Does the mastery of center-embedded linguistic structures distinguish humans from nonhuman primates?

2005

In a recentScience article, Fitch and Hauser (2004; hereafter, F&H) claimed to have demonstrated that cotton-top tamarins fail to learn an artificial language produced by a phrase structure grammar (Chomsky, 1957) generating center-embedded sentences, whereas adult humans easily learn such a language. We report an experiment replicating the results of F&H in humans but also showing that subjects learned the language without exploiting in any way the center-embedded structure. When the procedure was modified to make the processing of this structure mandatory, the subjects no longer showed evidence of learning. We propose a simple interpretation for the difference in performance observed in F…

Influence of ADAM10 on prion protein processing and scrapie infectiosity in vivo.

2009

Abstract Both the cellular prion protein (PrPc) and the amyloid precursor protein (APP) are physiologically subjected to complex proteolytic processing events. While for APP the proteinases involved – alpha-, beta- and gamma-secretase – have been identified in vitro and in vivo, the cleavage of PrPc by now has been linked only to the shedding activity of the metalloproteinase ADAM10 and/or ADAM17 in cell culture. Here we show that neuronal overexpression of the alpha-secretase ADAM10 in mice reduces all PrPc species detected in the brain instead of leading to enhanced amounts of specific cleavage products of PrPc. Additionally, the incubation time of mice after scrapie infection is signific…

The impact of translators’ ideology on the translation process: a reaction time experiment

2014

This paper presents an experiment designed to measure the influence that a translator’s political stance may exert on the time needed to find a translation solution when working with ideologically loaded concepts. To this purpose, a reaction time experiment (with positive and negative prompting conditions) was designed to evaluate whether words and expressions that are contrary to the translator’s ideology may slow down the translation process, making translators take longer to find an adequate translation. Our hypothesis predicted that the reaction time of translators would be bigger when the English word was presented with a negative “prompt”, that is, with a word they would feel contrary…

Structural Knowledge Extraction from Mobility Data

2016

Knowledge extraction has traditionally represented one of the most interesting challenges in AI; in recent years, however, the availability of large collections of data has increased the awareness that “measuring” does not seamlessly translate into “understanding”, and that more data does not entail more knowledge. We propose here a formulation of knowledge extraction in terms of Grammatical Inference (GI), an inductive process able to select the best grammar consistent with the samples. The aim is to let models emerge from data themselves, while inference is turned into a search problem in the space of consistent grammars, induced by samples, given proper generalization operators. We will …

L’assistenza linguistica come presupposto delle garanzie dello straniero

2015

Right to interpretation and translation in criminal proceedings is an important “precondition” of any individual guarantee. With the Legislative Decree no. 32 of 4 March 2014 the Italian Government implemented the Directive 2010/64/EU, though without incorporating some essential parts of the latter. In particular, the aforesaid Legislative Decree failed to ensure a real improvement of interpretations/translations quality. These serious and persistent deficiencies are even more visible in the specific field of migrants' rights in detention centers.

Hepassocin as a treatment for fulminant hepatic failure: will it translate from rats to human?

2010

Acute liver failure (ALF) is defined as the abrupt loss of hepatic cellular function in a patient without pre-existing liver disease, with the subsequent development of coagulopathy, jaundice and encephalopathy. It remains one of the most challenging medical emergencies, due to the multiorgan nature of the disease, the rapid evolution of the clinical condition and the need for multidisciplinary supportive interventions in order to assess the necessity for liver transplantation (LT) correctly.1 Despite different causes of ALF, the mode of cell death typically follows one of two patterns: necrosis or apoptosis; apoptosis is manifest by nuclear and cytoplasmic shrinkage without disturbance of …

«Lo ample si de les sagrades lletres» : criteris de traducció de la bíblia en els sermons del barroc valencià

2011

El present article analitza els mètodes de traducció bíblica seguits en la predicació a València durant el segle XVII, període en què destaca la prohibició de traslladar la Bíblia al pla a partir de la publicació de l'Índice inquisitorial de Valdés. Biblical translation criteria in Valencian Baroque sermons This article analyses the Biblical translation methods used for preaching purposes in Valencia during the 17th century, a period characterised by the ban on translations of the Bible into the vernacular following the publication of Valdés's Index.

Sur la francisation d’un toponyme écossais : l’« Argail » de Charles Nodier

2011

International audience; This study opposes, on the one hand, the concept exposed by linguist and theoretician Charles Nodier (1780-1844) in his Elementary Notions in Linguistics (1834) referring to the inalterable spelling of proper nouns, and, on the other hand, his practice as a storyteller and creator in his Trilby (1822). We will also consider answering the question of the gallicization of the toponym "Argyle" (allusion to the lake region in Scotland), spelled "Argail" by Nodier in his tale, contrary to all expectations. "Argail" , beyond the mere process of transliteration and trompe-l’oeil justifications revealed by Nodier himself in the preface of his book, opens up to subtle manipul…

The N-glycan processing in HT-29 cells is a function of their state of enterocytic differentiation. Evidence for an atypical traffic associated with …

1991

International audience; When the human colon cancer cells HT-29 undergo enterocytic differentiation, they correctly process their N-glycans, whereas their undifferentiated counterpart are unable to process Man9-8-GlcNAc2 species, the natural substrate of alpha-mannosidase I. As this enzyme is fully active in both HT-29 cell populations, we hypothesize that N-glycoproteins are unable to reach the cis Golgi, the site where alpha-mannosidase I has been localized. We have demonstrated this point by using 1-deoxymannojirimycin, leupeptin, and monensin. In the presence of 1-deoxymannojirimycin, a specific inhibitor of alpha-mannosidase I, differentiated HT-29 cells, as expected, accumulate Man9-8…
