Goitrous congenital hypothyroidism in a twin pregnancy causing respiratory obstruction at birth: Implications for management

We report a twin pregnancy complicated by fetal goitrous hypothyroidism secondary to dyshormonogenesis caused by thyroglobulin deficiency. Antenatal treatment with intra-amniotic thyroxine was considered but not performed, given the late gestational age at diagnosis and the multiple nature of the pregnancy. Both twins developed airway obstruction at delivery, requiring intubation and ventilation. We review the literature and describe the practical issues relating to the antenatal assessment and perinatal management of fetal goitre.

Estrogen concentration has been suggested to play a role in tendon abnormalities and injury. In physically active postmenopausal women, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has been suggested to decrease tendon diameter. We hypothesized that HRT use and physical activity are associated with Achilles tendon size and tissue structure. Multiple pregnancies are more often associated with complications than singleton pregnancies. In our retrospective study of 613 twin pregnancies the most important risk factors in twin pregnancies were premature labour before the 37th week of gestation and the premature rupture of the membrane. The increase of perinatal mortality and morbidity for twins might be primary the result of premature delivery.
Management of congenital midline nasofrontal dermoid cysts in two identical twins: Case report

Midline dermoid cysts are uncommon lesions that can lead to severe complications when an intracranial extension exists. We report the cases of two twin sisters referred to surgery for removal of the masses and the intracranial extension. They represent an additional example of familial nasal dermoid cysts, providing further support for a genetic basis for the disorder.

In last years, owing to the widespread availability of assisted-reproduction technology, multiple pregnancy rates in Western countries have increased. In twin pregnancies, an increased rate of gestational complications, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), preterm birth and severe perinatal conditions is present. These complications are more frequent in monozygotic twins compared to dizygotic twins as well as an increased relative risk of chromosomal abnormalities and congenital malformation. Objective To investigate the association of asymmetry in leg extension power (LEP) with walking and standing balance. Design Cross-sectional analysis. Setting Research laboratory. Participants Healthy female twins (N=419), ages 63 to 75 years. Interventions Not applicable. The purpose of the study was to investigate the role of behavioral, psychological, and social factors in understanding age-related differences in physical and mental health.
