A new marker for sea surface temperature trend during the last centuries in temperate areas: Vermetid reef

2004

The presence of Vermetid reefs in temperate waters, their diffusion in the Mediterranean Sea, and the possibility of performing 14 C ages allowed the use of Vermetids as an indicator of sea level changes. We present new data on sea climate trend fluctuations that could be interpreted as Sea Surface Temperature (SST) variations, recorded on Vermetid (Dendropoma petraeum) reefs, by means of isotopic analysis. The isotopic records show positive values of the d 18 O relative to present-day values in the period between 1600 and 1850 AD; this deviation occurs in association with the climatic cooling event known as Little Ice Age (LIA). Subsequently, we can observe the warming trend that character…

Characterizing land condition variability in Ferlo, Senegal (2001–2009) using multi-temporal 1-km Apparent Green Cover (AGC) SPOT Vegetation data

2011

Abstract The ecosystem state or ‘land condition’ can be characterized by a set of attributes, which show variations at different temporal scales. A multi-resolution analysis (MRA) based on the wavelet transform (WT) has been implemented to examine the land condition of a dryland region in Ferlo (Senegal) over the period 2001–2009. This methodology has proven to be useful for smoothing time series while considering those temporal resolutions that incorporate information about the vegetation dynamics. For this purpose, time series of the 1-km Apparent Green Cover (AGC) from the 10-day composites SPOT Vegetation (VGT) data are analyzed. Two relevant outputs from the MRA, A 1 (de-noised) and th…

The Start of a Journey to the Cloud in the Developing World: A Case Study of Egypt

2015

Cloud computing (CC) is becoming a global market trend that all businesses, sooner or later, will go for. Moving to the cloud is a long journey for developing countries that became aware of its importance to their economic development. Egypt started this journey with collective efforts from all stakeholders (i.e., Government institutes, national and international cloud providers, private businesses, and training institutes) to draw the roadmap for CC adoption in Egypt. CC adoption in Egypt is influenced by some enabling and inhibiting factors. These factors are explored by conducting an exploratory case study. The findings of this study are analyzed by utilizing concepts from the neo-instit…

Veränderung von Inzidenz und Mortalität von Kopf-Hals-Malignomen in Rheinland-Pfalz, 2000–2009

2014

The Correlation between Adolescent Daily Breakfast Consumption and Socio-Demographic:Trends in 23 European Countries Participating in the Health Beha…

2023

Breakfast is often considered the most important meal of the day and can benefit adolescent health in several ways. The aims of the present study were (1) to identify adolescents’ socio-demographic (sex, family affluence and family structure) determinants of daily breakfast consumption (DBC) and (2) to describe trends in DBC among adolescents across 23 countries. Cross-sectional surveys of nationally representative samples of adolescents (aged 11, 13, and 15 years) (n = 589,737) participating in the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) survey from 2002 to 2018 were used. Multilevel logistic regression analyses modeled DBC over time, adjusted for family affluence, family structure…

The academic field of Sport Management: past, present and future

2019

The industry of sport currently has a big impact on our society, in areas as diverse as economics, mass media, health or politics. As a result of this new trend, a specific academic field, identified as ‘Sport Management’ has emerged in the past years. A study field that appears to have experienced a substantive growth over a short period of time. This paper has conducted a review on the relevant aspects that have shaped the identity of Sport Management as an academic field. For that purpose, documentary sources have been used as reference with a main focus in those produced by relevant authors of the Sport Management field, granting special attention to the theoretical construction of the …

The role of humidity in associations of high temperature with mortality: A multicountry, multicity study

2019

BACKGROUND: There is strong experimental evidence that physiologic stress from high temperatures is greater if humidity is higher. However, heat indices developed to allow for this have not consistently predicted mortality better than dry-bulb temperature. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to clarify the potential contribution of humidity an addition to temperature in predicting daily mortality in summer by using a large multicountry dataset. METHODS: In 445 cities in 24 countries, we fit a time-series regression model for summer mortality with a distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) for temperature (up to lag 3) and supplemented this with a range of terms for relative humidity (RH) and its interaction…

Organization of intensive cardiac care units in Europe: Results of a multinational survey

2020

Background: The present survey aims to describe the intensive cardiac care unit organization and admission policies in Europe. Methods: A total of 228 hospitals (61% academic) from 27 countries participated in this survey. In addition to the organizational aspects of the intensive cardiac care units, including classification of the intensive cardiac care unit levels, data on the admission diagnoses were gathered from consecutive patients who were admitted during a two-day period. Admission policies were evaluated by comparing illness severity with the intensive cardiac care unit level. Gross national income was used to differentiate high-income countries (n=13) from middle-income countries…

The Expansion of English-medium Instruction in the Nordic Countries. Can Top-Down University Language Polices Encourage Bottom-up Disciplinary Literac…

2015

Recently, in the wake of the Bologna Declaration and similar internationalinitiatives, there has been a rapid increase in the number of university courses and programmestaught through the medium of English. Surveys have consistently shown theNordic countries to be at the forefront of this trend towards English-medium instruction(EMI). In this paper, we discuss the introduction of EMI in four Nordic countries (Denmark,Finland, Norway and Sweden). We present the educational setting and the EMIdebate in each of these countries and summarize relevant research findings. We then makesome tentative suggestions for the introduction of EMI in higher education in othercountries. In particular, we are…
