Optic disc positioning and blood vessels extraction on eye fundus
2009
This paper presents two methods aimed to the optic disc positioning on the retinal images. The first is based on a template of the entire image, while the second is based on the retinal vascularisation. For this second task, also a vessel extraction method is provided. Both the algorithm have been tested on test images of the Drive Database.
Concurrent photo sequence organization
2012
Personal photo album organization is a highly demanding domain where advanced tools are required to manage large photo collections. In contrast to many previous works, that try to solve the problem of organizing a single user photo sequence, we present a new technique to account for the concurrent photo sequence organization problem, that is the problem of organizing multiple photo sequences taken during the same event. Given a set of sequences acquired at the same place during the same temporal window by several users using different cameras, our framework is intended to capture the evolution of the event and groups photos based on temporal proximity and visual content. The method automati…
Image Segmentation through a Hierarchy of Minimum Spanning Trees
2012
Many approaches have been adopted to solve the problem of image segmentation. Among them a noticeable part is based on graph theory casting the pixels as nodes in a graph. This paper proposes an algorithm to select clusters in the images (corresponding to relevant segments in the image) corresponding to the areas induced in the images through the search of the Minimum Spanning Tree (MST). In particular is is based on a clustering algorithm that extracts clusters computing a hierarchy of Minimum Spanning Trees. The main drawback of this previous algorithm is that the dimension of the cluster is not predictable and a relevant portion of found clusters can be composed by micro-clusters that ar…
Apologia del libero mercato
2019
In a dusty square of an ancient neighborhood of Palermo there is a miserable second-hand market, called “mercato dell’Albergheria. Merchandise sold is mainly stuff collected from garbage. Those who sell and buy are some of the poorest and most marginalized among urban population, so none of the sellers has a permission or pays any tax. Nevertheless, Albergheria market had existed undisturbed for about twenty years. It therefore seems to be an actualization of the free market ideal. The State is not there: neither to give, nor to require. In the main square, where the market is, a peculiar coincidence occurs: one of the buildings, an ex-cinema, is now a lecture-hall of the Law Department of …
Etnografia giuridica a Ballarò. Per dirottare il verso del sapere
2021
In Palermo, the Law department and a poor bazar of used things share the same square. Even if so closed, the academy and the market ignored and inspect each other with a mutual suspect for a long time. This happened as long as in an academic course an experiment of collaboration between students and merchants has been launched. The aim was to look at the right from the margin and to rewrite the rules together. The produced regulation draft has been used by the Municipality to make the market official. From this experience emerges an idea of university epistemologically humble, able to renounce to the title of knowledge’s monopolist and to activate processes of knowledge co-creation.
La città, il mercato e la legge
2019
Inchiesta a Ballarò. Il diritto visto dal margine
2019

The Orbi Tradition: Blind Street Singers in Sicily
2019
In Sicily, the street music was primarily entrusted to a class of professional singers and players called orbi (“blind”). In 1661 orbi gathered in Palermo at the brotherhood of the Immaculate Conception under the protection of the Jesuits, marking their first official appearance in the historical record. The testimonies of the activity of orbi between the 18th and 19th centuries offers a detailed account of both their repertoire – composed mainly of sacred songs, but also of storii (“narrative songs”), canzuni (“songs”), ditties and dance music – and their performative contecxts. For instance, they were called to perform at religious celebrations, weddings and convivial events, serenades, a…
