Traduir sota la dictadura franquista, traduir clandestinament: Poesia (1944-1945) i Ariel (1946-1951)
2013
After the Spanish Civil War, Francisco Franco’s dictatorship banned Catalan translations for a decade. But in 1948, Carles Riba’s translation of the Odyssey and Josep Maria Sagarra’s translation of the Divine Comedy were published, albeit with severe restrictions. These restrictions remained virtually unchanged until 1962, when the regime began allowing the publication of Catalan translations without prior censorship. In the 1940s, when the repression was at its fiercest, two clandestine journals in Catalan, Poetry (1944-1945) and Ariel (1946-1951), regularly translated a portion of one of the classics of Western literature, and also published contemporary and avant-garde material as well a…
Fusarium species recovered from the water distribution system of a French university hospital
2012
Abstract Dijon Hospital is a French tertiary care institution undergoing major renovation, and different microbiological controls revealed the presence of Fusarium spp. in the water distribution system. Because some Fusarium spp. can cause life-threatening opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients, an 8-month survey was conducted in two hospital sites in order to evaluate the prevalence of the fungi in the water system. In 2 units of one hospital site, 100% of the samples of tap-water were positive, with high concentrations of Fusarium spp. (up to 10 5 cfu/L). In the second hospital site, 94% of samples were positive, but generally with lower concentrations. The analysis of tr…
GLOBAL TRANSLATION OF COELIAC DISEASE HISTOLOGY AND OTHER GLUTEN RELATED MICROENTEROPATHY
2019
Introduction Intestinal epithelial cell damages generated by inflammation in coeliac disease (CD) ranges from sub-microscopic to severe architectural distortion. Translation of quantitative morphological changes in intestinal microorgans, like villus/crypt transformation, distribution of inflammatory cells and diagnostic cut offs, is lacking for CD and gluten related micro-enteropathies. Method Investigators from 22 centres, 9 countries of 4 continents, recruited CD patients with Marsh 0-II histology (n=299), NCGS (n=151), and 262 controls. Based on an agreed protocol, epithelial morphology including intraepithelial lymphocyte (IEL) density, villus height and crypt depth were measured in we…
The Effect of tRNA
2021
Transfer RNA[Ser]Sec carries multiple post-transcriptional modifications. The A37G mutation in tRNA[Ser]Sec abrogates isopentenylation of base 37 and has a profound effect on selenoprotein expression in mice. Patients with a homozygous pathogenic p.R323Q variant in tRNA-isopentenyl-transferase (TRIT1) show a severe neurological disorder, and hence we wondered whether selenoprotein expression was impaired. Patient fibroblasts with the homozygous p.R323Q variant did not show a general decrease in selenoprotein expression. However, recombinant human TRIT1R323Q had significantly diminished activities towards several tRNA substrates in vitro. We thus engineered mice conditionally deficient in Tr…
Gender and translation in Catalan: archaeological groundwork for assessing the state of affairs
2011
This article is the English version of “Gènere i traducció en català. Bases arqueològiques per a un estat de la qüestió” by Pilar Godayol. It was not published on the print version of MonTI for reasons of space. The online version of MonTI does not suffer from these limitations, and this is our way of promoting plurilingualism. In the last twenty-five years, interest in translation studies and its relation to gender has given rise to abundant and diverse research. This article seeks to offer a panoramic vision of the intersection between gender and translation in the Catalan language context, a point of departure for future research. On the one hand, we present the principal works, panorami…
Posttranslational N-glycosylation of the hepatitis B virus large envelope protein
2007
Abstract Background The addition of N-linked glycans to proteins is normally a cotranslational process that occurs during translocation of the nascent protein to the endoplasmic reticulum. Here, we report on an exception to this rule occurring on the hepatitis B virus (HBV) large L envelope protein that is a subject to co-plus posttranslational N-glycosylation. Results By using an improved detection system, we identified so far unrecognized, novel isoforms of L. Based on mutational analyses, the use of N-glycosylation inhibitors, and pulse-chase studies, we showed that these isoforms are due to posttranslational N-glycan addition to the asparagines 4 and 112 within the preS domain of L. Whi…
An altered intracellular distribution of the autoantigen La/SS-B when translated from a La mRNA isoform.
1997
Abstract Transcription of the gene encoding for the nuclear autoantigen La resulted in La mRNA isoforms. A promoter switching combined with an alternative splicing pathway replaced exon 1 with exon 1′. Similar to mRNAs encoding for ribosomal proteins, exon 1′ started with a pyrimidine-rich 5′-terminus. Moreover, exon 1′ contained 5′-GC-rich regions and an oligo(U)-tail of 23 uridine residues. Exon 1′ encoded for three open reading frames upstream of the La protein reading frame. In spite of this unusual structure, exon 1′ La mRNAs were translated not only in vitro but also in transiently transfected cells. The translational efficiency of exon 1′ La mRNA was about 14% of exon 1 La mRNA using…
Interaction mechanism of endogenous PP2A inhibitor protein ENSA with PP2A
2022
The vast diversity of protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) holoenzyme composition ensures its multifaceted role in the regulation of cellular growth and signal transduction. In several pathological conditions, such as cancer, PP2A is inhibited by endogenous inhibitor proteins. Several PP2A inhibitor proteins have been identified, one of which is α-endosulfine (ENSA). ENSA inhibits PP2A activity when it is phosphorylated at Ser67 by Greatwall (Gwl) kinase. The role of ENSA in PP2A inhibition is rather well characterized, but knowledge of the mechanism of inhibition is scarce. In this study, we have performed comprehensive structural characterization of ENSA, and its interaction with PP2A A- and var…
Regulation of the Expression of Nitric Oxide Synthase Isoforms
2000
Publisher Summary There is a large array of regulatory mechanisms for the expression of different nitric oxide synthases (NOS) isoforms. The high-output NOS II is not only turned on transcriptionally, but the stability of the transcripts and their translation can be regulated dynamically. In addition, the expressional levels of the servoregulatory, low-output enzymes, NOS I and NOS III, can also be adjusted to meet local demand. The original paradigm that nitrogen oxide (NO) is synthesized either by constitutive NO synthases or by inducible NOS II is no longer valid. This adds to the diversity of mechanisms controlling NO production in different cells and tissues. Whereas transcriptional re…
