Pistachio fruits rust caused by Tuberculina persicina (Ditmar) Sacc., anamorph of Helicobasidium purpureum (Tul.) Pat.

In the study, we found rust in pistachio fruits and verified that it was caused by Tuberculina persicina, anamorph of Helicobasidium purpureum, through isolation and culture, microscopic observation, molecular identification and pathogenicity tests of Koch’s postulates. To our knowledge, this is the first report of rust fruit in pistachio caused by Tuberculina persicina.

Boosting effect of IL-7 in interferon gamma release assays to diagnose Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection.

BACKGROUND A quarter of the world's population is estimated to be infected with Myobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). Infection is detected by immune response to M. tuberculosis antigens using either tuberculin skin test (TST) and interferon gamma release (IGRA's), tests which have low sensitivity in immunocompromised. IL-7 is an important cytokine for T-cell function with potential to augment cytokine release in in-vitro assays. Mycobacterium bovis, the causative agent of the bovine tuberculosis (bTB), mainly affects cattle, its natural reservoir, but also a wide range of domestic and wild mammals. Besides direct transmission via contaminated aerosols, indirect transmission of the M. bovis between wildlife and livestock might occur by inhalation or ingestion of environmental substrates contaminated through infected animal shedding. We monitored the survival of M. bovis in two soil samples chosen for their contrasted physical and-chemical properties (i.e. pH, clay content). Dendritic cells (DCs) are considered to be promising adjuvants for inducing immunity to cancer. We used mature, monocyte-derived DCs to elicit resistance to malignant melanoma. The DCs were pulsed with Mage-3A1 tumor peptide and a recall antigen, tetanus toxoid or tuberculin. 11 far advanced stage IV melanoma patients, who were progressive despite standard chemotherapy, received five DC vaccinations at 14-d intervals. The first three vaccinations were administered into the skin, 3 × 106 DCs each subcutaneously and intradermally, followed by two intravenous injections of 6 × 106 and 12 × 106 DCs, respectively. A case of agammaglobulinemia characterized by a defect of B-lymphocyte-differentiation to plasma cells

Humoral and cell-mediated immune reactions of a 36-year old patient with a late onset of an agammaglobulinaemia and of his immediate relatives have been investigated. The immunoglobulins gamma-G, gamma-A, gamma-M, gamma-E and gamma-D, and plasma cells in the bone marrow could not be detected in the patient's serum. Immune reactions with PPD and tetanus toxoid as well as the stimulation of the lymphocytes with PHA indicate that the T-cell system was intact. The examination of the peripheral blood lymphocytes by immunofluorescence techniques gave a normal number of B-lymphocytes. Prevention and early detection of tuberculosis

1,570 subjects with known TB contacts (active TB, old TB and primary infection) and individuals with no known contacts but belonging to 'defined TB risk groups' were screened at the Department of Tuberculosis Prevention at the La Fe Hospital in Valencia. The total infection rate was 40.13% and active TBC was diagnosed in 2.23% of the population screened. Infection and disease rates were significant in all the groups examined, showing the need for correct screening not only for active TB contacts but also for child primary infection contacts, old TB cases not previously screened and subjects with no known contacts but belonging to a 'TB risk group'.
