Middle Triassic carbonate platforms in eastern Iberia: Evolution of their fauna and palaeogeographic significance in the western Tethys

Abstract This article reports the first integrated study of the Middle Triassic of Iberia, based on the stratigraphy, sedimentology, and fossil fauna of Muschelkalk facies of the Iberian Ranges and the Catalan Coastal Ranges in Spain. On the basis of this study, new palaeogeographic reconstructions of the westernmost Tethys are proposed, and the evolution of the different palaeogeographic domains of Iberia (e.g., Iberian, Mediterranean, and Levantine–Balearic) are described. A foraminiferal assemblage as a bioevent marker of the main Ladinian transgressive stage in the Betic Cordillera, southern Spain

Abstract The Betic Cordillera comprises the mountain range in the southern Iberian Peninsula that extends from Cadiz to Alicante, which displays typical features of alpine cordilleras. The Betic Cordillera includes two large geological tectonic domains, namely an External Zone, and an Internal Zone. The External Zone is essentially composed of epicontinental Triassic rocks that consist of the Buntsandstein, Muschelkalk and Keuper facies. The Buntsandstein facies rarely occur in outcrops, whereas the Keuper stratigraphic successions are truncated. Evolution of ammonoid morphospace during the Early Jurassic radiation

The morphologic radiation of Early Jurassic ammonites following the near extinction at the end of the Triassic is analyzed from 436 species of 156 genera that form a representative sample of morphs occurring worldwide in the first three stages of the Jurassic (Hettangian, Sinemurian, Pliensbachian: 36 subzones, 24 m.y.). Morphologic diversity is analyzed independently of taxonomy by processing 18 shape parameters using multivariate analysis and clustering techniques. The Middle-Upper Jurassic boundary in western Europe is characterized by extensive condensed sections containing authigenic minerals together with abundant and varied fossils, both reworked and not reworked. We have analyzed ammonite shells and chronologically ordered taphonomic events in a taphonomic sequence extending from the time the dead organism settled on the seafloor to the time it became permanently incorporated in the sediment. Abstract Sequence stratigraphy throws a new and seminal light on the fossil record and helps in determining the respective role played by external control (community replacement) and internal control (paleoecological succession) in the temporal “train” of marine benthic paleocommunities. Abstract Sequence stratigraphic studies of the Triassic through Paleogene carbonate successions of platform, slope and basin in western Sicily (Palermo and Termini Imerese Mountains) have identified a sedimentary cyclicity mostly caused by relative oscillations of sea level. The stratigraphic successions of the Imerese and Panormide palaeogeographic domains of the southern Tethyan continental margin were studied with physical-stratigraphy and facies analysis to reconstruct the sedimentary evolution of this platform-to-basin system. AbstractDetailed field sedimentological and facies analyses have been performed in the Terravecchia Formation cropping out in NW Sicily, in order to differentiate and describe, for the first time, wave- and river-dominated shallow-marine (deltaic) siliciclastic successions.
