Cumulative doses analysis in young trauma patients: a single-centre experience

2015

Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) represents the main source of radiation expo- sure in trauma patients. The radiation exposure of young patients is a matter of considerable medical concern due to possible long-term effects. Multiple MDCT stud- ies have been observed in the young trauma population with an increase in radiation exposure. We have identi- fied 249 young adult patients (178 men and 71 women; age range 14-40 years) who had received more than one MDCT study between June 2010 and June 2014. According to the International Commission on Radio- logical Protection publication, we have calculated the cumulative organ dose tissue-weighting factors by using CT-EXPO software ® . We…

A minor modification of Lichtenstein repair of primary inguinal hernia: postoperative discomfort evaluation.

2010

The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of a modification of the Lichtenstein hernioplasty procedure by evaluating its impact on postoperative discomfort. From December 1999 to May 2006, the Lichtenstein inguinal hernioplasty was performed in 406 patients with noncomplicated unilateral inguinal hernia. During reconstruction, the mesh was fixed to the inguinal canal floor without stitching its upper margin to the internal oblique muscle. Control of postoperative pain proved to be satisfactory; 72 hours after surgery, 26.1 per cent of patients no longer felt any pain, whereas 54.4 per cent had slight pain without the need for painkillers; on Day 7, 92.8 per cent felt no pain at …

Study of neurinomas with ultrasound contrast media: review of a case series to identify characteristic imaging patterns

2011

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether there exists a characteristic distribution pattern of vessels within neurinomas that may be used to characterise this type of lesion by employing a contrast-specific ultrasound technique.Between January 2003 and May 2010, 66 suspected neurinomas were evaluated according to their sonographic features (solid fusiform mass with well-defined margins located in direct continuity with the nerve that was not always discernible and heterogeneous as a result of the presence of small cystic areas or calcifications). The lesions were examined using a sonographic contrast medium consisting of sulphur hexafluoride microbubbles and equipment with dedicated co…

Rome consensus conference - statement; human papilloma virus diseases in males

2013

Background Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a very resistant, ubiquitous virus that can survive in the environment without a host. The decision to analyse HPV-related diseases in males was due to the broad dissemination of the virus, and, above all, by the need to stress the importance of primary and secondary prevention measures (currently available for women exclusively). The objective of the Consensus Conference was to make evidence-based recommendations that were designed to facilitate the adoption of a standard approach in clinical practice in Italy. Methods The Sponsoring Panel put a series of questions to the members of the Scientific Committee who prepared a summary of the currently av…

Perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis in plastic surgery: A prospective study of 1100 adult patients.

2011

Summary Background Although guidelines for antibiotic prophylaxis to prevent surgical site infections (SSIs) exist, specific guidelines for plastic surgery are missing and there is a tendency towards excessive administration of antibiotics. A total of 1100 patients were prospectively studied according to an evidence-based protocol to investigate if limiting antibiotic prophylaxis to high-risk cases does increase the infection rate. Methods Between April 2009 and April 2010, 1100 consecutive patients undergoing elective reconstructive or cosmetic procedures were enrolled. Procedures were classified into four groups, and prophylactic antibiotics were only administered perioperatively in 23.4%…

Left ventricular mass in hypertensive patients with mild-to-moderate reduction of renal function

2010

Aim: Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is an independent predictor of cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between LV mass and mild-to-moderate renal dysfunction in a group of non-diabetic hypertensives, free of CV diseases, participating in the Renal Dysfunction in Hypertension (REDHY) study. Methods: Patients with diabetes, a body mass index (BMI) of more than 35 kg/m 2 , secondary hypertension, CV diseases and a glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of less than 30 mL/min per 1.73 m 2 were excluded. The final sample included 455 patients, who underwent echocardiographic examination and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring.…

Relationships between metabolic syndrome and left ventricular mass in hypertensive patients. Does sex matter ?

2008

Several studies documented an association between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy. However, only in a few of these studies the impact of MetS on left ventricular mass (LVM) was separately analysed by gender, with conflicting results. The aim of our study was to verify, in a wide sample of essential hypertensive patients, the influence of gender, if any, on the relationship between MetS and LVM. We enrolled 475 non-diabetic subjects (mean age: 46 +/- 11 years), with mild-to-moderate essential hypertension, of whom 40% had MetS, defined on the basis of Adult Treatment Panel III (ATPIII) criteria. All the patients underwent a 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monit…

Two-stage multi-Gaussian fitting of conduit artery photoplethysmography waveform during induced unilateral hemodynamic events.

2014

Photoplethysmography (PPG) is an optical technique with high diagnostic potential, yet clinical applications remain underdeveloped. Standardization of signal recording and quantification of waveform are essential prerequisites for broader clinical use. The aim of this study was to utilize a two-stage multi-Gaussian fitting technique in order to examine the parameters of conduit artery PPG waveform recorded during increasing the unilateral regional vascular resistance (RVR). This study was conducted on 14 young and healthy volunteers; various external compressions (ECs) were performed by inflating a tight cuff at 0, 40, 80, and 200 mmHg, while registering femoral PPG (wavelength 880 nm), dia…

Comparative study of neurocognitive function in euthymic bipolar patients and stabilized schizophrenic patients.

2009

Few studies have compared neurocognitive performance in euthymic patients with bipolar disorder (BD), stabilized patients with schizophrenia (SC) and normal controls (NC) using a comprehensive neuropsychological battery, and those that have been conducted have yielded discrepant results. We evaluated the neurocognitive profile shown by 73 euthymic patients with BD, 89 stabilized patients with SC and 67 NC. All participants completed a cognitive battery in which the domains evaluated were executive functioning, sustained attention, and verbal and visual memory. Individuals with BD were administered the Quality of Life Scale (QLS). Patients with BD manifested dysfunction in executive function…
