Redox reactions in the Pt/TiO2–WO3/SiO2 planar system

Abstract The thermal behavior of the titanium–tungsten adhesive layer (30–70 at.%) deposited on a SiO2 substrate followed by a thicker Pt layer was investigated. The resulting Pt/TiW/SiO2 planar system was annealed under air or vacuum. Morphological and chemical characterizations at different stages of the annealing, as a function of several parameters such as treatment atmosphere, annealing temperature and thickness of the Pt film were performed through surface science analyses. When annealing under air, even at mild temperature (773 K), the whole interlayer oxidizes while a low amount of tungsten diffuses through platinum film. Reversible oxidation of WOx and MoOx nano phases

International audience; WOx and MoOx nano phases were prepared on TiO2(1 1 0) surfaces by a CVD procedure consisting of adsorption and decomposition of W(CO)(6) or Mo(CO)(6) precursors followed by annealing under UHV. Metal amount involved in each elaborated sample is in the fractional range from 0.1 to 0.35 equivalent monolayer (eqML) of W or Mo. Evolution of sample stoichiometry as a function of subsequent treatment is followed by valence band and core level photoemission as well as work function measurement. [EN] A visible-light driven photoelectrochemical degradation process has been applied to a solution polluted with the organophosphate insecticide chlorfenvinphos. Different WO3 nanosheets/nanorods have been used as photoanodes. These nanostructured electrodes have been fabricated by anodization of tungsten and, subsequently, they have been subjected to a thermal treatment (annealing). The combined influence of annealing temperature (400¿°C and 600¿°C) and operation pH (1 and 3) on the photoelectrocatalytic behavior of these nanorods has been examined through a statistical analysis. Anodic oxide films on tungsten—I. The influence of anodizing parameters on charging curves and film composition

Abstract The formation of anodic films on tungsten has been studied in 1N solutions of H 2 PO 4 , H 2 SO 4 , HNO 3 , HClO 4 and HCl at different temperatures. The shape of the anodic charging curves depends on the electrolyte composition and on the temperature. The chemical composition of the films is strongly influenced by the working temperature. The first step of the anodization is the formation of a barrier film of amorphous WO 3 . The thickening of the oxide layer occurs on account of the WO 3 dissolution and following precipitation of sparingly soluble oxides on the electrode surface.
Anodic oxide films on tungsten—II. The morphology and dissolution of the films

Abstract Scanning electron microscopy was used to investigate the morphology of anodic oxide films on tungsten, obtained in various conditions of anodization. Studies were made of the growth of porous films, whose thickness increases with time and depends upon the current density. Temperature and electrolyte composition influence the film morphology. Gravimetric measurements of film dissolution at 70°C show that after a transient time, the rate of metal dissolution and that of film formation coincide. The porous films thicken because tungsten dissolves as WO 2 2+ and precipitates as WO 3 .H 2 O.

Specimens with intentionally embedded weld defects or flaws can be employed for training, development and research into procedures for mechanical property evaluation and structural integrity assessment. It is critical that the artificial defects are a realistic representation of the flaws produced by welding. Cylindrical holes, which are usually machined after welding, are not realistic enough for our purposes as it is known that they are easier to detect than the naturally occurring imperfections and cracks. A tensiostatic study of the anodic behaviour of tungsten in acid solutions

Abstract Tensiostatic anodization of tungsten has been studied in 1 N solutions of H 2 SO 4 , HClO 42 , HNH 2 SO 3 and HCl at 25 °C. For several voltage values, the curves of current vs . time and open-circuit voltage vs . time have been obtained. All results indicate that the oxide films produced during the polarization are slowly dissolved in the acid solutions. The HCl, and to a lesser extent the HNH 2 SO 3 solutions, show a more aggressive behaviour. For values of the applied voltage above about 50 V, gas evolution begins. In the case of HCl solutions, the gas is Cl 2 and the electrode is rapidly corroded.
Reconstructed bcc Co films on the surface

Abstract Ultrathin epitaxial Co films on Cr ( 1 1 0 ) are examined by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM and STS). At room temperature Co grows as pseudomorphic bcc layers for the first two monolayers and forms close-packed Co layers with stacking faults for thicker coverages. A periodic lattice distortion appears in two equivalent (3 × 1) reconstruction domains in combination with a regular lattice of dislocation lines oriented along the in-plane close-packed row directions bcc [ 1 1 ¯ 1 ] and bcc [ 1 ¯ 1 1 ] . The Ba2LnFeNb4O15 “tetragonal tungsten bronze”: Towards RT composite multiferroics

Several Niobium oxides of formula Ba2LnFeNb4O15 (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd) with the Tetragonal Tungsten Bronze (TTB) structure have been synthesised by conventional solid-state methods. The Neodymium, Samarium and Europium compounds are ferroelectric with Curie temperature ranging from 320 to 440K. The Praseodymium and Gadolinium compounds behave as relaxors below 170 and 300 K respectively. The Praseodymium, Neodymium, Samarium, Europium and Gadolinium compounds exhibit magnetic hysteresis loops at room temperature originating from traces of a barium ferrite secondary phase. Grinding Tungsten Carbide Used for Manufacturing Gun Drills

This paper presents a study of grinding cemented carbide DK460UF (91 % WC and 9 % Co), a material used to produce cutting tools with solid cutting edges. The aim is to establish the manufacturing conditions that lead to high surface quality. A model of the main factors that influence the grinding process is presented first. Following that, grinding wheel wear and surface roughness are analysed. Grinding wheel wear is studied in experimental conditions under which small diameter gun drills were sharpened with two diamond grinding wheels of different grain sizes.
