Four to five million Germans suffer from diabetes mellitus, and worldwide there are about 100 million people that suffer with the disease. In diabetic patients, dry eye and other ocular surface diseases occur more often than in healthy subjects. Very little is known about the alterations in tears caused by diabetes mellitus, or its influence on the pathogenesis of e.g., the dry eye disease.
