Grey matter damage and overall cognitive impairment in primary progressive multiple sclerosis

2011

Objectives: To identify associations between cognitive impairment and imaging measures in a cross-sectional study of patients with primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS). Methods: Neuropsychological tests were administered to 27 patients with PPMS and 31 controls. Patients underwent brain conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences, volumetric scans and magnetization transfer (MT) imaging; MT ratio (MTR) parameters, grey matter (GM) and normal-appearing white matter (NAWM) volumes, and WM T2 lesion load (T2LL) were obtained. In patients, multiple linear regression models identified the imaging measure associated with the abnormal cognitive tests independently from the ot…

Three-year (2014-2016) activity report of the Replantation Service for hand amputations in Poland

2018

W pracy przedstawiono podsumowanie 32 miesięcy działalności Serwisu Replantacyjnego dla amputacji rąk w Polsce od stycznia 2014 roku do sierpnia 2016 roku. W analizowanym czasie zgłoszono łącznie 568 przypadków – amputacji, częściowych amputacji i innych rozległych urazów kończyn górnych, z czego zaakceptowano 354 przypadki (62%), a odrzucono 214 (38%). Wśród 354 wszystkich zaakceptowanych przypadków znalazło się 167 całkowitych amputacji (47%), 142 amputacji niecałkowitych (40%) i 45 (13%) innych ciężkich urazów, które zagrażały utratą kończyny. W większości ofiarami byli mężczyźni o średniej wieku 39 lat. Najwięcej pacjentów przeszło amputacje kilku palców i kciuków – łącznie 229 (65%) os…

Unique sleep-stage transitions determined by obstructive sleep apnea severity, age and gender

2019

In obstructive sleep apnea, patients' sleep is fragmented leading to excessive daytime sleepiness and co-morbidities like arterial hypertension. However, traditional metrics are not always directly correlated with daytime sleepiness, and the association between traditional sleep quality metrics like sleep duration and arterial hypertension is still ambiguous. In a development cohort, we analysed hypnograms from mild (n = 213), moderate (n = 235) and severe (n = 277) obstructive sleep apnea patients as well as healthy controls (n = 105) from the European Sleep Apnea Database. We assessed sleep by the analysis of two-step transitions depending on obstructive sleep apnea severity and anthropom…

Morphologic diagnosis in neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis.

1997

Morphologic pathology in NCL is marked by two processes, the interaction of which has not yet been completely clarified: 1) degeneration of nerve cells, foremost in the cerebral cortex, resulting in considerable cerebral atrophy in early childhood forms, likely responsible for clinical and neuroradiological findings; 2) widespread accumulation of autofluorescent lysosomal lipopigments of varying ultrastructure, the demonstration of which is still largely responsible for diagnostic recognition of an individual patient's NCL. Numerous tissues and organs are available for biopsy, among them brain (historical), rectum (still favoured by some), skeletal muscle and peripheral nerves (largely by c…

Quality of life in long-term breast cancer survivors - a 10-year longitudinal population-based study.

2013

Breast cancer survivors may experience adverse effects of cancer and/or treatment years after completion of therapy, which can considerably decrease quality of life (QoL). Little is known about the time course of QoL in breast cancer survivors beyond the fifth year post-diagnosis, when routine follow-up care has usually terminated. We therefore explored in detail whether and to what extent restrictions in breast cancer survivors persist and whether changes or aggravations in QoL occurred over time.QoL was assessed 1, 3, 5, and 10 years post-diagnosis in a population-based cohort of initially 387 female breast cancer patients from Saarland (Germany), using the EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-BR23. Tim…

How to predict a high rate of inappropriateness for upper endoscopy in an endoscopic centre?

2010

Abstract BACKGROUND: Inappropriateness of upper endoscopy (EGD) indication causes decreased diagnostic yield. Our aim of was to identify predictors of appropriateness rate for EGD among endoscopic centres. METHODS: A post-hoc analysis of two multicentre cross-sectional studies, including 6270 and 8252 patients consecutively referred to EGD in 44 (group A) and 55 (group B) endoscopic Italian centres in 2003 and 2007, respectively, was performed. A multiple forward stepwise regression was applied to group A, and independently validated in group B. A <70% threshold was adopted to define inadequate appropriateness rate clustered by centre. RESULTS: discrete variability of clustered appropriaten…

Analysis of Fifty-Six Cochlear Implant Device Failures

2008

Objective: Our aim was to present a failure analysis after cochlear implant revision surgery in a large series of children and adults and to assess the outcome and audiologic performance. Methods: Fifty-six cochlear implant failures that occurred in 422 devices implanted between 1990 and 2007 at the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Mainz, Germany, were retrospectively analyzed. The causes of failure were reviewed evaluating the individual history, telemetric and intraoperative findings and manufacturer’s investigation reports. Results: We performed 56 surgical revisions in a series of 422 consec…

Are under- and overweight female elite athletes thin and fat? A controlled study.

2012

Purpose: The studys purpose was to relate body mass index (BMI) to body fat percentage as measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry in female elite athletes from different sports and nonathletic controls and to investigate what characterizes the athletes with unhealthy low and high body fat values. Methods: This study was conducted in three phases: 1) screening with a detailed questionnaire, 2) body composition measurement (dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry), and 3) clinical interview. All female elite athletes representing national teams at the junior or senior level age 1339 yr (n = 938) and an age groupmatched randomly selected population-based control group (n = 900) were invited t…

Survival of cervical cancer patients in Germany in the early 21st century: A period analysis by age, histology, and stage

2012

Background: Population-based studies on endometrial cancer providing survival estimates by age, histology, and stage have been sparse. We aimed to derive most up-to-date and detailed survival estimates for endometrial cancer patients in Germany. Methods: We used a pooled German national dataset including data from 11 cancer registries covering a population of 33 million people. 30,906 patients diagnosed with endometrial cancer in 1997-2006 were included. Period analysis was performed to calculate 5-year relative survival (RS) in 2002-2006. Trends in survival between 2002 and 2006 were examined using model-based period analysis. Age-adjustment was performed using five age groups (15-44, 45-5…

Maternal and Neonatal Characteristics for Late Foetal Death in Latvia between 2001 and 2014: Population-Based Study

2018

Introduction. Stillbirth is one of the most common adverse pregnancy outcomes worldwide. Late foetal death (LFD) rates are mostly used for international comparisons because of the large variations in stillbirth rates between countries. Objective. To examine trends in LFD (including antepartum and intrapartum) by multiple births, birth weight, and maternal age in two time periods. Methods. A retrospective cohort study was used to analyse data from the Medical Birth Register (2001–2014), divided into 2 periods of 7 years each. In total, data on 1,340 singletons were analysed. This study calculated LFD rates and rate ratios (RR). Results. The overall LFD rate showed a slight statistically sign…
