Liquid crystalline polymers and elastomers

2002

The results of experiments and theory correlate increasingly well in the investigation of liquid crystalline polymers. Current work focuses on rheology and the behavior of blends of thermotropic LC polymers, due to reemerging economic interest in these materials. Research on liquid crystalline elastomers concentrates on potential applications such as artificial muscles and lasing.

Freely-Suspended and Transferred Freely-Suspended Films of Polymeric Liquid Crystals

1993

Freely-suspended (FS) liquid-crystal (LC) films of a polymethylsiloxane homo- and a copolymer with different mesogenic side groups have been prepared and investigated. For both substances the preparation of the films succeeded only in the isotropic phase but the higher ordered phases were reached after cooling. The films of the homopolymer have only been obtained with thicknesses estimated to be in the pm-range and with an unusual “Book-Shelf” orientation of the smectic layers. In contrast, the films of the copolymer were thinner and showed a homeotropic orientation of the mesogens in the smectic A phase. Interestingly, this material exhibited a different layer spacing in film and bulk, alt…

Self-organization of substituted azacrowns based on their discoid and amphiphilic nature

1989

Abstract Cyclame and hexacyclene derivatives, bearing four and six long-chain substituents respectively, were synthesized. They are discussed as monolayer-forming amphiphiles as well as liquid-crystalline-phase-forming thermotropic mesogens. The compounds investigated form ordered monolayers at the gas/water interface. In the monolayer the hydrophilic cyclic head group lies flat on the water surface, whereas the hydrophobic substituents are oriented perpendicularly with respect to the interface. Most derivatives fitted with aromatic substituents exhibit a solid condensed state exclusively. In contrast with this, solid condensed as well as expanded phases can be found when spreading the alip…

Flexible Synthesis of Planar Chiral Azoninones and Optically Active Indolizidinones

2014

The flexible synthesis of defined substituted optically active indolizidinones starting from chiral pool (S)-proline and trans 4-hydroxy-(S)-proline is described. Several defined 2-vinylpyrrolidines were generated in short sequences. The aza-Claisen rearrangement using chloro and phenylketene equivalents delivered nine-membered-ring lactams with up to three stereogenic centres and pS-arranged E olefins. Depending on the substitution pattern, certain azoninones had a flexible conformation and showed pS/pR double-bond flipping. Treatment of the unsaturated lactams with the soft electrophile iodine induced diastereoselective transannular ring contractions. Here, the planar chiral arrangement o…

Supramolecular Thermotropic Liquid Crystalline Materials with Nematic Mesophase Based on Methylated Hyperbranched Polyethylenimine and Mesogenic Carb…

2006

Supramolecular interaction of fully methylated hyperbranched polyethylenimines (PEI) with a mesogen-based carboxylic acid, 5-(p-cyanobiphenoxy)pentanoic acid, results in the formation of supramolecular complexes exhibiting thermotropic liquid crystalline (LC) mesophases. In contrast to the common smectic mesophases of most dendritic LC polymers, nematic LC phase were observed. The complexation of PEI and the mesogen units is due to electrostatic interaction between the carboxylate groups and the ammonium end groups of PEI. LC properties were investigated by a combination of differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing light optical microscopy, and X-ray diffractometry.

Mesogen-Initiated Linear Polyglycerol Isomers: The Ordering Effect of a Single Cholesterol Unit on “Sticky” Isotropic Chains

2011

Synthesis, thermal properties, and the liquid crystalline (LC) order of polymers consisting of a single mesogenic cholesterol unit and flexible, linear polyglycerol (PG) or poly(glyceryl glycerol) (PGG) chains have been investigated. Incorporation of the single mesogen has been achieved by using cholesterol directly as an initiator for the oxyanionic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of ethoxyethyl glycidyl ether (EEGE) or isopropylidene glyceryl glycidyl ether (IGG). The controlled polymerization allowed the synthesis of a series of peculiar rod–coil type polyethers with molecular weights of 600–2300 g/mol, representing a degree of polymerization (DPn) of 4–30 for both PG and PGG with the …

Effects of ions on water structure: a low-field1HT1NMR relaxometry approach

2014

Aqueous salt solutions play an important role in nature because of their effects on environmental biogeochemical processes and on structural properties of biomolecules. Upon dissolution, salts split in ions that are solvated. Water in hydration shells is subjected to molecular motions that can be monitored by (1)H T1 NMR relaxometry. This technique allowed the evaluation of the nature of the interactions between water and ions via variable temperature experiments. Examination of relaxometry properties of aqueous solutions at variable salt concentrations allowed acknowledgement of the role played by ions in either structuring or destructuring water aggregates. A mathematical model has been a…

Monolayers of Bolaform Amphiphiles: Influence of Alkyl Chain Length and Counterions

1994

We have prepared self-assembled monolayers of novel cationic bolaform amphiphiles on negatively charged substrates. Most of these amphiphiles form smooth, defect-free monolayers which can be used to reverse the substrate surface charge and thus allow subsequent adsorption of anionic molecules and construction of multilayers. Atomic force microscopy, surface force measurement, and surface plasmon spectroscopy were combined to probe the molecular orientation and ordering, mechanical properties, and surface electrical properties of the monolayers. In addition, the amphiphile aggregation behavior at an air-water interface was studied by surface tension measurement, and lyotropic phase behavior …

Thermomechanical Properties of Radiation-Modified Polyethylene/Ethylene-Propylene-Diene Copolymer/Liquid-Crystalline Copolyester Blends

1999

Radiation-modified blends of high-density polyethylene (PE) with ethylene-propylene-diene copolymer (EPDM; 10-65 wt.%) and thermotropic liquid-crystalline polymer (LCP; 10 wt.%) were investigated. The LCP was a liquid-crystalline copolyester of 40% poly(ethylene terephthalate) with 60% 4-hydroxybenzoic acid. The constituents were blended using a circular extruder, the specimens were prepared by compression molding and irradiated by 60Co γ-radiation up to 200 kGy. Mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties in wide temperature range were investigated for the irradiated and non-irradiated specimens. The effects of irradiation on the thermomechanical behaviour of the PE matrix are discus…

Ring Expansion of 1,2,3,4-Tetrahydroisoquinolines to Dibenzo[c,f]azonines. An Unexpected [1,4]-Sigmatropic Rearrangement of Nitrile-Stabilized Ammoni…

2014

When the products of a Strecker reaction of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolines with aromatic aldehydes are quaternized with alkyl triflates and subsequently treated with base, a ring expansion to 6,7,8,13-tetrahydro-5H-dibenzo[c,f]azonine-5-carbonitriles takes place. The nine-membered cyclic products can be obtained in good yields (78-89%) in a process involving the [1,4]-sigmatropic rearrangement of a nitrile-stabilized ammonium ylide. The reaction sequence provides a new, simple, and efficient method for the synthesis of these unusual N-heterocycles.
