Effect of alkyl derivatization of gellan gum during the fabrication of electrospun membranes

2021

Electrospun nanofibers based on polysaccharides represent a consolidated approach in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (TERM) and nanomedicine as a drug delivery system (DDS). In this work, two chemical derivatives of a low molecular weight gellan gum (96.7 kDa) with aliphatic pendant tails were processed by electrospinning technique into non-woven nanofibrous mats. In order to generate spinnable blends, it was necessary to associate poly vinyl alcohol (PVA). The relationships between the physicochemical properties and the processability via electrospinning technique of gellan gum alkyl derivatives (GG-C8 and GG-C12 having a degree of alkyl chain derivatization of 17 mol % and 1…

Structure–property relationship and controlled drug release from multiphasic electrospun carvacrol-embedded polylactic acid/polyethylene glycol and p…

2018

Electrospinning technologies gained considerable interest over the last decade. In this study, it is proposed a systematic study of polylactic acid/polyethylene glycol (PLA/PEG) and polylactic acid/polyethylene oxide (PLA/PEO) electrospun blends at different concentrations. The effect of blend composition and PEG molecular weight on the morphological and mechanical properties of the mats was evaluated. Furthermore, the kinetic release of carvacrol as model drug in phosphate buffer saline at 37℃ was studied and the data were then fitted using an exponential model. The scanning electron microscopy revealed that the morphology of the mats was strongly dependent on the relative ratio PLA:PEG, …

Angular variation of thermal infrared emissivity for some natural surfaces from experimental measurements

2008

Multiangle algorithms for estimating sea and land surface temperature with Along-Track Scanning Radiometer data require a precise knowledge of the angular variation of surface emissivity in the thermal infrared. Currently, few measurements of this variation exist. Here an experimental investigation of the angular variation of the infrared emissivity in the thermal infrared (8-14-microm) band of some representative samples was made at angles of 0 degrees-65 degrees (at 5 degrees increments) to the surface normal. The results show a decrease of the emissivity with increasing viewing angle, with water showing the highest angular dependence (approximately 7% from 0 degrees to 65 degrees views).…

Partial Discharges Diagnostics Along Medium Voltage Cables

2018

In the last years different partial discharge (PD) measuring techniques have been developed because PD diagnostic is the most widely tool to evaluate the insulation condition of a power cable. Recently non-conventional methods and sensors have been used in order to reach improved results in PD measurements. New sensors based on wireless technology were developed in order to simplify PD measurement especially for on-line, on-site diagnosis. The purpose of this work is to perform measurements that allow to study the variation of pulses when they travel along a medium voltage cable and characterize a new smart PD source detector and locator, named Wings sensor. For these purposes, internal PD …

Flexural vibrations of discontinuous layered elastically bonded beams

2018

Abstract This paper addresses the dynamic flexural behavior of layered elastically bonded beams carrying an arbitrary number of elastic translational supports and rotational joints. The beams are referred to as discontinuous for the discontinuities of response variables at the application points of supports/joints. The Euler-Bernoulli hypothesis is assumed to hold for each layer separately, and a linear constitutive relation between the horizontal interlayer slip and the interlaminar shear force is considered. Based on the theory of generalized functions to handle the discontinuities of response variables due to supports/joints, exact beam modes are obtained from a characteristic equation b…

Salt spray fog ageing of hybrid composite/metal rivet joints for automotive applications

2017

Abstract The present experimental investigation aims to investigate the effect of salt-fog exposition on the mechanical behaviour of composite/metal riveted joints. To this aim, two kinds of joint were exposed to salt-fog environmental conditions according to ASTM B117 standard, for fifteen weeks. In particular, two composite laminates (i.e. glass fibre and carbon fibre/epoxy composites) were used as composite substrate joined with the metal substrate (i.e. aluminium alloy Al 6060). Single-lap shear tests were carried out in order to evaluate the evolution of the mechanical performances and the damage mechanisms of the riveted joints during the ageing exposition. The results evidence that t…

Morphology and structure of electrospun CoFe2O4/multi-wall carbon nanotubes composite nanofibers

2010

CoFe2O4/multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) composite nanofibers were produced by electrospinning a dispersion of MWCNTs in a solution of polyvinylpyrrolidone, iron(III) nitrate nonahydrate, cobalt (II) acetate tetrahydrate, absolute ethanol and H2O. Microstructure was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). Thermal behaviour was studied by thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) and phase analysis of calcined fibers was performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Upon thermal treatment at 450 °C defect-free, randomly oriented composite fibers having a mean diameter of 60 ± 10 nm were obtained. The results s…

Bonding behavior of Bi-metal-deposits produced by hybrid cold spray additive manufacturing

2022

Abstract Cold spraying (CS) is one of the most recently used additive manufacturing (AM) processes that allow forming large 3D objects efficiently without severe thermal effects. However, due to some limitations of the CSAM process, it is difficult to achieve the desired geometry with high precision. As a potential solution to this issue, CSAM process coupled machining, that is, hybrid addition and subtraction manufacturing, is proposed to achieve desired accuracy and reliable shape. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the mechanical reliability of multilayer deposits deposited by CSAM + machining processes before that. In this work, different bi-deposits were obtained via hybrid CSAM. The…

Numerical simulations of the dependency of flow pattern on impeller clearance in stirred vessels

2001

The flow and turbulence fields in a fully baffled vessel stirred by a Rushton turbine have been simulated by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques. The simulation techniques adopted (the "Sliding-grid" and "Inner-outer" methods) are fully predictive and require no experimental data as boundary or initial conditions. The effect of clearance (C) on the flow patterns in stirred vessels was simulated as the flow field transition observed can be considered a particularly stringent benchmark for the testing of CFD techniques. The results are compared with previously obtained LDA data and show that the double- to single-loop transition experimentally observed when impeller clearan…

Application of silicon-based camera for measurement of non-homogeneous thermal field on realistic specimen surface

2019

Abstract The high-cost low-resolution infrared cameras operating in middle infrared spectral ranges are widely used to detect the thermal fields. In this study, a low-cost high-resolution silicon-based sensor camera operating in near infrared spectral ranges is used to perform the observation of the thermal fields on the realistic steel specimen surface. In near-infrared spectral ranges, a small temperature variation led to a large modification in the sensor illumination, inducing acquired images with over saturation or poor dynamic range of gray levels. To address this problem, an algorithm was used to precisely adjust the exposure time to acquire images with constant gray level whatever t…
