Stance bundles in English-to-Polish Translation: a Corpus-Informed Study

In this paper, we make an attempt to improve the textual fit of English-to-Polish translation of a peculiar type of multi-word units known in corpus linguistic literature as lexical bundles (Biber et al. 1999). Inspired by a study conducted by Grabar and Lefer (2015), we used the English-Polish parallel corpus Paralela (Pęzik 2016) and the National Corpus of Polish (NKJP) to extract and explore the use — in terms of frequency distributions — of the Polish equivalents of selected English lexical bundles expressing attitudinal and epistemic stance. A picture-word matching task was conducted in order to compare consumer's opinion on seven common rice-cooking processes (rinsing, soaking, adding other kinds of rice, cereals, and beans, brown rice germination, rapid-boiling, pressure-cooking, and steaming) in Korea, Japan, Thailand, and France. Mašīntulkošanas ietekme tulkošanas jomā ir krietni pieaugusi, taču literāru tekstu tulkošanā tā tiek izmantota reti to sarežģītības dēļ. Šī maģistra darba mērķis ir salīdzināt literāru tekstu mašīntulkojumus ar cilvēka tulkojumiem un analizēt, kāda varētu būt tās iespējamā loma šajā tulkošanas apakšnozarē. Šī darba praktiskajā daļā romānu fragmentu mašīntulkojumi tika salīdzināti ar cilvēku tulkotiem tekstiem divos valodu pāros. Tekstu kvalitāte tika novērtēta, izmantojot manuālu lingvistisko, kā arī automātisko metodi. Tämän proseminaarityön tarkoituksena oli tutkia minkälaisia käännösratkaisuja on hyödynnetty suomennettaessa henkilönimiä Terry Pratchettin kirjassa Lords and Ladies (suomeksi Herraskaista väkeä). Tarkoitus oli selvittää, onko käännösratkaisut valikoitu jonkin tietyn säännönmukaisuuden perusteella. Aineistona tässä tutkimuksessa oli asianomainen romaani, sekä alkuperäiskielisenä versiona että suomenkielisenä käännöksenä. Aineistosta kerättiin henkilönimet ja alkuperäisiä ja käännöksiä verrattiin keskenään. Lisäksi käännökset luokiteltiin käännösratkaisun mukaan seitsemään ryhmään. This article focuses on the publication of Hungarian fiction in translation, with a special consideration of English as a TL. I argue that the mediation of Hungarian literature, a supply-driven activity, is an interactive social event influenced by factors including power, dominance and economics.
