How do tropical temperate troughs form and develop over southern Africa?
2014
16 pages ; Corrigendum Figure (Macron C, B Pohl, Y Richard & M Bessafi (2014) CORRIGENDUM. Journal of Climate, 27, 5198-5199. doi:10.1175/JCLI-D-14-00319.1); International audience; This paper aims at separating the respective influences of tropical and midlatitude variability on the development and life cycle of tropical temperate troughs (TTTs) over southern Africa in austral summer (November-February). Cluster analysis is applied to 1971-2000 40-yr ECMWF Re-Analysis (ERA-40) daily outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) anomalies to identify TTTs and monitor tropical convection. The same analysis applied to the zonal wind stretching deformation at 200 hPa (ZDEF) characterizes midlatitude trans…
Timing and patterns of the ENSO signal in Africa over the last 30 years: insights from normalized difference vegetation index data.
2014
Abstract A more complete picture of the timing and patterns of the ENSO signal during the seasonal cycle for the whole of Africa over the three last decades is provided using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). Indeed, NDVI has a higher spatial resolution and is more frequently updated than in situ climate databases, and highlights the impact of ENSO on vegetation dynamics as a combined result of ENSO on rainfall, solar radiation, and temperature. The month-by-month NDVI–Niño-3.4 correlation patterns evolve as follows. From July to September, negative correlations are observed over the Sahel, the Gulf of Guinea coast, and regions from the northern Democratic Republic of Congo…
A DFT study of the polar Diels–Alder reaction between 4-aza-6-nitrobenzofuroxan and cyclopentadiene
2005
Abstract The polar Diels–Alder reaction between 4-aza-6-nitrobenzofuroxan (ANBF) and cyclopentadiene has been studied using DFT procedures at the B3LYP/6-31G* level. Only one highly asynchronous transition state structure associated to the formation of the [4+2] adduct 13 is found. A further [3,3] sigmatropic shift on the [4+2] cycloadduct 13 allows its conversion into the thermodynamically more stable [2+4] cycloadduct 14 . The analysis of the global and local electrophilicities of the reagents correctly explain the behaviour of ANBF as a strong electrophile in polar cycloadditions.
Insurance mechanisms for tropical cyclones and droughts in Pacific Small Island Developing States
2016
One group of locations significantly affected by climate-related losses and damage is the Small Island Developing States (SIDS). One mechanism aiming to reduce such adverse impacts is insurance, with a wide variety of products and models available. Insurance for climate-related hazards affecting Pacific SIDS has not been investigated in detail. This article contributes to filling this gap by exploring how insurance mechanisms might be implemented in the Pacific SIDS for tropical cyclones and droughts. The study examines opportunities and constraints or limitations of some existing insurance mechanisms and programmes as applied to the Pacific SIDS. Eight insurance mechanisms are compared and…
Functional Classification and Response to Psychotropic Drugs
1990
Psychopathologically defined diagnoses represent guidelines for the application of drugs and serve as selection criteria for the evaluation of potentially useful psychopharmacological agents. Therefore, the success of research in drug evaluation strongly depends on the conceptual frameworks of diagnostic classification and how these change. For instance, at the beginning of the era of antidepressants 30 years ago, the efficacy of antidepressants was thought to be restricted to patients with endogenous depression, but since then their therapeutic spectrum has broadened: first to the “depressive syndrome” and then, due to the growing acceptance of DSM-III, to the major depressive episode. Now…
Numerical Front Propagation Using Kinematical Conservation Laws
2011
We use the newly formulated three-dimensional (3-D) kinematical conservation laws (KCL) to study the propagation of a nonlinear wavefront in a polytropic gas in a uniform state at rest. The 3-D KCL forms an under-determined system of six conservation laws with three involutive constraints, to which we add the energy conservation equation of a weakly nonlinear ray theory. The resulting system of seven conservation laws is only weakly hyperbolic and therefore poses a real challenge in the numerical approximation. We implement a central finite volume scheme with a constrained transport technique for the numerical solution of the system of conservation laws. The results of a numerical experimen…

Molecular cloning of the RPS0 gene from Candida tropicalis.
2001
The Saccharomyces cerevisiae RPS0 A and B genes encode proteins essential for maturation of the 40S ribosomal subunit precursors. We have isolated a homologue of the RPS0 gene from Candida tropicalis, which we named CtRPS0. The C. tropicalisRPS0 encodes a protein of 261 amino acid residues with a predicted molecular weight of 28.65 kDa and an isoelectric point of 4.79. CtRps0p displays significant amino acid sequence homology with Rps0p from C. albicans, S. cerevisiae, Neurospora crassa, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, Pneumocystis carinii and higher organisms, such as human, mouse and rat. CtRPS0 on a high copy number vector can complement the lethal phenotype linked to the disruption of both R…
Malaria resurgence risk in southern Europe: climate assessment in an historically endemic area of rice fields at the Mediterranean shore of Spain
2010
Abstract Background International travel and immigration have been related with an increase of imported malaria cases. This fact and climate change, prolonging the period favouring vector development, require an analysis of the malaria transmission resurgence risk in areas of southern Europe. Such a study is made for the first time in Spain. The Ebro Delta historically endemic area was selected due to its rice field landscape, the presence of only one vector, Anopheles atroparvus, with densities similar to those it presented when malaria was present, in a situation which pronouncedly differs from already assessed potential resurgence areas in other Mediterranean countries, such as France an…
Spatio-Temporal Modeling of Zika and Dengue Infections within Colombia
2018
The aim of this study is to estimate the parallel relative risk of Zika virus disease (ZVD) and dengue using spatio-temporal interaction effects models for one department and one city of Colombia during the 2015&ndash
