Knowledge management and intellectual capital in the business model innovation of Costa Rican manufacturing firms

2022

Abstract The purpose of this article is to analyze the impact of knowledge management and intellectual capital on the ability of companies to generate business model innovation. To evaluate the proposed hypotheses, we surveyed a final sample of 100 Costa Rican manufacturing companies and analyzed the data using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results show that knowledge management positively contributes to the development of business model innovations. Similarly, intellectual capital has a direct positive influence on business model innovation. However, the direct contribution intellectual capital depends on the adoption of practices that encourage knowledg…

One-Counter Verifiers for Decidable Languages

2013

Condon and Lipton (FOCS 1989) showed that the class of languages having a space-bounded interactive proof system (IPS) is a proper subset of decidable languages, where the verifier is a probabilistic Turing machine. In this paper, we show that if we use architecturally restricted verifiers instead of restricting the working memory, i.e. replacing the working tape(s) with a single counter, we can define some IPS’s for each decidable language. Such verifiers are called two-way probabilistic one-counter automata (2pca’s). Then, we show that by adding a fixed-size quantum memory to a 2pca, called a two-way one-counter automaton with quantum and classical states (2qcca), the protocol can be spac…

Refined equivalent single layer formulations and finite elements for smart laminates free vibrations

2014

A family of 2D refined equivalent single layer models for multilayered and functionally graded smart magneto-electro-elastic plates is presented. They are based on variable kinematics and quasi-static behavior for the electromagnetic fields. First, the electromagnetic state of the plate is determined by solving the strong form of the electromagnetic governing equations coupled with the corresponding interface continuity conditions and external boundary conditions. The electromagnetic state is then condensed into the plate kinematics, whose governing equations can be written using the generalized principle of virtual displacements. The procedure identifies an effective elastic plate kinemati…

Boundary controlled irreversible port-Hamiltonian systems

2021

Abstract Boundary controlled irreversible port-Hamiltonian systems (BC-IPHS) defined on a 1-dimensional spatial domain are defined by extending the formulation of reversible BC-PHS to irreversible thermodynamic systems controlled at the boundaries of their spatial domain. The structure of BC-IPHS has clear physical interpretation, characterizing the coupling between energy storing and energy dissipating elements. By extending the definition of boundary port variables of BC-PHS to deal with the irreversible energy dissipation, a set of boundary port variables are defined such that BC-IPHS are passive with respect to a given set of conjugated inputs and outputs. As for finite dimensional IPHS…

Pricing sovereign contingent convertible debt

2018

We develop a pricing model for Sovereign Contingent Convertible bonds (S-CoCo) with payment standstills triggered by a sovereign's Credit Default Swap (CDS) spread. We model CDS spread regime switching, which is prevalent during crises, as a hidden Markov process, coupled with a mean-reverting stochastic process of spread levels under fixed regimes, in order to obtain S-CoCo prices through simulation. The paper uses the pricing model in a Longstaff-Schwartz American option pricing framework to compute future state contingent S-CoCo prices for risk management. Dual trigger pricing is also discussed using the idiosyncratic CDS spread for the sovereign debt together with a broad market index. …

Spatial Localization in Manufacturing: A Cross-Country Analysis

2009

This paper employs a homogenous firms' database to investigate industry localiza- tion in European countries. More specifically, we compare, across industries and countries, the predictions of two of the most popular localization indices, i.e., the Ellison and Glaeser index (Ellison and Glaeser, 1997) and the Duranton and Over- man index (Duranton and Overman, 2005). We find that, independently from the index used, localization is a pervasive phenomenon in all countries studied, but the degree of localization is very uneven across industries in each country. Furthermore, we find that the two indices significantly diverge in predicting the intensity of the forces generating localization with…

Cross-diffusion effects on stationary pattern formation in the FitzHugh-Nagumo model

2022

<p style='text-indent:20px;'>We investigate the formation of stationary patterns in the FitzHugh-Nagumo reaction-diffusion system with linear cross-diffusion terms. We focus our analysis on the effects of cross-diffusion on the Turing mechanism. Linear stability analysis indicates that positive values of the inhibitor cross-diffusion enlarge the region in the parameter space where a Turing instability is excited. A sufficiently large cross-diffusion coefficient of the inhibitor removes the requirement imposed by the classical Turing mechanism that the inhibitor must diffuse faster than the activator. In an extended region of the parameter space a new phenomenon occurs, namely the exis…

The lay historian explains intergroup behavior: Examining the role of identification and cognitive structuring in ethnocentric historical attributions

2017

Both historians and lay people attempt to explain national histories. However, psychological research, to date, focused predominantly on the patterns of those explanations with regard to negative historical behaviors. In this article, we assess ethnocentrism of people’s explanations of both negative and positive historical behavior of ingroup members (own nation) and outgroup members (other nation). Two studies analyze how Poles explain crimes and heroic acts committed in the General Government, as well as diverse behaviors during the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. The studies confirm an ethnocentric pattern of explanation: positive historical actions of ingroup members we…
