Old concepts, new ideas: approaches to translation shifts

This paper traces the development of the translation shift concept from its origins in the linguistics-oriented era of translation studies to its current revival in computer-based approaches: after a presentation of the traditional approaches by John C. Catford, Jean-Paul Vinay and Jean Darbelnet, Eugene A. Nida, and Kitty van Leuven-Zwart, several recent studies that have integrated the concept of translation shifts are introduced and discussed. Functionally-defined recurrent multi-word units in English-to-Polish translation

This study uses both parallel and comparable reference corpora in the English-Polish language pair to explore how translators deal with recurrent multi-word items performing specific discoursal functions.We also consider whether the observed tendencies overlap with those found in native texts,and the extent to which the discoursal functions realised by themulti-word items under scrutiny are “preserved” in translation. Abstract. After the postcolonial critique, dealing with the power of speaking and self-reflexivity belong to the great challenges of academic work. In this article, we derive the necessity to accept these challenges from our own projects and discuss their practical consequences as well as the difficulties of integrating them in development studies of human and physical geography. Abstract: Theoretical approaches towards a classification of texts and empirical analyses of individual text types have been pursued more or less independently of each other.
