Gestational surrogacy: Psychosocial aspects

2016

ABSTRACT Innovation in assisted reproductive technologies together with increased infertility and new family structures are increasing the use of gestational surrogacy as a means to have children. Before, during and after the process, it is necessary to study the psychosocial characteristics of triad members: the gestational surrogate, intended parents, and offspring. Research has indicated positive adaptation to the process and benefits for all members of the triad. Altruism is the main motivation of surrogates. Notably, psychological well-being has been found to be higher in individuals who have become parents through surrogacy than in those who have used egg donation or have followed a n…

Tejuelo. Didáctica de la lengua y la literatura. Educación

2021

Visualization of a covalent intermediate between microsomal epoxide hydrolase, but not cholesterol epoxide hydrolase, and their substrates

1997

Mammalian soluble and microsomal epoxide hydrolases have been proposed to belong to the family of alpha/beta-hydrolase-fold enzymes. These enzymes hydrolyse their substrates by a catalytic triad, with the first step of the enzymatic reaction being the formation of a covalent enzyme-substrate ester. In the present paper, we describe the direct visualization of the ester formation between rat microsomal epoxide hydrolase and its substrate. Microsomal epoxide hydrolase was precipitated with acetone after brief incubation with [1-(14)C]epoxystearic acid. After denaturing SDS gel electrophoresis the protein-bound radioactivity was detected by fluorography. Pure epoxide hydrolase and crude micros…

International Olympic Committee (IOC) Consensus Statement on Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S): 2018 Update

2018

In 2014, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) published a consensus statement entitled “Beyond the Female Athlete Triad: Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S)”. The syndrome of RED-S refers to: “impaired physiological functioning caused by relative energy deficiency, and includes but is not limited to impairments of metabolic rate, menstrual function, bone health, immunity, protein synthesis, and cardiovascular health.”

Distant Homology Modeling of LCAT and Its Validation through In Silico Targeting and In Vitro and In Vivo Assays

2013

LCAT (lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase) catalyzes the transacylation of a fatty acid of lecithin to cholesterol, generating a cholesteryl ester and lysolecithin. The knowledge of LCAT atomic structure and the identification of the amino acids relevant in controlling its structure and function are expected to be very helpful to understand the enzyme catalytic mechanism, as involved in HDL cholesterol metabolism. However - after an early report in the late '90 s - no recent advance has been made about LCAT three-dimensional structure. In this paper, we propose an LCAT atomistic model, built following the most up-to-date molecular modeling approaches, and exploiting newly solved crystallog…

When tubules aggregate

2011

Within muscle fibres, tubules appear as microtubules, transverse tubules, and different components of the sarcotubular system, the latter consisting of longitudinal tubules and lateral or terminal sacs which, at special junctional connections, are situated on both sides of transverse tubules forming triads. Pathological structures related to the transverse tubules are honeycomb structures, both the transverse tubules and the honeycomb ones being labelled by extracellularly applied lanthanum [1] or potassium ferrocyanide [2], thus, indicating an open connection between the interior of the muscle fibres and the extracellular space. Dyads or multiple incomplete or complete forms of triads, pen…

Low Energy Availability is Difficult to Assess But Outcomes Have Large Impact on Bone Injury Rates in Elite Distance Athletes

2018

We aimed to (a) report energy availability (EA), metabolic/reproductive function, bone mineral density, and injury/illness rates in national/world-class female and male distance athletes and (b) investigate the robustness of various diagnostic criteria from the Female Athlete Triad (Triad), Low Energy Availability in Females Questionnaire, and relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S) tools to identify risks associated with low EA. Athletes were distinguished according to benchmarks of reproductive function (amenorrheic [n = 13] vs. eumenorrheic [n = 22], low [lowest quartile of reference range; n = 10] versus normal testosterone [n = 14]), and EA calculated from 7-day food and training d…

Asp333, Asp495, and His52.3 Form the Catalytic Triad of Rat Soluble Epoxide Hydrolase

1996

On the basis of the sequence similarity between mammalian epoxide hydrolases and bacterial haloalkane dehalogenase reported earlier (Arand, M., Grant, D. F., Beetham, J. K., Friedberg, T., Oesch, F., and Hammock, B. D. (1994) FEBS Lett. 338, 251-256; Beetham, J. K., Grant, D., Arand, M., Garbarino, J., Kiyosue, T., Pinot, F., Oesch, F., Belknap, W. R., Shinozaki, K., and hammock, B. D. (1995) DNA Cell. Biol. 14, 61-71) we selected candidate amino acid residues for the putative catalytic triad of the rat soluble epoxide hydrolase. The predicted amino acid residues were exchanged by site-directed mutagenesis of the epoxide hydrolase cDNA, followed by the expression of the respective mutant en…

Iepazīšanās portāla lietošanas motīvi un personības tumšā triāde

2020
