2015
Tämän pro gradu -tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää Suomen kulttuurihistoriallisten museoiden merkityksiä nykypäivänä pyrkimällä myös hieman ennustamaan tulevaisuudennäkymiä Suomen kansallismuseon ja Helsingin kaupunginmuseon museokävijöiden ja museoammattilaisten antamien näkökulmien kautta. Pro gradu -tutkielmani on esiselvitys laajemmille tutkimuksille sekä empiirisen aineiston hankinnan kokeilu, joiden pohjalta on mahdollista tulevaisuudessa tehdä kattavat tutkimukset Suomen kulttuurihistoriallisten museoiden merkityksistä. Tutkielmani otosmuseoiden avulla halutaan vastata kysymyksiin: 1. Minkälaisia merkityksiä Suomen kulttuurihistoriallisille museoille annetaan nykypäivänä, ja mink…
Rakastumisia kaupunkiin : Helsingin kaupunginmuseon erikoisnäyttelyt 1970-luvulla
2017
Tutkielmassa käsitellään Helsingin kaupunginmuseon erikoisnäyttelyitä vuosina 1967–1983. Tarkastelun painopiste on 1970-luvun näyttelyissä. Tutkimusajanjakso alkaa museon ensimmäisestä erikoisnäyttelystä ja päättyy päätökseen, jonka jälkeen museossa alettiin järjestää vuosittain yksi suurempi erikoisnäyttely, ns. päänäyttely. Erikoisnäyttelytoiminta on käynnistynyt Suomen kulttuurihistoriallisissa museoissa aktiivisemmin 1970-luvulla. Tuolloin näyttelytoiminnan kehittämiseen suhtauduttiin avoimesti ja toimintaan haettiin uusia muotoja. Tutkielmassa erikoisnäyttelyitä lähestytään historiatutkimuksen näkökulmasta, sekä näyttelyitä tarkemmin analysoiden. Tutkielman pääkysymys liittyy siihen, m…
The dimensions of social dynamics in comparative studies on higher education
2013
This article discusses social dynamics of higher education which is one of the most crucial but neglected perspectives in comparative studies of higher education. We pay attention to the importance of time, space and contexts—both geographical and socio-cultural ones—to reveal how they influence on different social dynamics in various systems of higher education. The article focuses on the national higher education system level. Theoretically we approach higher education systems from a relational perspective paying attention to dynamics created by changing relationships between different actors in cultural, geographical and historical contexts. peerReviewed
Exploring global responsibility in higher education students’ cross-cultural dialogues
2019
This study engages with current debate around global education and internationalization of higher education(HE). There is an identified need to critically reflect on how global education commitments are introduced to HE students, and how the debates are brought to individual as well as institutional levels. The study explores how students in a Finnish university develop their understanding of global education, citizenship and potential dispositions towards global responsibility. The students participated in an international seminar on the global Education for All (EFA) process, with purposefully planned participatory activities and cross-cultural dialogues, and reflected on their learning a…
Textiles in blue : production, consumption and material culture in rural areas in early-nineteenth century Finland
2021
The article focuses on masculine consumption patterns and the production and dyeing of textiles in rural Finland in the early nineteenth century. It maintains that the rural consumption of textiles as well as individual choices and tastes evolved, and our selected examples of males’ wardrobes demonstrate that contemporary styles were followed. The article targets an era that can be regarded as a watershed: this was a time when mass production was in its infancy and craft production and self-sufficiency were still relevant to household economies. As the wealth of certain groups, particularly landed peasantry, increased, they began among other things to purchase and wear clothes dyed with imp…
Religious participation in the local communities of 17th-century Eastern Finland
2022
In recent years, the perspective of lived religion has drawn attention toward the everyday religious practices of the laity. In early-modern Europe, the realm of the sacred could be approached in different ways from within the mundane world, and religious practices were tightly intertwined with social life. In local communities, religious ideas and practices taught by the church in varying ways intermingled with traits from local religious traditions. This article examines the different ways of religious participation available to the rural inhabitants of late 17th century Eastern Finland, a part of the kingdom of Sweden during the early modern era. Applying the concept and approach of live…

The Influence of Cultural Competence on the Interpretations of Territorial Identities in European Capitals of Culture
2014
Abstract The EU’s cultural initiative ‘the European Capital of Culture’ (ECOC) includes high identity political aims. It requires the designated cities to introduce and foster local, regional, and European cultural identities. In addition, the cities have used the designation as an opportunity to promote national cultural identity. Audiences of the ECOC events recognize and interpret different kinds of representations of territorial cultural identities from what the cities have to offer in culture. However, the contents of these interpretations vary drastically in the ECOCs. The article discusses whether the competence of interpreting the representations of territorial cultural identities i…
‘Then we were ready to be radicals!’ : school student activism in Finnish upper secondary schools in 1960–1967
2021
In the Western countries, Scandinavia and Finland included, the legacy of the student movement of the 1960s has been extensive and established a fixed narrative of a radical movement. This article challenges the elitists and university-centred grand narrative and argues that the student movement was more multifaceted and mobilized young people of various ages and backgrounds. This is done by addressing the international student movement from the perspective of school-aged students in Finnish upper secondary schools, focusing on student activism carried out in school-sanctioned student associations. Above all, this article aims to distinguish the relatively unknown history of the Scandinavia…
