Validation of a Novel Sensing Approach for Continuous Pavement Monitoring Using Full-Scale APT Testing

2023

The objective of this paper is to present a novel approach for the continuous monitoring of pavement condition through the use of combined piezoelectric sensing and novel condition-based interpretation methods. The performance of the developed approach is validated for the detection of bottom-up fatigue cracking through full-scale accelerated pavement testing (APT). The innovative piezoelectric sensors are installed at the bottom of a thin 102 mm (4 in.) asphalt layer. The structure is then loaded until failure (up to 1 million loading cycles in this study). The condition-based approach, used in this work, does not rely on stain measurements and allows users to bypass the need for any struc…

Measuring diversity. A review and an empirical analysis

2021

Abstract Maximum diversity problems arise in many practical settings from facility location to social networks, and constitute an important class of NP-hard problems in combinatorial optimization. There has been a growing interest in these problems in recent years, and different mathematical programming models have been proposed to capture the notion of diversity. They basically consist of selecting a subset of elements of a given set in such a way that a measure based on their pairwise distances is maximized to achieve dispersion or representativeness. In this paper, we perform an exhaustive comparison of four mathematical models to achieve diversity over the public domain library MDPLIB, …

PRIVANET: An Efficient Pseudonym Changing and Management Framework for Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks

2020

Protecting the location privacy is one of the main challenges in vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs). Although, standardization bodies, such as IEEE and ETSI, have adopted a pseudonym-based scheme as a solution for this problem, an efficient pseudonym changing and management is still an open issue. In this paper, we propose PRIVANET, a complete and efficient pseudonym changing and management framework. The PRIVANET has a hierarchical structure and considers the vehicular geographic area as a grid. Each cell of this grid contains one or many logical zones, called vehicular location privacy zones (VLPZs). These zones can easily be deployed over the widespread roadside infrastructures (RIs), su…

Key drivers of consumer purchase of airline tickets: A cross-cultural analysis

2013

Abstract This paper considers drivers of online airline ticket purchasing behaviour, and analyses the influence of attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioural control on such decisions in two cultures. A number of hypotheses are examined using a sample of online shoppers in Spain and The Netherlands. We find that perceived control, subjective norm and attitude positively influence airline tickets online purchase intention in Spain, but in the Netherlands attitude is the key driver.

Maritime Supply Chain Security: A critical review

2013

The importance of container security for international trade is well established and has been the subject of recent research in the follow up of the implementation of global security initiatives and the imperative of avoiding supply chain disruptions and reduce vulnerability. This article provides a review of the emerging literature on container security specifically in its interface with global logistics systems. The paper highlights the topics that have emerged as well-established research areas and indicates in what areas scholarly attention is most needed.

Global organizations and supply chain: new research avenues in the international human resource management

2014

Purpose– The purpose of this paper is to aim at proposing a research agenda in the intersection of strategic supply chain management and logistics (SCML) of global organizations from the perspective of international human resource management (IHRM).Design/methodology/approach– To disclose the intellectual structure of research to date across both fields, the content of up to 280 articles dealing with IHRM and 174 papers addressing challenges in SCML in global organizations from a human resource management (HRM) viewpoint were analyzed. A stepwise hierarchical cluster and discriminant analysis were conducted to map a joint research agenda. Approaches from Upper Echelons theory and Co-Evoluti…

Impact of reverse logistics on supply chain performance

2013

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyse the impact of reverse logistics on order and inventory variance amplification in a single-echelon supply chain (SC) and to propose a new order policy for dampening such amplification. Design/methodology/approach – A general review of the literature on sustainable operations and on the impact of reverse logistics on SC performance provides the foundation for the study. The authors use difference equation math approach for modelling and analysing a closed SC. A proper design of experiment and data collected from the European Union statistics validate the obtained numerical results. Findings – The variability of reverse flow in a closed loop S…

A framework for defining a sustainability rating system for railway track-beds

2017

Railways perform a significant role in the transportation system and they have relevant environmental, economic and social impacts. They are currently engineered optimizing every singular aspect rather than considering a broader system for improving the sustainability of the overall infrastructure. Thus, it is necessary to promote an effort to define a global sustainability framework for conceiving the design, construction and management of railway infrastructure. The Sustainable Rating System (SRS) proposed in this paper is a tool under development that evaluates different alternatives of railway track-bed structure. Inspired by similar efforts in the field of road engineering such as Gree…

Exploring the feasibility of introducing electric freight vehicles in the short food supply chain: A multi-stakeholder approach

2021

Abstract The transition towards more sustainable approaches in the Food Supply Chain was concretely visible in the implementation of alternative models, like the Short Food Supply Chain. Some authors raise doubts on the environmental impact of this model, in particular for the externalities caused by the transport system, suggesting the adoption of Electric Freight vehicles. By adopting a multi-stakeholder approach, the objective of this study is to explore both the barriers and potentialities involved in the adoption of Electric Freight vehicles in the Short Food Supply Chain, and the existence of a shared strategy at the system level able to foster their adoption. Results suggest that, fo…
