hip arthroplasty patients whose blood was collected with a device having a heparin-coated surface and 12 patients whose blood was collected with a device having a non-heparin-coated surface were included. Venous blood was drawn from the patients preoperatively. Intraoperatively 200 ml salvaged blood was collected and samples…

An overview of doping in sports

2019

The history of doping field can be outlined in three major stages: (1) early stage in which drug abuse took place during sports performance and competition and gas chromatography was used for its detection; (2) approximately in the 1970s when androgenic anabolic steroids were introduced; (3) In the recent era when the fields of biochemistry, physiology, toxicology, genomics, genetics, immunology, and molecular biology were integrated and applied routinely. Advanced omics technology and gene doping age may be applied in near future. This review will discuss commonly abused materials, both their adverse and harmful effects, and the alleged benefits in conjunction with the current standards in…

The platelets’ perspective to pathogen reduction technologies

2017

A wide variety of clinical conditions, associated with low circulating platelet counts, require platelet transfusion in order to normalize hemostatic function. Although single-donor apheresis platelets bear the lowest risk of transfusion-transmitted infections, pathogen reduction technologies (PRT) are being implemented worldwide to reduce this risk further through inactivation of known, emergent and as yet to be discovered nucleic acid-based pathogens. Human blood platelets are now known to harbor a diverse transcriptome, important to their function and comprised of >5000 protein-coding messenger RNAs and different classes of non-coding RNAs, including microRNAs. Our appreciation of the nu…

Differences in non-MHC restricted cytotoxic activities of human peripheral blood lymphocytes after transfusion with allogeneic leukocytes or platelet…

1990

Abstract MHC-unrestricted cytotoxic activity of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) from 4–6 healthy donors was investigated before and after transfusion with allogeneic leukocytes or platelets. Natural killer and lectin-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (LDCC) of PBL was tested against K562 and Raji target cells in a 4-h and 16-h 51 Cr-release assay, respectively. After allotransfusion with leukocytes, we found increased cytotoxic activity of each donor's PBL against all the three targets on day 3 or 7. The highest non-specific cytotoxic activity was detected against the relatively NK resistant Raji target cells. The increase of cytotoxic activity was lowest against the LDCC target (PHA-treat…
