Effects of male removal on female foraging behavior in the Eurasian treecreeper

In old, spruce-dominated forests of central Finland, Eurasian treecreepers Certhia familiaris divide their territories spatially during the breeding season. Females forage primarily on the upper parts of the tree trunks, while males use the lower parts of the tree trunks. In this study we removed males from eight territories in the early nestling period to see if the mate's absence would change the foraging patterns of the resident female. Widowed females foraged at lower heights, thus behaving more like paired males. These females also spent less time on each tree and on each foraging bout than did paired females. Forest fragmentation and local disturbance are prevailing threats to tropical forest ecosystems and affect frugivore communities and animal seed dispersal in different ways. However, very little is known about the effects of anthropogenic forest edges and of local disturbance on the structure and robustness of plant–frugivore networks. The tree heath (Erica arborea L.), a small evergreen tree found in the Mediterranean region and parts of Eastern and Central Africa, produces lignotubers that are highly valued for making smoking pipes. The Peloritani Mountains of northeastern Sicily are historically one of the most important areas in Italy for the production of these high quality lignotubers, known as briar root wood. In this chapter, the directors included in the book themselves take the floor. They reveal the major influences they have experienced as artists and, if they had to draw an artistic family tree, whom they would include on it. One of them, Krystian Lupa, has literally drawn his artistic family tree. The directors also outline the trends that have had the most formative impact on their aesthetics and work. All this is especially shared for the readers of this book. Only in the case of the late Lithuanian director Eimuntas Nekrosius is an excerpt of an existing interview used.

Phylogenetic analyses of Fusarium graminearum strains from cereals in Italy, and characterisation of their molecular and chemical chemotypes

The Fusarium graminearum species complex (FGSC) is a pathogen of durum wheat and other cereals worldwide. The complex consists of at least 15 species that can produce various mycotoxins, including trichothecenes, associated with human and animals toxicoses. In particular, deoxynivalenol (DON), nivalenol (NIV) and their different acetylated derivatives can be produced by the different chemotypes of the complex. The phylogenetic relationships of Ildobates neboti Español (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Harpalinae) were investigated based on three nuclear genes (full 18S rRNA, and a fragment of each 28S rRNAand wingless).We compiled a data set using published sequences of 32 members of Harpalinae including one example each of Dryptini (genus Desera), Galeritini (Galerita) and Zuphiini (Thalpius), plus three Brachininae as outgroups.
