The interaction between culture and sex in the formation of entrepreneurial intentions

2013

This study aims to reveal the effect of an interaction between culture and sex on the formation of entrepreneurial intentions, while building on notions of a cultural construction of gender. The study adopts the theory of planned behaviour as the setting for such exploration, as it has been proven to be robust across national contexts. The analysis is based on survey data collected from business students in Norway and Turkey. Both countries were selected as two distinct and opposite cultural constellations in accordance with the dissatisfaction approach to entrepreneurship. Turkey representing a relatively masculine, high power distance, uncertainty avoiding and collectivistic society; whil…

Evaluation of Female Entrepreneurs’ Emotional Feedback

2018

Female unemployment rates are very high in Turkey. Women’s participation in the work force will not only increase the national income but also increase the number of female entrepreneurs in business life to join what is traditionally considered a man’s world. Although there are few (only about 8.5%) women in management, there are women in top and decision-making positions. To encourage Turkish women into entrepreneurship, there are third-party online organizations which share and publicize online success stories of Turkish female entrepreneurs. This research aims to discover the factors related to female entrepreneurs’ success in business life. The aim of the research is to evaluate female …

Changes in smoking prevalence among first- and second-generation Turkish migrants in Germany – an analysis of the 2005 Microcensus

2009

Abstract Background Compared to the majority population of a host country, migrants tend to have different health risks and health behaviour. We have hypothesised that these differences diminish with time passed since migration. We tested this hypothesis by examining smoking behaviour among Turkish migrants and their children born in Germany (second-generation migrants), stratified by educational level and, for the first generation, length of residence. Methods We estimated the prevalence of smoking based on the representative 2005 Mikrozensus, an annual survey including 1% of Germany's households. The 2005 Microcensus was the first to provide information that makes it possible to different…

Selection of Subjunctors in Turkic Non-Finite Complement Clauses

2013

The topic of the paper is Turkic clausal complementation: the syntactic and semantic behavior of complement clauses, the subjunctors that mark them, and the roles of various predicate types in selecting them. Two main types of bound complementizers serve as subjunctors in complement clauses: a participial and an infinitival type, both usually corresponding to the English complimentizer that. Traditionally, the semantic behavior of the complement clauses has been thought to depend on a distinction between factive and non-factive verbs. Complement clauses provided with participial subjunctors have been described as factive in contrast to non-factive complement clauses provided with infinitiva…

Northeastern Neo-Aramaic and Language Contact

2020

The North-Eastern Neo-Aramaic dialects form one of the surviving branches of the Aramaic language family. Extremely diverse, they are or were spoken by Christian and Jewish minorities originating in Iraq, Turkey, Syria and Iran. They have been in intense contact with other languages of the region, most notably Kurdish, but also Arabic, Turkic languages and Persian. As a result, they show a great deal of contact influence, not only in lexicon and phonology but also in morphology and syntax. The precise forms of the borrowings, as well as their behavior, usually reflect the local dialects of the donor language, showing how important fine-grained dialectal data is in a study of language contac…

Folk Songs, Translation and the Question of (Pseudo-)Originals

2008

AbstractThis article examines the translation of Kurdish folk songs into Turkish, an issue which became the subject of a heated debate and controversy in Turkey during the 1990s. It outlines three areas of criticism related to the translations in question and analyzes the translation strategies used as well as the textual-linguistic makeup of the lyrics. Although criticism tended to focus on the cultural policies of the Turkish state, on the translators themselves, and on questions of ethics and economic exploitation, the translations paradoxically display loss, destruction and forgetting on the one hand, and gain, survival and remembering of Kurdish culture on the other. The translators se…

Microsomal triglyceride transfer protein gene mutations in Turkish children: A novel mutation and clinical follow up.

2016

Abetalipoproteinemia (ABL; OMIM 200100) is a rare autosomal recessive disease that affects the absorption of dietary fats and fat soluble vitamins. Here, we describe the clinical and genetic characteristics of three patients with ABL. Two patients (patients 1 and 2) who were carriers of the c.398-399delAA mutation (previously known mutation) had developmental delay and hepatic steatosis developed at the age of five in patient 1. Patient 3 was the carrier of a novel mutation (g.10886-10902delAAGgtaagtttgtgttg in intron 3 and c.506A>T exon 5) in microsomal triglyceride transfer protein (MTP) gene and had hepatic steatosis.

Validity of demirjian and nolla methods for dental age estimation for Northeastern Turkish children aged 5?16 years old

2012

Objective: To evaluate the applicability of Demirjian and Nolla methods for northeastern Turkish population. Material and Method: A retrospective study was performed on panoramic radiographs of 673 subjects aged 5–15.9 years. The mean dental age (DA) according to the Demirjian and Nolla methods were compared to the mean chronological age (CA). Results: The mean CA of the study sample was 10.37±2.90 and 10.03±2.81 years for females and males, respectively. Using the Demirjian method, the mean estimated DA was 11.26±3.02 years for females and 10.87±2.96 years for males. For Nolla method, the mean estimated DA was 9.80±3.41 and 9.53±3.14 years for females and males, respectively. The mean diff…

Multiple identification of a particular type of hereditary C1q deficiency in the Turkish population: review of the cases and additional genetic and f…

1997

Complete selective deficiencies of the complement component C1q are rare genetic disorders that are associated with recurrent infections and a high prevalence of lupus erythematosus-like symptoms. All C1q deficiencies studied at the genetic level revealed single-base mutations leading to termination codons, frameshifts or amino acid exchanges and these were thought to be responsible for the defects as no other aberrations were found. One particular mutation, leading to a stop codon in the C1qA gene, was first identified in members of a Gypsy family from the Slovak Republic. The same mutation has been found in all cases of C1q deficiency from Turkey that have been investigated. Here we prese…

Cancer patterns among children of Turkish descent in Germany: A study at the German Childhood Cancer Registry

2008

Abstract Background Cancer risks of migrants might differ from risks of the indigenous population due to differences in socioeconomic status, life style, or genetic factors. The aim of this study was to investigate cancer patterns among children of Turkish descent in Germany. Methods We identified cases with Turkish names (as a proxy of Turkish descent) among the 37,259 cases of childhood cancer registered in the German Childhood Cancer Registry (GCCR) during 1980–2005. As it is not possible to obtain reference population data for children of Turkish descent, the distribution of cancer diagnoses was compared between cases of Turkish descent and all remaining (mainly German) cases in the reg…
