Complex regional pain syndrome - phenotypic characteristics and potential biomarkers
2018
Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a pain condition that usually affects a single limb, often following an injury. The underlying pathophysiology seems to be complex and probably varies between patients. Clinical diagnosis is based on internationally agreed-upon criteria, which consider the reported symptoms, presence of signs and exclusion of alternative causes. Research into CRPS biomarkers to support patient stratification and improve diagnostic certainty is an important scientific focus, and recent progress in this area provides an opportunity for an up-to-date topical review of measurable disease-predictive, diagnostic and prognostic parameters. Clinical and biochemical attribute…
Normal and Abnormal Tissue Classification in Positron Emission Tomography Oncological Studies
2018
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging is increasingly used in radiotherapy environment as well as for staging and assessing treatment response. The ability to classify PET tissues, as normal versus abnormal tissues, is crucial for medical analysis and interpretation. For this reason, a system for classifying PET area is implemented and validated. The proposed classification is carried out using k-nearest neighbor (KNN) method with the stratified K-Fold Cross-Validation strategy to enhance the classifier reliability. A dataset of eighty oncological patients are collected for system training and validation. For every patient, lesion (abnormal tissue) and background (normal tissue around …
A Novel Approach to Identify Candidate Prognostic Factors for Hepatitis C Treatment Response Integrating Clinical and Viral Genetic Data
2015
The combined therapy of pegylated interferon (IFN) plus ribavirin (RBV) has been for a long time the standard treatment for patients infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV). In the case of genotype 1, only 38%–48% of patients have a positive response to the combined treatment. In previous studies, viral genetic information has been occasionally included as a predictor. Here, we consider viral genetic variation in addition to 11 clinical and 19 viral populations and evolutionary parameters to identify candidate baseline prognostic factors that could be involved in the treatment outcome. We obtained potential prognostic models for HCV subtypes la and lb in combination as well as separately. We …

JYVÄSKYLÄN YLIOPISTO Psykologian laitos NAAMANKA, ELINA & SUUTARI, VILLE: Ryhmämuotoinen hyväksymis- ja omistautumisterapia unettomuudesta kärsiville - hoitotulosta ennustavat tekijät Pro gradu-tutkielma, 33 s., 3 liittes. Ohjaajat: Jukka Kaartinen, Raimo Lappalainen Psykologia Toukokuu 2014 Tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin unettomuudesta kärsiville suunnatun ryhmämuotoisen hyväksymis- ja omistautumisterapian (HOT) onnistuneeseen hoitotulokseen vaikuttavia tekijöitä. Tarkastelun kohteena olivat tutkittavien demografiset muuttujat, psykologinen ja fyysinen hyvinvointi, unettomuuden haittaavuus, HOT:n prosessit sekä persoonallisuustekijät. Näiden muuttujien ennustavuutta hoitotulokseen tarkastelti…
Imaging of hepatocellular carcinoma: a pilot international survey
2020
Purpose To perform an international survey on current practices in imaging-based surveillance, diagnosis, staging, and assessment of treatment response for HCC. Materials and methods Three themes were covered in this international survey: demographics of respondents and liver imaging expertise; imaging practices for screening, surveillance, diagnosis, staging, and assessment of treatment response for HCC; and diagnostic imaging systems used. Descriptive summaries were created. Results Of 151 respondents, 22.5% were from Asia, 6.0% from Europe, 19.9% from North America, 26.5% from South America, and 25.2% from Australasia; 57.0% respondents worked in academic and 34.4% in private or mixed se…
Characterising individual response to mepolizumab treatment
2020
Background: Patients with severe eosinophilic asthma (SEA) often have heterogenous phenotypes with periods of asthma worsening, making it difficult to assess mepolizumab treatment response. Aims: To define patient level variables for mepolizumab treatment response. Methods: In this post-hoc analysis we examined mepolizumab response in patients with SEA (≥2 exacerbations in prior year) in the 32-week, randomised, placebo-controlled MENSA study and the following 52-week, open-label COSMOS study. Patients who completed both studies and received mepolizumab throughout were included (n=311). Results: In MENSA, 67% and 21% of patients had 0 or 1 exacerbations, respectively, and were considered re…
Forty-One Recent Cases of Invasive Zygomycosis From a Global Clinical Registry.
2009
Abstract Abstract 4736 Background Invasive zygomycosis accounts for a significant proportion of all invasive fungal diseases (IFD), but clinical data on the clinical course and treatment response is limited. Methods Fungiscope” - A Global Rare Fungal Infection Registry is a university-based case registry that collects data of patients with rare IFD, using a web-based electronic case form at www.fungiscope.net. Results Fourty-one patients with invasive zygomycosis were registered. Five were pediatric (12.2%), 28 (68.3%) male. Median age was 49 years (range 2-88). Most common underlying conditions were malignancies (n=26; 63.4%), diabetes mellitus (n=7; 17%) and solid organ transplant (n=4; 9…
