Cell and tissue response to nanotextured Ti6Al4V and Zr implants using high-speed femtosecond laser-induced periodic surface structures
2019
In this paper, the effect of femtosecond laser nanotexturing of surfaces of Ti6Al4V and Zr implants on their biological compatibility is presented and discussed. Highly regular and homogeneous nanostructures with sub-micrometer period were imprinted on implant surfaces. Surfaces were morphologically and chemically investigated by SEM and XPS. HDFa cell lines were used for toxicity and cell viability tests, and subcutaneous implantation was applied to characterize tissue response. HDFa proliferation and in vivo experiments evidenced the strong influence of the surface topography compared to the effect of the surface elemental composition (metal or alloy). The effect of protein adsorption fro…
Detection and characterisation of disbonds on Fibre Metal Laminate hybrid composites by flying laser spot thermography
2017
Abstract In this work a novel data collection and processing is proposed for the Infrared Non-Destructive Testing (IR-NDT) of interlaminar disbonds on Fibre Metal Laminate (FML) hybrid composites. The adopted active IR-NDT scheme uses a pointwise laser heat source that is moved along a raster scanning trajectory over the object surface. A Focal Plane Array IR camera is employed to acquire the thermal field generated by the moving heat source. Disbonds defect signatures are then searched by analysing the perturbations of the temperature distribution over a reference area following the heat source. The proposed methodology has been implemented on a GLARE sample, since this class of FMLs has g…
Faraday effect in standard optical fibers: dispersion of the effective Verdet constant
1996
We have measured the Faraday effect in silica standard optical fibers in the wavelength range 458-1523 nm. An effective Verdet constant Vef that exhibits a linear dependence on the square of the optical frequency ν is defined: V(ef) = (0.142 ± 0.004) × 10(-28) ν(2) rad T(-1) m(-1). We demonstrate that the negative effects of a small linear birefringence can be minimized by adjustment of the input polarization to an optimum state.
Structure-property relationship of PLA-Opuntia Ficus Indica biocomposites
2019
Abstract In this work, a lignocellulosic flour was achieved by grinding the cladodes of Opuntia Ficus Indica and then added to a poly-lactic acid (PLA) in order to prepare biocomposites by melt processing. The influence of filler content and size on the morphological, rheological, and mechanical properties of the green composites was assessed. Moreover, solvent-aided filler extraction enabled to evaluate the homogeneity of filler dispersion, as well as the effect of processing on the geometrical features of the fillers. The experimental data obtained by tensile tests proved to be remarkably higher than those predicted by Halpin–Tsai model, presumably due to the capability of the polymer to …
Sample building orientation effect on porosity and mechanical properties in Selective Laser Melting of Ti6Al4V titanium alloy
2022
Abstract In recent decades, the focus of research has shifted towards new production technologies with the aim of optimizing production and reducing costs. These innovative technologies include additive manufacturing processes as Selective Laser Melting (SLM). The analysis of the literature on the identification of optimal building orientation to maximize the mechanical properties and minimize porosity of the final products highlights contrasting results, denoting that the thermomechanical complexity of the process, as associated with the variation of the building orientation, has not been fully clarified. A study in which the building orientation effect was evaluated together with the geom…
Ultrasound-assisted bleaching: Mathematical and 3D computational fluid dynamics simulation of ultrasound parameters on microbubble formation and cavi…
2019
Abstract The implementation of ultrasound-assisted bleaching (UAB) is gaining interest in commercial oil refining, as an alternative to the current bleaching procedure (BP), because this technique has several advantages compared to the conventional BP. The mathematical and 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of the influence of ultrasound power, frequency and temperature for predicting microbubble formation and heat transfer in the ultrasonic treatment of soybean oil was assessed in order to optimize the UAB process. The fluctuation frequency and wave speed showed opposite effects on system response to the imposed pressure pulse. As the bubble radius shrinks to zero (after bubb…
On the Improved Current Pulse method for the thermal diffusive characterization of lithiated ceramic pebble beds
2012
Abstract Packed pebble beds are granular systems composed of small particles generally arranged in irregular lattices and surrounded by a gas filling their interstitial spaces. They show non-linear and coupled thermal and mechanical behaviours, which are under theoretical and experimental investigation to set-up a realistic constitutive model to be adopted for design-oriented purposes. At the Department of Nuclear Engineering (DIN) of the University of Palermo a realistic constitutive model of fusion-relevant pebble beds thermo-mechanical behaviour was developed adopting a “continuous” approach, based on the assumption that a pebble bed could be considered as a continuous, homogeneous and i…
Numerical investigation of laser beam shaping for heat transfer control in laser processing
2002
This article presents a thermal finite volume model adapted to investigate laser processes. It is specially developed to treat moving heat sources with phase changes, melting and vapourisation. Heat transfer control in laser processing is particularly useful when processes must respect prescribed temperatures, or more generally, prescribed constraints. These processes involve generally several laser sources, or non-conventional power distribution. Hence, they have numerous parameters to set. Experimental optimisation is difficult and may be expansive. The numerical model is a useful and cheaper tool for development of those complex processes. For example in this article, two special laser p…
