Predicted and actual fetal weight throughout the last trimester.
1997
The aim of our study was to obtain, in normal pregnancies, references values of predicted and actual fetal weight for both male and female fetuses and for fetuses born to nulliparous and multiparous women between weeks 28 and 41 of gestation. Predicted fetal weight curves represented calculations of weight in the third trimester based on weight data obtained during the second trimester. These curves were obtained from 134 ultrasonograms obtained between weeks 20 and 27. Actual fetal weight curves represented the values calculated from third trimester measurements and were based on 374 ultrasonograms obtained between weeks 28 and 41. For predicted fetal weight minor differences were found be…
Effects of REM sleep awakenings and related wakening paradigms on the ultradian sleep cycle and the symptoms in depression.
2002
In 1975 Vogel and coworkers published their classical study where they compared selective rapid eye movement (REM) sleep deprivation by brief awakenings to a control intervention paradigm in depressed patients. The superior antidepressive impact of the first procedure was attributed to the REM pressure accumulating during the treatment period. The laborious procedure and the considerable effort necessary to evaluate the sleep profiles in real time have prevented similar experiments so far. Based on artificial neural networks we developed a software for the real time detection of REM sleep. In combination with an alarm system the algorithm allowed us to wake up subjects automatically and to …
Examination and treatment of sleep-related painful erections--a case report.
1989
The case of a patient with sleep-related painful erections is described. Insomnia and a slight depressive syndrome occurred along with a long history of this disorder. No physical abnormality was found. At a baseline recording of sleep electroencephalography (EEG) and nocturnal penile tumescence (NPT), a disturbed sleep pattern and impaired NPT were recorded. Attempts to treat the disorder with diazepam, amitriptyline, trimipramine, and biperidene did not prompt a stable improvement of the disorder, but a dosage of 25 mg clozapine was sufficient to achieve normalized sleep architecture, remission of the depressive symptomatology, and normalization of NPT. It is likely that marked sedation i…
Female overweight is not associated with a higher embryo euploidy rate in first trimester miscarriages karyotyped by hysteroembryoscopy.
2011
Overweight women (body mass index ≥ 25 kg/m(2)) present an embryo euploidy rate in first trimester miscarriages similar to normoweight controls after a selective biopsy and karyotyping of embryo and/or chorion samples taken by hysteroembryoscopy.
Smoking Habits, Nicotine Use, and Congenital Malformations
2006
OBJECTIVE: We examined whether maternal smoking and use of nicotine substitutes during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy increased the prevalence of congenital malformations in general and of certain congenital malformations in particular. METHODS: In the Danish National Birth Cohort (1997– 2003) we identified 76,768 pregnancies (and their subsequent singleton births); 20,603 were exposed to tobacco smoking during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Birth outcomes were collected by linkage to the Central Population Register, the National Patients Register, and the National Birth Register. We identified congenital malformations from the Hospital Medical Birth Registry as they were recorded at bir…
Prospective sonographic detection of spina bifida at 11–14 weeks and systematic literature review
2015
Objective: To conduct a literature review to assess the effectiveness of first trimester ultrasonographic markers of spina bifida (SB) integrating data with our prospective experience. Methods: The analysis of the SB cases that we prospectively detected in the first trimester, between January 2012 and February 2014, and a systematic review of all the papers evaluating the effectiveness of SB ultrasonographic markers at 11–14 weeks, namely brain stem diameter (BS), fourth ventricle/intracranial translucency (IT), cisterna magna (CM), brain stem/occipital bone distance (BSOB), the ratio between BS and BSOB. Some studies assess only the effectiveness of IT, others include more parameters, and …
Ramadan fasting and newborn's birth weight in pregnant Muslim women in The Netherlands.
2014
Many Muslim women worldwide are pregnant during Ramadan and adhere to Ramadan fasting during pregnancy. In the present study, we determined whether maternal adherence to Ramadan fasting during pregnancy has an impact on the birth weight of the newborn, and whether the effects differed according to trimester in which Ramadan fasting took place. A prospective cohort study was conducted in 130 pregnant Muslim women who attended antenatal care in Amsterdam and Zaanstad, The Netherlands. Data on adherence to Ramadan fasting during pregnancy and demographics were self-reported by pregnant women, and the outcome of the newborn was retrieved from medical records after delivery. The results showed t…
Interferon-beta exposure during first trimester is safe in women with multiple sclerosis-A prospective cohort study from the German Multiple Sclerosi…
2015
Background: Available data suggest that pregnancy exposure to interferon-beta might result in lower mean birth weight and preterm birth. Objective: To determine the effect of interferon-beta exposure during pregnancy on pregnancy outcomes in multiple sclerosis patients. Methods: We compared the pregnancy outcomes of women exposed to interferon-beta with pregnancies unexposed to disease-modifying therapies. Women were enrolled into the German Multiple Sclerosis and Pregnancy Registry. A standardized questionnaire was administered during pregnancy and postpartum. Detailed information on course of multiple sclerosis and pregnancy, concomitant medications, delivery, and outcome of pregnancy was…
Reference Ranges and Distribution of Placental Volume by 3-Dimensional Virtual Organ Computer-Aided Analysis Between 11 Weeks and 13 Weeks 6 Days
2013
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility, reproducibility, and distribution of placental volume measurements according to the crown-rump length between 11 weeks and 13 weeks 6 days. METHODS Images were acquired in 128 pregnancies followed in Burgundy during first-trimester screening sonography using an abdominal 3-dimensional transducer. The placental volume was then calculated by the virtual organ computer-aided analysis method with a rotation angle of 30° by a single operator. RESULTS Placental volumes ranged from 33.3 to 107.6 cm(3) with a mean ± SD of 62.3 ± 14.8 cm(3); the 5th and 10th percentiles were 38.0 and 44.20 cm(3), respectively, whereas the 90th an…
