Economic globalization and voter turnout in established democracies

This paper asks whether international economic integration negatively affects electoral turnout. The theoretical model builds on the premise that economic integration constrains the ability of national governments to shape outcomes. Citizens are conscious of such constraints and take them into account when considering the costs and benefits of casting a vote in national elections. The result is a lower inclination to vote under conditions of high economic integration. Consequently, aggregate turnout is lower the more internationally integrated a national economy is. The aim of the present longitudinal study was to quantitatively examine whether an ethical organizational culture predicts turnover among managers. To complement the quantitative results, a further important aim was to examine the self-reported reasons behind manager turnover, and the associations of ethical organizational culture with these reasons. Motivations, adoption and impact of voluntary environmental certification in the Italian Forest based industry: The case of the FSC standard

Abstract Over the past few years several private voluntary schemes have been developed worldwide to address the environmental issues in the forest based industry. Using survey data, this study analyse the main factors motivating companies operating in the Italian forest based industry to implement FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) standard, as a tool to promote responsible forest management and traceability of derived products, and the impact of this standard on the economic and organisational results. Audit fees and cost of debt: differences in the credibility of voluntary and mandatory audits

Despite the extensive research on audit fees, few studies have examined the effect of audit fees on the cost of debt. Based on the credence goods theory, we examine whether the effect of audits on the cost of debt is affected by the type of audit (voluntary or mandatory) and the audit fees, as well as whether there is a combined effect of voluntary audits and audit fees, so that the effect of voluntary audits on the cost of debt is affected by audit fees. This research examines the link between turnover intentions from temporary and permanent organizations and how both types of turnover intentions affect employee performance at an individual, temporary and permanent organizational level. Using dyadic data from 253 team members and their supervisors we find that turnover intentions from temporary organizations significantly enhance turnover intentions from permanent organizations, which leads to decreasing performance at all three levels. Third sector employees have claimed to enjoy high job satisfaction and low turnover intentions because their work is considered intrinsically rewarding. Employees have strong motivation for public service and they consider the organization’s goals as their own. This makes work meaningful and thus reduces turnover intentions. Changes in the third sector institutional environment, however, have intensified the working environment. This probably undermines job quality and thus increases turnover intentions. One important class of biological reactive intermediates arising in the course of human xenobiotic metabolism are arene and alkene oxides. The major safeguard against the potential genotoxic effects of these compounds is the microsomal epoxide hydrolase (mEH). This enzyme has a broad substrate specificity but--on the first sight--seems to be inadequately suited for this protection task due to its low turnover number with most of its substrates. Imidazolium-Functionalized Carbon Nanohorns for the Conversion of Carbon Dioxide

Six new hybrid materials composed of carbon nanohorns (CNHs) and highly cross-linked imidazolium salts were easily synthesized using a one-step procedure based on the radical oligomerization of bis-vinylimidazolium salts (bVImiX) in the presence of pristine CNHs. The hybrid materials were characterized and employed as the sole catalysts for the conversion of carbon dioxide into cyclic carbonate by reaction with epoxides. International audience; L'étude du remplacement du dirigeant emblématique de l'entreprise Carrefour, au début de l'année 2005, permet d'illustrer le rôle disciplinaire joué par les analystes financiers, ainsi que les effets pervers résultant de la pression exercée par ces derniers sur la qualité des états financiers. En effet, il apparaît que l'ancien dirigeant a géré les résultats à la hausse au cours des deux années précédentes, pour éviter d'annoncer une « mauvaise surprise » (un bénéfice de l'exercice inférieur aux bénéfices prévus par les analystes), alors que le nouveau dirigeant a eu tendance à « nettoyer » les comptes dès sa prise de fonction.
