Unified mapping of the dynamics of solitons in fiber-optic waveguides

2013

This thesis examines the dynamical behaviour of solitons which are affected, when entering a fiber-optic waveguide, by a slight distortion of profile as compared to the stationary profile in the guide. Our theoretical model combines the propagation equation of the electric field (Non-Linear Schrödinger Equation) and the system of equations of evolution of the physical parameters of the pulse (derived from the collective coordinates theory). We establish a general mapping which reveals an unsuspected diversity of dynamic behaviour around the stationary state of the pulse, in relation with the initial perturbation of the pulse's profile. This mapping establishes a classification of solitons i…

FDTD characterization of evanescent modes-multimode analysis of waveguide discontinuities

2000

In this paper, a finite-difference time-domain numerical dispersion relation for evanescent waves is derived, and its impact on the modeling accuracy is studied. The numerical evanescent constant is found to differ from the analytical one. As a result, a correction must be used to compute discontinuity parameters. This influences the reference plane chosen for the analysis of propagating modes. Moreover, on calculating multimode transmission and reflection coefficients, the dispersion for evanescent higher order modes is determinant. The dispersive relation is derived, discussed, and used to correct the evanescent constants for the multimode analysis of a waveguide discontinuity.

The nature of radiohaloes in biotite: Experimental studies and modeling

2001

Several micro-techniques (confocal laser-Raman microprobe, optical absorption micro-spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, electron microprobe analysis) were employed in the detailed characterization of radiohaloes in biotites from two Variscan rocks from Germany. The studied biotites are intermediate members of the phlogopite-annite series with Mg/Fe 2+ ratios in the range 1.6–1.0. Radiohaloes in biotite resulted from the impact of 4 He cores (α-particles) emitted from actinide-bearing inclusions. Monte Carlo simulations yielded α ( 238 U, 235 U, and 232 Th series) penetration ranges in biotite between 12.5 and 37.3 μm, which are in reasonable agreement with the ob…

Erbb2 regulates neuromuscular synapse formation and is essential for muscle spindle development

2003

Neuregulins and their Erbb receptors have been implicated in neuromuscular synapse formation by regulating gene expression in subsynaptic nuclei. To analyze the function of Erbb2 in this process, we have inactivated the Erbb2 gene in developing muscle fibers by Cre/Lox-mediated gene ablation. Neuromuscular synapses form in the mutant mice, but the synapses are less efficient and contain reduced levels of acetylcholine receptors. Surprisingly, the mutant mice also show proprioceptive defects caused by abnormal muscle spindle development. Sensory Ia afferent neurons establish initial contact with Erbb2-deficient myotubes. However, functional spindles never develop. Taken together, our data su…

Antagonistic feedback loops involving Rau and Sprouty in the Drosophila eye control neuronal and glial differentiation.

2013

During development, differentiation is often initiated by the activation of different receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs), which results in the tightly regulated activation of cytoplasmic signaling cascades. In the differentiation of neurons and glia in the developing Drosophila eye, we found that the proper intensity of RTK signaling downstream of fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) or epidermal growth factor receptor required two mutually antagonistic feedback loops. We identified a positive feedback loop mediated by the Ras association (RA) domain-containing protein Rau that sustained Ras activity and counteracted the negative feedback loop mediated by Sprouty. Rau has two RA domains t…

A system-level power saving approach for cellular networks with microcells/picocells

2011

Network power consumption reduction has recently become an active research topic. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to save power consumption of a three-cell microcellular network. When the traffic load in the middle cell is low, it can be switched-off and its users are covered. This is enabled by increasing the transmission power of one sector antenna in the two neighboring cells. Numerical results show that by increasing antenna transmission power of the two sectors, the overall network power consumption can be reduced.

Preferential Type II Muscle Fiber Damage From Plyometric Exercise

2012

Context: Plyometric training has been successfully used in different sporting contexts. Studies that investigated the effect of plyometric training on muscle morphology are limited, and results are controversial with regard to which muscle fiber type is mainly affected. Objective: To analyze the skeletal muscle structural and ultrastructural change induced by an acute bout of plyometric exercise to determine which type of muscle fibers is predominantly damaged. Design: Descriptive laboratory study. Setting: Research laboratory. Patients or Other Participants: Eight healthy, untrained individuals (age = 22 ± 1 years, height = 179.2 ± 6.4 cm, weight = 78.9 ± 5.9 kg). Intervention(s): Partici…
