An Empirical Analysis of the Lead Lag Relationship Between CDS and Stock Market

2018

This paper complements the recent literature providing a thorough research of the lead lag relationship between stock and sovereign CDS markets using a rolling VAR framework. We find that the transmission channel between the credit and stock market exist. This phenomenon is time varying, it seems to be related with the economic cycle and in general, it’s more intense in US than in Europe.

Systèmes financiers et canaux de transmission de la politique monétaire

2010

This dissertation analyses the consequences of transformations in the financial sphere on the transmission channels of decisions in monetary policy in industrialized countries over the past several years. We observe that as a result of these transformations, banking institutions have evolved from an originate to hold model to an originate to distribute model. This has enabled banks to turn more toward derivative products and credit risk transfer instruments. We demonstrate that these techniques of active/passive management have completely revolutionized the theoretical foundations of traditional channels and in particular the credit channel. Our analysis of these landmark changes is organiz…

Enabling Backoff and Eliminating Redundant Idle Period for Medium Access in LTE-U

2017

To address the burgeoning demand for mobile data, 3GPP is actively studying the capability of operating LTE in the unlicensed band, referred to as LTE-U. One of the main challenges of this approach is to maintain better coexistence between WiFi and LTE-U devices. To enable the coexistence, the listen before talk (LBT) principle has been adopted for LTE-U medium access with two flavors of mechanisms, i.e., load based equipment (LBE) and frame based equipment (FBE) access. In this paper, we consider the FBE mechanism and enhance its performance by introducing a backoff procedure for LTE devices. We investigate the original FBE mechanism defined by 3GPP and the enhanced FBE (E- FBE) mechanism fr…

Preamble Sampling MAC Protocol for Low Power Wireless Sensor Networks with IEEE 802.15.4 Transceivers

2006

In this paper a preamble sampling MAC protocol for low power wireless sensor networks is proposed. The article describes the implementation of the protocol using network nodes equipped with the Chipcon CC2420 802.15.4 transceiver. The power consumption of the transceiver has been measured and the MAC protocol has been adapted to the transceiver properties. The results show the trade-off between power consumption and transmission delay for this algorithm during the communication process.

Efficient Design of Waveguide Manifold Multiplexers Based on Low-Order EM Distributed Models

2015

In this paper, a new systematic technique to design manifold-coupled multiplexers in waveguide technology is proposed. The new technique uses generalized low-order electromagnetic (EM) distributed models, which constitute a half-way point between the fast, but imprecise, analytical models, and the more accurate, but costly, full-wave EM models. The method can be applied to contiguous and noncontiguous channel multiplexers, in both E-plane or H-plane configurations. This paper covers the complete design procedure for manifold multiplexers, starting from the required specifications and finishing with the physical dimensions. After explaining the general design technique for multiplexers with …

EFFECTS OF THE PENETRATION OF WIND POWER IN THE BRAZILIAN ELECTRICITY MARKET

2016

Climate variability has been the main driver for renewables in the Brazilian electricity market. This article analyzes the vulnerabilities of the dependence on hydropower in renewable energy production due to climate variation, as well as wind power penetration in Brazil, given a set of wind industry policies. Despite Brazilian renewable energy increase, the study shows the impact in energy supply in north region, due to the lack of transmission infrastructure. In Brazil, the potential trade-offs between renewables growth, and transmission infrastructure inconsistencies in terms of policy implementation are not yet well analyzed. Simulation results show the potential conflicts between energ…

Genomic Analysis of Bacterial Outbreaks

2016

The study of outbreaks of infectious diseases has been revolutionized by the current availability of fast and efficient, high-throughput methods capable of yielding the nucleotide sequence of complete genomes of viruses and bacteria within a few days, or even hours. These methods are replacing previous molecular techniques which have been used for the past 30 years, although many of them are still the usual approach for many such investigations. Here we review the major technologies currently in use for high-throughput sequencing of bacterial genomes emphasizing their advantages and drawbacks for the analysis of outbreaks. The use of more efficient methods does not necessarily mean that all…

Magnetically excited breather modes in an overlap-geometry Josephson tunnel junction

2022

A scheme for the controlled generation of single traveling sine- Gordon breathers in a long Josephson junction is described. In the presence of dissipation, a direct current source, and thermal fluctuations, the theoretical analysis shows that, through the nonlinear supratransmission effect, tailored magnetic pulses at the junction’s edge can effectively yield breather modes only.

Mass determination, subunit organization and control of oligomerization states of keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH).

1997

Analytical dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) of freeze-dried unstained specimens of keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH; from Megathura crenulata, a prosobranch gastropod) gave a molecular mass of 400 kDa for the subunit of KLH1 and of 345 kDa for the subunit of KLH2, which confirms our published values from SDS/PAGE. Within the 400-kDa KLH1 subunit we identified, by limited proteolysis, isolation of fragments and N-terminal sequencing, eight distinct 45-60 kDa functional domains (termed 1a through 1h) and determined their sequential arrangement. The KLH1 domains differ biochemically and immunologically from each other and from the previously characterized seven domains…

A free plate model can predict guided modes propagating in tubular bone-mimicking phantoms

2014

The goal of this work was to show that a non-absorbing free plate model can predict with a reasonable accuracy guided modes measured in bone-mimicking phantoms that have circular cross-section. Experiments were carried out on uncoated and coated phantoms using a clinical axial transmission setup. Adjustment of the plate model to the experimental data yielded estimates for the waveguide characteristics (thickness, bulk wave velocities). Fair agreement was achieved over a frequency range of 0.4 to 1.6 MHz. A lower accuracy observed for the thinnest bone-mimicking phantoms was caused by limitations in the wave number measurements rather than by the model itself.
