Search for transient sources with the ANTARES and KM3NeT neutrino telescopes in the multi-messenger astronomy era

2020

Run-Time Reconfiguration for Emulating Transient Faults in VLSI Systems

2006

Advances in circuitry integration increase the probability of occurrence of transient faults in VLSI systems. A confident use of these systems requires the study of their behaviour in the presence of such faults. This study can be conducted using model-based fault injection techniques. In that context, field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) offer a great promise by enabling those techniques to execute models faster. This paper focuses on how run-time reconfiguration techniques can be used for emulating the occurrence of transient faults in VLSI models. Although the use of FPGAs for that purpose has been restricted so far to the well-known bit-flip fault model, recent studies in fault repres…

One-sensor electronic olfactometer for rapid sorting of fresh fruit juices

2001

Abstract A low-cost electronic olfactometer was developed, based on virtual sensors array (an array of signals from a single metal oxide sensor) and on our proprietary semi-automated sampling system. This concept enables us to drastically improve the sensitivity and selectivity of the entire olfactometer to make it suited to food products analysis. Each step of the prototype was checked separately in earlier work, and finally the system performance was evaluated first on pure chemicals, and then at-line for grape juice during grape-harvesting in Champagne. It is shown that over a 3-week vintage period, the drift of the unique-sensor was quite low (absolute baseline value: avg., 2152; std., …

Astrocytic potassium and calcium channels as integrators of the inflammatory and ischemic CNS microenvironment.

2021

Abstract Astrocytes are key regulators of their surroundings by receiving and integrating stimuli from their local microenvironment, thereby regulating glial and neuronal homeostasis. Cumulating evidence supports a plethora of heterogenic astrocyte subpopulations that differ morphologically and in their expression patterns of receptors, transporters and ion channels, as well as in their functional specialisation. Astrocytic heterogeneity is especially relevant under pathological conditions. In experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), a mouse model of multiple sclerosis (MS), morphologically distinct astrocytic subtypes were identified and could be linked to transcriptome changes dur…

Elastic waves in random-fibre networks

1997

The propagation of the first displacement maximum of a semi-infinite wavetrain in a two-dimensional random-fibre network is analysed. Model calculations and numerical simulations are used for demonstrating that two qualitatively different wavefront velocities appear in the network. A transient wave, which travels fast and whose amplitude decreases exponentially, dominates the short-time behaviour when the bending stiffness of the fibres is small and the driving frequency is high. This mode can be described by a one-dimensional model. The transient-wave mode propagates even if the bending stiffness of the fibres vanishes, in which case the normal sound velocity is zero. The usual, and slower…

Early warning for VHE gamma-ray flares with the ARGO-YBJ detector

2011

Detecting and monitoring emissions from flaring gamma-ray sources in the very-high-energy (VHE, > 100 GeV) band is a very important topic in gamma-ray astronomy. The ARGO-YBJ detector is characterized by a high duty cycle and a wide field of view. Therefore, it is particularly capable of detecting flares from extragalactic objects. Based on fast reconstruction and analysis, real-time monitoring of 33 selected VHE extragalactic sources is implemented. Flares exceeding a specific threshold are reported timely, hence enabling the follow-up observation of these objects using more sensitive detectors, such as Cherenkov telescopes. Experimental characterization of a novel configuration of thermoelectric refrigerator with integrated finned heat pipes

2021

Abstract Thermoelectric refrigerating systems (TER) are environment-friendly technologies. They have several advantages such as low maintenance costs, are less cumbersome and long lifetime. However, these systems have low coefficient of performance and are limited in achieving low temperature levels. This study investigates a new configuration of TE refrigerator employing a novel arrangement of heat sinks with integrated flat and finned heat pipes. A mathematical model is firstly developed to predict transient temperatures and cooling limit time. An experimental characterization is then performed and it includes optimization of energy consumption, cooling time, temperature levels and TE ref…

Non-uniform Sediment Transport Estimation in Non-equilibrium Situations: Case Studies

2014

Abstract Quantitative estimate of sediment transport in alluvial channels is one of the most important task in river engineering. Even today, numerical models of sediment transport processes are confronted with some difficulties, often of conceptual nature. One of these difficulties is the simulation of non-uniform sediment transport in non-equilibrium situations, which requires the characterization of the ability of the alluvial system to immediately overcome the variations of the sediment boundary conditions. In this work a 1-D numerical model, which includes a new expression of the so-called “adaptation coefficient”, has been applied to test its capability to simulate the transient bed p…
