THE SMALL PROTEIN SCO2038 CONTROLS TRYPTOPHAN BIOSYNTHESIS AND DIFFERENTIATION IN STREPTOMYCES COELICOLOR
The cellular regulatory factors comprise regulatory proteins, small RNA and small proteins. It is known that the product of small orfs (smorfs) can regulate the translation of downstream elements and also can encode functional peptides involved in the regulation of specific pathways (Ladoukakis E. et al.,2011). In particular, in the model streptomycete Sfreptomyces coelicolor, smorfs (about 100-300 nucleotides) were identified in some amino acid biosynthetic gene clusters such as in the tryptophan trpCXBA locus (Limauro D. et al., I 990; Hu DS. et al., 1999). In S. coelicolor the molecular mechanisms that regulate tryptophan (Trp) biosynthesis are poorly understood and, unlike the trp opero…
Sepiapterin reductase in cultured human cells.
1987
Sepiapterin reductase, an enzyme involved in the synthesis of tetrahydrobiopterin (the natural cofactor for phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan hydroxylases), has been assayed in cultured human amniotic fibroblasts and in cultured mononuclear blood cells. In both cases, the Michaelis constants for sepiapterin and NADPH were essentially equal; 20 microM and 6 microM respectively for stimulated mononuclear blood cells and 22 microM and 5 microM respectively for amniotic fibroblasts. The inhibition by N-acetylserotonin was also similar in both cases. The concentration that produced 50% inhibition in stimulated mononuclear blood cells and in amniotic fibroblasts was 2 microM. The results str…
Interactions of tryptophan and serotonin with biomembrane models: Binding to reversed micellar systems of ionic and non ionic surfactants
2001
The interactions of Tryptophan (TRP) and Serotonin (5-HT), with water-containing sodium bis (2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT), didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) and tetraethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E4) reversed micelles have been investigated by UV absorption spectroscopy. Our results suggest that independently of the nature of the surfactant and the amount of the water encapsulated into the micellar core, TRP and 5-HT are solubilized in the micellar phase, preferring to be located in a shallow region constituted by the hydrated surfactant head groups. This is due to the amphiphilic nature of TRP and 5-HT and the biological implications are discussed.

Effect of family structure and TPH2 G-703T on the stability of dysregulation profile throughout adolescence
2015
Abstract Background Two different polymorphisms (TPH2 G-703T and 5-HTTLPR) involved in the serotonergic pathway have been reported to play a role, both alone and in interaction with the environment, in early and adult emotion regulation. As most of these studies are cross-sectional, we know little about the impact of these polymorphisms over time, particularly during adolescence. Methods Because we were interested in the effects of these polymorphisms and environment (i.e., family structure) at different time-points on the emotional dysregulation profile, we performed a path analysis model in a general adolescent population sample of a five-year follow-up study. Results We found a high stab…
Epidemiology of intensive care unit-acquired sepsis in Italy: Results of the SPIN-UTI network
2018
Background. Sepsis is the major cause of mortality from any infectious disease worldwide. Sepsis may be the result of a healthcare associated infection (HAI): the most frequent adverse events during care delivery especially in Intensive Care Units (ICUs). The main aim of the present study was to describe the epidemiology of ICU-acquired sepsis and related outcomes among patients enrolled in the framework of the Italian Nosocomial Infections Surveillance in ICUs - SPIN-UTI project. Study design. Prospective multicenter study. Methods. The SPIN-UTI network adopted the European protocols for patient-based HAI surveillance. Results. During the five editions of the SPIN-UTI project, from 2008 to…
