The impact of a recently proposed HNO3-forming channel of the HO2 + NO reaction on atmospheric ozone, methane and their precursors is assessed with the aim to investigate its effects on aviation NOx induced radiative forcing. The first part of the study addresses the differences in stratospheric and tropospheric HOx-NOx chemistry in general, by comparing a global climate simulation without the above reaction to two simulations with different rate coefficient parameterizations for HO2 + NO → HNO3. For any meteorological effects of radiation, only those constituents of the air which have a very strong absorption in the infra-red are involved; these are water vapour and carbon dioxide. Several methods have been developed (Mügge & Möller 1932 a, b ; Elsasser 1942; Yamamoto 1952) for computing the radiation flux, and numerous calculations of these fluxes and of the cooling rates have been performed in the last 25 years (Ludwig 1935; Kortiim 1939; Thompson & Neiburger 1955). Sulfate is among the major components of atmospheric aerosols or fine particulate matters. Aerosols loaded with sulfate result in low air quality, damage to ecosystems, and influences on climate change. Sulfate aerosols could originate from that directly emitted to the atmosphere and that produced by atmospheric physicochemical processes. Abstract The aim of this work is to quantify the sensitivity of shortwave radiative fluxes to changes in the vertical distribution of aerosol absorption, taken into account through the aerosol Single Scattering Albedo (SSA). The case study represents a real atmospheric situation with a desert dust layer (DDL) in the mid troposphere over an urban Boundary Layer (BL) observed at Rome on 20 June 2007. A moderately high aerosol optical depth (AOD), 0.292 at 550 nm, and low Angstrom exponent of 0.30 were measured. The measurements were performed using a combination of a Forward Scattering Spectrometer Probe (FSSP-100) and a Cloud Imaging Probe (CIP), which were installed on the Russian high altitude research aircraft M55 "Geophysica" during the SCOUT-O3 campaign in Darwin, Australia. Whereas the impact of ENSO on the African summer rainfall regions is largely documented and still regularly investigated, little is known about its impact on the winter rainfall regions located at the southwestern and northwestern tips of Africa. Yet, these regions are densely inhabited and are net exporters of high-quality agricultural products. Here we analyze the relationship between El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and South Africa austral winter rainfall using a 682 raingauges daily rainfall database documenting the period 1950–1999. Abstract Measurements of a convective storm cluster in the northern Black Forest in southwest Germany have revealed the development of a warm and dry downdraft under its anvil cloud that had an inhibiting effect on the subsequent development of convection. These measurements were made on 12 July 2006 as part of the field campaign Prediction, Identification and Tracking of Convective Cells (PRINCE) during which a number of new measurement strategies were deployed.
