Corner wetting in the two-dimensional Ising model: Monte Carlo results

2003

Square L ? L (L = 24?128) Ising lattices with nearest neighbour ferromagnetic exchange are considered using free boundary conditions at which boundary magnetic fields ? h are applied, i.e., at the two boundary rows ending at the lower left corner a field +h acts, while at the two boundary rows ending at the upper right corner a field ?h acts. For temperatures T less than the critical temperature Tc of the bulk, this boundary condition leads to the formation of two domains with opposite orientations of the magnetization direction, separated by an interface which for T larger than the filling transition temperature Tf (h) runs from the upper left corner to the lower right corner, while for T …

Static freezing transition at a finite temperature in a quasi-one-dimensional deuteron glass.

1996

The dipolar freezing process of a quasi-one-dimensional betaine deuteron glass was studied using linear and nonlinear dielectric spectroscopy. The linear response as measured for frequencies $5\mathrm{mHz}l\ensuremath{\nu}l200\mathrm{MHz}$ was analyzed using the recently invented $\ensuremath{\delta}$ plot, providing evidence for a static freezing transition near 30 K. Measurements of the ergodic to nonergodic transition as well as of the incipient divergence of the nonlinear susceptibility yield independent confirmation of this quasistatic freezing transition temperature. The critical exponent describing the nonlinear behavior is found to be $\ensuremath{\gamma}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\p…

Singlet ground state magnetism: II. magnetic excitons in paramagnetic TbP

1979

The magneticΓ 1 –Γ 4 exciton of the singlet ground state system TbP has been studied by inelastic neutron scattering above the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature. Considerable dispersion and a pronounced splitting was found in the [100] and [110] directions. Both the band width and the splitting increased rapidly as the transition temperature was approached in accordance with the predictions of the RPA-theory. The dispersion is analysed in terms of a phenomenological model using interactions up to the fourth nearest neighbour.

Size effect in phase transition kinetics

1988

The growth of a spontaneous lattice average magnetization in a magnetic system which is suddenly brought below the transition temperature is a stochastic process in which the very small fluctuations of the initial magnetization are amplified to a macroscopic size. The initial magnetization fluctuates in time around the zero average value because of the finite size of the system. As a consequence of the fluctuation-amplification phenomenon the nonlinear relaxation of the finite system is qualitatively different from that of the infinite one. The present paper studies this feature of phase-transition kinetics in the framework of a very simple model: the dynamical generalization of the spheric…

Ising Spin-Glass on a Lattice with Small Loops

1991

We consider the Ising spin-glass on a special lattice containing small loops with finite coordination number c. We derive the equation for the effective field distribution. With zero external field, we calculate the spin-glass transition temperature and obtain the lower critical dimension of the system. We investigate the system near and below the spin-glass transition and find that the replica symmetric solution is unstable in the low-temperature phase. Our results indicate that the replica symmetry breaking (RSB) effects are stronger than that of the Bethe lattice and furthermore, RSB is enhanced as the dimension (c/2) is decreased. Comparison with recent results of the 1/d expansion is a…

Monte Carlo study of the order-parameter distribution in the four-dimensional Ising spin glass

1990

We investigate the order-parameter distribution P(q) of the Ising spin glass with nearest-neighbor interactions in four dimensions using Monte Carlo simulations on lattices of linear dimension up to L=6. We find that, below the transition temperature ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$, the weight at small q seems to saturate to a nonzero value as the size increases, similar to the infinite-range Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model. We discuss our results in the light of recent theoretical predictions for the nature of the spin-glass phase.

Finite-size scaling at the dynamical transition of the mean-field 10-state Potts glass

2001

We use Monte Carlo simulations to study the static and dynamical properties of a Potts glass with infinite range Gaussian distributed exchange interactions for a broad range of temperature and system size up to N=2560 spins. The results are compatible with a critical divergence of the relaxation time tau at the theoretically predicted dynamical transition temperature T_D, tau \propto (T-T_D)^{-\Delta} with Delta \approx 2. For finite N a further power law at T=T_D is found, tau(T=T_D) \propto N^{z^\star} with z^\star \approx 1.5 and for T>T_D dynamical finite-size scaling seems to hold. The order parameter distribution P(q) is qualitatively compatible with the scenario of a first order glas…

Thin Ising films with competing walls: A Monte Carlo study.

1995

Ising magnets with a nearest neighbor ferromagnetic exchange interaction J on a simple cubic lattice are studied in a thin film geometry using extensive Monte Carlo simulations. The system has two large L\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}L parallel free surfaces, a distance D apart from each other, at which competing surface fields act, i.e., ${\mathit{H}}_{\mathit{D}}$=-${\mathit{H}}_{1}$. In this geometry, the phase transition occurring in the bulk at a temperature ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}\mathit{b}}$ is suppressed, and instead one observes the gradual formation of an interface between coexisting phases stabilized by the surface fields. While this interface is located in the center of th…

Evidence for Multiband Superconductivity in the Heavy Fermion CompoundUNi2Al3

2004

Epitaxial thin films of the heavy fermion superconductor UNi2Al3 with Tc(max)=0.98 K were investigated. The transition temperature Tc depends on the current direction which can be related to superconducting gaps opening at different temperatures. Also the influence of the magnetic ordering at TN approximately 5 K on R(T) is strongly anisotropic, indicating different coupling between the magnetic moments and itinerant charge carriers on the multisheeted Fermi surface. The upper critical field Hc2(T) suggests an unconventional spin-singlet superconducting state.

The Storage of Dried Apricots: The Effect of Packaging and Temperature on the Changes of Texture and Moisture

2012

During storage, the packaging material was crucial in the product's moisture variation. The aim of this work was to study the changes of both the moisture content and the texture of dried apricots packaged in two types of containers, namely glass and polypropylene trays, which were thermosealed with two different films and stored at a constant temperature (5, 15, 25 and 35C). The moisture content and texture of the product were analyzed periodically over a period of 12 months. In addition, a differential scanning calorimetry of the product was carried out for a better understanding of the relationship between these parameters. In samples packaged in films, the maximum force value increased …
