Preface to Data Mining in Biomedical Informatics and Healthcare
2013
Specialized Translators at work during the Risorgimento: the Biblioteca dell'Economista and the English-Italian translations (1851-1867).
2013
During the Risorgimento, with the establishment of the Italian state and its liberal institutions, Political Economy became a subject of particular interest in many cultural and political environments all over the country. Considered the best discipline to cope with the new political situation, its study was promoted by a network of social institutions and individuals whose purpose of spreading an interest in economics led to the publication of a large number of informative texts such as books and book series, handbooks, encyclopaedias and specialized dictionaries. Between 1850 and 1860 Francesco Ferrara, the Sicilian economist, edited the Biblioteca dell’Economista (BE), a collection of ec…
Synthesis and Structure-Activity Relationships of Amino Acid Conjugates of Cholanic Acid as Antagonists of the EphA2 Receptor
2013
The Eph–ephrin system plays a critical role in tumor growth and vascular functions during carcinogenesis. We had previously identified cholanic acid as a competitive and reversible EphA2 antagonist able to disrupt EphA2-ephrinA1 interaction and to inhibit EphA2 activation in prostate cancer cells. Herein, we report the synthesis and biological evaluation of a set of cholanic acid derivatives obtained by conjugation of its carboxyl group with a panel of naturally occurring amino acids with the aim to improve EphA2 receptor inhibition. Structure-activity relationships indicate that conjugation of cholanic acid with linear amino acids of small size leads to effective EphA2 antagonists whereas …
Epigenetic biomarkers: A new perspective in laboratory diagnostics.
2012
Epigenetics comprises the study of chemical modifications in the DNA and histones that regulates the gene expression or cellular phenotype. However, during the last decade this term has evolved after the elucidation of different mechanisms (microRNAs and nuclear organization of the chromosomes) involved in regulating gene expression. Epigenetics and the new designed technologies capable to analyze epigenetic changes (e.g., methylated DNA, miRNAs expression, post-translational modifications on histones among others) have disclosed an appealing scenario that will offer for the biomedical sciences new biomarkers for the study of neurodegenerative diseases, multifactorial complex diseases, rare…
Enzymes involved in the dynamic equilibrium of core histone acetylation ofPhysarum polycephalum
1992
DEAE-Scpharose chromatography of extracts from plasmodia of the myxomyccte PI~.~suru~~t ,~/.~crpl~~ho~~ revealed the presence of multiple histone acetyltransferases and histonc deacctylascs. A cyloplasmic histonc acctyltransferase B, specific for histonc H4, and two nuclear acetyltransferases Al and A2 were identilied; Al acetylates all core hislones with a preference for l-13 and H2A. whereas A2 is specific for H3 and also slightly for H2B. Two hislone deacetylases. HDI and HD2, could be discriminated. They differ with respect to subslralc speciliciiy and pH dependence. For the first time the substrate specificity of histonc deacetylascs was determined using HPLC-purilicd individual core h…
Audiovizuālo mediju lokalizācijas procesa salīdzinājums Latvijā un Igaunijā: ierunāšana un subtitri, nākotnes perspektīvas
2018
2013
This paper puts forward a reflection threaded from my experience as a literary translator, in particular translating contemporary Indian transcultural literature. In translation, linguistic options always involve ethical models. As a translator, I try not to naturalize any difference, I try not to deprive readers of the otherness that comes from reading, that, in linguistic and culturally rich texts, opens up a door to diversity, understood as a value. Translation practice involves, necessarily, an ethical and political consciousness in decision-making. In this paper, I share mine. Este trabajo presenta una reflexión enhebrada desde mi vivencia como traductora literaria, concretamente desde…
National e-resources of Shakespeare translations in Europe: (Dis)assembling the black box
2019
This article discusses the construction, operation and scholarly usefulness of electronic resources of Shakespeare translations. In particular, it offers an overview of several existing European digital resources of Shakespeare translations by singling out trends, challenges and new vistas of research; describing the content, editing policies and functionalities of selected European projects, already in operation or currently assembled; and discussing the aims and major difficulties faced by the researchers, the choice of navigation and search tools, the possibilities of integrating national repositories with other resources and the relation of translation e-resources to adjacent disciplin…
Evaluación de escritos históricos; Historia de la traducción japonesa; Ryōei, Motoki
2013
The first part of this paper revisits the rationale for examining historical views on translation and offers examples of questions that can help researchers—particularly those new to the study of translation history—contextualize and evaluate historical writings on translation. The second part applies some of these questions to a study of the relatively unknown writings of Motoki Ryōei, an eighteenth-century Japanese translator of European scientific works, in an indirect attempt to demonstrate how such questions, although best combined with a more holistic framework, can help researchers delve beyond the obvious historical facts
Biofabrication of 3D tumor models in cancer research
2020
Abstract Tumors are complex tissues in which cancer cells are interwoven with fibroblasts, endothelial cells, pericytes, and inflammatory cells; these cells and the extracellular matrix constitute the tumor microenvironment (TME). The TME can modulate the behavior of tumor cells in terms of capacity to invade neighboring or distant tissues and drug resistance, by secreting tumor-promoting growth factors and cytokines. The poor efficacy of many anticancer drugs in clinical trials can be partly justified by the lack of predictive preclinical models. Prior to in vivo testing, biofabrication of tools for investigation in three-dimensional (3D) could be useful. Indeed, cells grown in 3D matrices…
