Looking for the best modes helps solving the MRCPSP/max
2013
The multi-mode resource-constrained project scheduling problem with minimum and maximum time lags MRCPSP/max is a very general project scheduling problem with multiple execution modes per activity, renewable and non-renewable resources and minimum and maximum time lags between activities. In this paper, we describe SA-EVA, an algorithm for the problem. SA-EVA first searches for the best mode for each activity, without considering renewable resources. In this phase a simulated annealing is applied. Once a mode vector has been chosen, the problem reduces to the RCPSP/max, which SA-EVA solves with EVA, an algorithm designed in Ballestin et al. [2009. An evolutionary algorithm for the resource-…
Time and work generalised precedence relationships in project scheduling with pre-emption: An application to the management of Service Centres
2012
Abstract In this paper we present an application of project scheduling concepts and solution procedures for the solution of a complex problem that comes up in the daily management of many company Service Centres. The real problem has been modelled as a multi-mode resource-constrained project scheduling problem with pre-emption, time and work generalised precedence relationships with minimal and maximal time lags between the tasks and due dates. We present a complete study of work GPRs which includes proper definitions, a new notation and all possible conversions amongst them. Computational results that show the efficiency of the proposed hybrid genetic algorithm and the advantages of allowi…
Microbial analysis of raw cows' milk used for cheese-making: influence of storage treatments on microbial composition and other technological traits
2010
Raw milk used to produce Grana cheese was subjected to several treatment regimes, including varying temperatures and storage times. Milk from morning and evening milking were transferred to a dairy factory sepa- rately (double delivery) or together (single delivery), after storage at the farm for 12 h; in the former case, milk was stored at 12 or 8°C, whereas, in the latter, it was kept at ambient temperature or 18°C. Values of pH of the vat milk were lower for milk samples kept at room temperature, while other physico-chemical parameters and rheological characteristics tested did not show significant differ- ences linked to the different storage temperatures of milk used for ‘‘Grana Trenti…
Kinetic Study of the Oxidation of n-Butane on Vanadium Oxide Supported on Al/Mg Mixed Oxide
1997
The reaction kinetics of the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of n-butane over vanadia supported on a heat-treated Mg/Al hydrotalcite (37.3 wt % of V2O5) was investigated by both linear and nonlinear regression techniques. A reaction network including the formation of butenes (1-, 2-cis-, and 2-trans-butene), butadiene, and carbon oxides by parallel and consecutive reactions, at low and high n-butane conversions, has been proposed. Langmuir−Hinshelwood (LH) models can be used as suitable models which allows reproduction of the global kinetic behavior, although differences between oxydehydrogenation and deep oxidation reactions have been observed. Thus, the formation of oxydehydrogenation pro…

Design and development of a new machine tool for continuous friction stir extrusion
2023
In the present paper the Continuous Friction Stir Extrusion process (CFSE), derived from the already known Friction Stir Extrusion (FSE), is proposed for effective solid-state recycling of metal scraps. A new dedicated machine tool was designed and developed. A Lagrangian implicit thermomechanical numerical model was set up and used to determine the proper ranges of the most relevant process parameters. An effective case study is proposed, involving the actual extrusion of a recycled wire in a continuous way. Metallurgical observations and mechanical characterization tests were carried out on the obtained specimen showing the potential of the process and its industrial feasibility.(c) 2023 …
Study on New Product Development, by Networking
2015
The paper presents a situation of working in network in order to design or improve a new product. To implement theoretical models and to validate a working algorithm into a virtual research, there was proposed a specific theme from drilling and chamfering tool. The facilities offered by the research centers – database, software - led to rapid selection and configuration solutions, demonstrating achieving research productivity growth and a substantial reduction of times redesign.
Exergy recovery during LNG regasification: Electric energy production – Part one
2009
Abstract In liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification facilities, for exergy recovery during regasification, an option could be the production of electric energy recovering the energy available as cold. In a previous paper, the authors propose an innovative process which uses a cryogenic stream of LNG during regasification as a cold source in an improved combined heat and power (CHP) plant. Considering the LNG regasification projects in progress all over the World, an appropriate design option could be based on a modular unit having a mean regasification capacity of 2 × 109 standard cubic meters/year. This paper deals with the results of feasibility studies, developed by the authors at DRE…
Cold recovery during regasification of LNG part one: Cold utilization far from the regasification facility
2010
The paper deals with cold recovery during LNG regasification. The applications analyzed pertain to the use in deep freezing agro food industry and in space air conditioning facilities in commercial sector (Supermarkets and Hypermarkets) of cold recovered from the regasification process. A modular LNG regasification unit is proposed having the regasification capacity of 2 billion standard cubic meters/year of gas and it is based on use of a Power Cycle working with Ethane, this unit allows operation of cold energy transfer, contained in LNG to be regasified, in a range of temperatures suitable for multipurpose use of cold, reducing regasification process irreversibility. Some electric energy…
Cold recovery during regasification of LNG part two: applications in an Agro Food Industry and a Hypermarket
2011
Abstract The paper deals with the cold energy available during LNG regasification, which can be recovered and utilized both inside the LNG regasification area and at a distance, such as in deep freezing agro food industry facilities and for space conditioning in the commercial and residential sector (e.g. Supermarkets and Hypermarkets). The feasibility study of this kind of application has been carried out at DREAM, Palermo University, within the framework of a research program. The results of a feasibility study of the kind of venture proposed, starting from its conceptual design and with a thorough thermodynamic and economic analysis, demonstrated the suitability and the profitability of …
