Correction: Widespread white matter microstructural abnormalities in bipolar disorder: evidence from mega- and meta-analyses across 3033 individuals

2019

Fronto-limbic white matter (WM) abnormalities are assumed to lie at the heart of the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder (BD); however, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies have reported heterogeneous results and it is not clear how the clinical heterogeneity is related to the observed differences. This study aimed to identify WM abnormalities that differentiate patients with BD from healthy controls (HC) in the largest DTI dataset of patients with BD to date, collected via the ENIGMA network. We gathered individual tensor-derived regional metrics from 26 cohorts leading to a sample size of N = 3033 (1482 BD and 1551 HC). Mean fractional anisotropy (FA) from 43 regions of interest (ROI) a…

Circadian rhythms in ischaemic heart disease

2022

Abstract Circadian rhythms are internal regulatory processes controlled by molecular clocks present in essentially every mammalian organ that temporally regulate major physiological functions. In the cardiovascular system, the circadian clock governs heart rate, blood pressure, cardiac metabolism, contractility, and coagulation. Recent experimental and clinical studies highlight the possible importance of circadian rhythms in the pathophysiology, outcome, or treatment success of cardiovascular disease, including ischaemic heart disease. Disturbances in circadian rhythms are associated with increased cardiovascular risk and worsen outcome. Therefore, it is important to consider circadian rhy…

Hepassocin as a treatment for fulminant hepatic failure: will it translate from rats to human?

2010

Acute liver failure (ALF) is defined as the abrupt loss of hepatic cellular function in a patient without pre-existing liver disease, with the subsequent development of coagulopathy, jaundice and encephalopathy. It remains one of the most challenging medical emergencies, due to the multiorgan nature of the disease, the rapid evolution of the clinical condition and the need for multidisciplinary supportive interventions in order to assess the necessity for liver transplantation (LT) correctly.1 Despite different causes of ALF, the mode of cell death typically follows one of two patterns: necrosis or apoptosis; apoptosis is manifest by nuclear and cytoplasmic shrinkage without disturbance of …

Hypoxia-induced dysfunction of rat diaphragm

2004

Contains fulltext : 47331.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) Oxidants may play a role in hypoxia-induced respiratory muscle dysfunction. In the present study we hypothesized that hypoxia-induced impairment in diaphragm contractility is associated with elevated peroxynitrite generation. In addition, we hypothesized that strenuous contractility of the diaphragm increases peroxynitrite formation. In vitro force-frequency relationship, isotonic fatigability, and nitrotyrosine levels were assessed under hypoxic (Po(2) approximately 6.5 kPa) and hyperoxic (Po(2) approximately 88.2 kPa) control conditions and also in the presence of authentic peroxynitrite (60 min), ebselen (60 min), and t…

Phase II study of pemetrexed and cisplatin plus cetuximab followed by pemetrexed and cetuximab maintenance therapy in patients with advanced nonsquam…

2013

Abstract Objectives The aim was to determine if combined pemetrexed, cisplatin, and cetuximab was efficacious and safe as first-line treatment in advanced nonsquamous non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Patients and methods In this single-arm, multicenter clinical trial, patients with Stage IIIB/IV nonsquamous NSCLC received first-line therapy consisting of pemetrexed (500mg/m 2 ) and cisplatin (75mg/m 2 ) on Day 1 (21-day cycles) plus weekly cetuximab (400mg/m 2 loading dose, then 250mg/m 2 ) for 4–6 cycles. Non-progressing patients received maintenance therapy consisting of pemetrexed and cetuximab as above until disease progression. All patients received vitamin supplementation, dexameth…

Impact of T-cell-mediated immune response on xenogeneic heart valve transplantation: short-term success and mid-term failure.

2017

Objectives Allogeneic frozen cryopreserved heart valves (allografts or homografts) are commonly used in clinical practice. A major obstacle for their application is the limited availability in particular for paediatrics. Allogeneic large animal studies revealed that alternative ice-free cryopreservation (IFC) results in better matrix preservation and reduced immunogenicity. The objective of this study was to evaluate xenogeneic (porcine) compared with allogeneic (ovine) IFC heart valves in a large animal study. Methods IFC xenografts and allografts were transplanted in 12 juvenile merino sheep for 1-12 weeks. Immunohistochemistry, ex vivo computed tomography scans and transforming growth fa…

News from the Underground: What were the most important scientific/clinical take-home messages for juniors?

2014

The ERS International Congress has traditionally been a splendid opportunity to present current updates in clinical respiratory medicine and new research findings. This year’s programme was packed, making it impossible to attend all sessions, but juniors interested in specific fields were there for you to highlight the most important take home messages from the 2014 ERS International Congress in Munich. Amongst the most important news for the clinicians was the publication of a Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) guidelines update [1]. In the updated guidelines, the heterogeneity of asthma is emphasised, suggesting the need of “4P” (Personalised, Predictive, Preventive and Participatory) tr…

Strategies for annotation and curation of translational databases: the eTUMOUR project

2012

Altres ajuts: LSHC/CT2004-503094 The eTUMOUR (eT) multi-centre project gathered in vivo and ex vivo magnetic resonance (MR) data, as well as transcriptomic and clinical information from brain tumour patients, with the purpose of improving the diagnostic and prognostic evaluation of future patients. In order to carry this out, among other work, a database-the eTDB-was developed. In addition to complex permission rules and software and management quality control (QC), it was necessary to develop anonymization, processing and data visualization tools for the data uploaded. It was also necessary to develop sophisticated curation strategies that involved on one hand, dedicated fields for QC-gene…
