Which tool to distinguish transient alumina from alpha alumina in thermally grown alumina scales?

2005

International audience; Alumina scales constitute excellent protective barriers when they form on alumina-forming steels. If they keep tightly adherent to the underlying substrate, they isolate it from the surrounding aggressive atmosphere at high temperature. The protectiveness of the alumina scale is highly dependant upon its growth mechanism. The nucleation and transformation of transient alumina (mainly g-Al2O3 and y-Al2O3) is known to play an important role on alumina scale formation. It is therefore fundamental to characterise these transient alumina especially during the early stages of the oxidation process. The morphology of the transient alumina was observed by scanning electron m…

Hippocampal reversible lesions in a case of transient global amnesia

2018

We report the case of 55-year-old man that after an emotional stress showed retrograde and anterograde amnesia with impairment of orientation in space and time but undisturbed consciousness. A neurological examination excluded other neurological signs or symptoms. The amnesic syndrome resolved spontaneously within 24 hours and the hypothesis of transient global amnesia was placed. Brain CT scan and conventional MRI sequences did not show any relevant pathological findings but diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) showed two millimetric bright spot of restricted diffusion in the right hippocampus; in a brain MRI follow-up those findings were no more appreciable. The diagnosis of transient global …

Dynamic Diglyme-Mediated Self-Assembly of Gold Nanoclusters

2015

We report the assembly of gold nanoclusters by the nonthiolate ligand diglyme into discrete and dynamic assemblies. To understand this surprising phenomenon, the assembly of Au20(SC2H4Ph)15-diglyme into Au20(SC2H4Ph)15-diglyme-Au20(SC2H4Ph)15 is explored in detail. The assembly is examined by high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy, size exclusion chromatography, mass spectrometry, IR spectroscopy, and calorimetry. We establish a dissociation constant for dimer to monomer conversion of 20.4 μM. Theoretical models validated by transient absorption spectroscopy predict a low-spin monomer and a high-spin dimer, with assembly enabled through weak diglyme oxygen-g…

TRANSIENT AND FREE-VIBRATION ANALYSIS OF LAMINATED SHELLS THROUGH THE DISCONTINUOUS GALERKIN METHOD

2022

This paper presents a novel formulation for linear transient and free-vibration analysis of laminated shell structures based on Interior Penalty discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods and variable-order through-the-thickness kinematics, whose combined use allows solving the shell problem with high-order accuracy throughout both the shell thickness and the shell modelling domain. The shell geometry is described via a generic system of curvilinear coordinates using either an analytical or a NURBS-based parametrization of the shell mid surface; the formulation also allows for the presence of cut-outs, which are implicitly represented by means of a level set function. After deriving the governing …

Numerical approximation of mixed models for digital integrated circuits

1991

To analyse an electrical network many CAD (Computer Aided Design) circuit simulators are available today. The most well-known is probably SPICE -Nagel [1975]. Although this type of simulator is able to precisely compute the transient performances (as delay time), the usage of complete models of devices implies an extremely high time consumption. So, the circuit simulators are unappropriate for the initial stage of VLSI design where a high speed timing analyser (“timing simulator”) is required. To this goal, alternative approaches using either simpler device models or simpler numerical algorithms or easily computable formulae for delay time approximation, have been developed in the past deca…

Wavelet-based efficient simulation of electromagnetic transients in a lightning protection system

2003

In this paper, a wavelet-based efficient simulation of electromagnetic transients in a lightning protection systems (LPS) is presented. The analysis of electromagnetic transients is carried out by employing the thin-wire electric field integral equation in frequency domain. In order to easily handle the boundary conditions of the integral equation, semiorthogonal compactly supported spline wavelets, constructed for the bounded interval [0,1], have been taken into account in expanding the unknown longitudinal currents. The integral equation is then solved by means of the Galerkin method. As a preprocessing stage, a discrete wavelet transform is used in order to efficiently compress the Fouri…

Validation of a New Method for the Diagnosis of Rotor bar Failures via Wavelet Transformation in Industrial Induction Machines

2006

[EN] In this paper, the authors propose a method for the diagnosis of rotor bar failures in induction machines, based on the analysis of the stator current during the startup using the discrete wavelet transform (DWT). Unlike other approaches, the study of the high-order wavelet signals resulting from the decomposition is the core of the proposed method. After an introduction of the physical and mathematical bases of the method, a description of the proposed approach is given; for this purpose, a numerical model of induction machine is used in such a way that the effects of a bar breakage can clearly be shown, avoiding the influence of other phenomena not related with the fault. Afterward, …

The Use of the Wavelet Approximation Signal as a Tool for the Diagnosis of Rotor Bar Failures

2005

[EN] The aim of this paper is to present a new approach for rotor bar failure diagnosis in induction machines. The method focuses on the study of an approximation signal resulting from the wavelet decomposition of the startup stator current. The presence of the left sideband harmonic is used as evidence of the rotor failure in most diagnosis methods based on the analysis of the stator current. Thus, a detailed description of the evolution of the left sideband harmonic during the startup transient is given in this paper; for this purpose, a method for calculating the evolution of the left sideband during the startup is developed, and its results are physically explained. This paper also show…

A Mesh-free Particle Method for Transient Full-wave Simulation

2007

A mesh-free particle method is presented for electromagnetic (EM) transient simulation. The basic idea is to obtain numerical solutions for the partial differential equations describing the EM problem in time domain, by using a set of particles, considered as spatial interpolation points of the field variables, arbitrarily placed in the problem domain and by avoiding the use of a regular mesh. Irregular problems geometry with diffused non-homogeneous media can be modeled only with an initial set of arbitrarily distributed particles. The time dependence is accounted for with an explicit finite difference scheme. Moreover the particle discretization can be improved during the process time ste…

Modelling of a prosumer’s substation in a district heating network: validation and dynamic analysis

Thermal grids will play a key role in the development of local energy communities and the achievement of 100% renewable societies. However, challenges are related to the capability of dealing with the increasing number of producers which could supply heat to thermal grids. Indeed, as in the case of the electricity grid, heat could be available for some hours in a day from RES plants installed at user level and distributed in the network (also referred to as “prosumers”). To achieve more reliable results when performing energy analyses of these innovative applications, there is a need to rely on accurate models of each component. For instance, substations are of paramount importance in the i…
