2014
The fear of reproducing one’s family pattern is a recurring theme in Banks’s works. The notion of filiation is thus central in his novel Affliction, in which the narrator Rolfe Whitehouse evokes the tense relationship between his brother Wade and their father Glenn, a violent man, both physically and verbally, who has traumatized him since childhood. Wade is obsessed with the idea of being a good father to his daughter Jill, but he ends up making the same mistakes as his ancestors by becoming in his turn a violent alcoholic. The systematic use of the third person throughout the text underlines the ambiguity of the narrator, who talks about the members of his family but keeps them at a dista…

Psychological support for children who are victims of abuse in Cambodia: Culture as a developmental tool of traumatic experience
2020
When psychologists step in the humanitarian field, they are confronted with cultural and language issues during their intervention. The way of expressing trauma is deeply linked with the cultural background, thus it should guide and shape the psychological support to make it more appropriate. Within a Khmer NGO, we have set up a psychological support based on different sorts of mediation. Our patients were eight children with the same set of symptoms: recurrence and massive anxiety, most of the time appearing through animist cultural representations. In this article, we will first present the situation of Bonat, witness of domestic violence and of his mother’s death, and then the situation …
Barotrauma during Noninvasive Respiratory Support in COVID-19 Pneumonia Outside ICU: The Ancillary COVIMIX-2 Study
2023
Background: Noninvasive respiratory support (NIRS) has been extensively used during the COVID-19 surge for patients with acute respiratory failure. However, little data are available about barotrauma during NIRS in patients treated outside the intensive care unit (ICU) setting. Methods: COVIMIX-2 was an ancillary analysis of the previous COVIMIX study, a large multicenter observational work investigating the frequencies of barotrauma (i.e., pneumothorax and pneumomediastinum) in adult patients with COVID-19 interstitial pneumonia. Only patients treated with NIRS outside the ICU were considered. Baseline characteristics, clinical and radiological disease severity, type of ventilatory support…

At the time of the evacuation nine of the children were between two and five years of age and one was seven years old. At the time of the interviews they were approaching their seventieth birthday. 2016
