Presence of human papillomavirus and Epstein-Barr virus in the cervix of women infected with the human immunodeficiency virus

The presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was sought in cervical scrapings from 110 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected women to evaluate the role of these viruses as risk factors for squamous intraepithelial lesions of the cervix. By using PCR, presence of HPV-DNA and EBV-DNA was found in 60.9% (67/110) and in 10% (11/110) of clinical samples, respectively. Identification of oncogenic group of HPV by hybrid capture (HC II, Murex-Digene) indicated the presence of low-risk HPV in 13 (19.4%) patients, high-risk HPV in 28 (41.8%), and both types of HPV in 26 (38.8%) patients. Usually the methodologies used to analyse the feasibility of water reuse projects are focused on the internal costs. The aim of this paper is to show a methodology to assess the feasibility of a water reuse project taking into account not just the internal impact, but also the external impact (environmental and social, for example) and the opportunity cost derived from the project. Internal benefit is obtained from the difference between internal income and internal costs. Internal income is obtained by multiplying the selling price of reclaimed water and the volume obtained. This allows the opportunity cost of producing sustainability to be evaluated. Fine tuning of a photonic band-gap with picosecond laser pulses

We report on light-driven tuning of the optical properties of colloidal photonic crystals (polystyrene opals) doped with gold nanoparticles (Au-np). Using picosecond pulses at 532 nm we obtained permanent changes in the stop band around 1700 nm, with resonance blue shifts as large as 30 nm.
