Summary Environmental signals shape host physiology and fitness. Microbiota-derived cues are required to program conventional dendritic cells (cDCs) during the steady state so that they can promptly respond and initiate adaptive immune responses when encountering pathogens. However, the molecular underpinnings of microbiota-guided instructive programs are not well understood. Induction of RAGE Shedding by Activation of G Protein-Coupled Receptors

The multiligand Receptor for Advanced Glycation End products (RAGE) is involved in various pathophysiological processes, including diabetic inflammatory conditions and Alzheimers disease. Full-length RAGE, a cell surface-located type I membrane protein, can proteolytically be converted by metalloproteinases ADAM10 and MMP9 into a soluble RAGE form. Moreover, administration of recombinant soluble RAGE suppresses activation of cell surface-located RAGE by trapping RAGE ligands. ABSTRACT Objective: to study the psychometric properties of an adaptive disease response questionnaire for use with Spanish children with type 1 diabetes; to analyse this response in this sample and to observe the relationship between adaptive response and levels of anxiety-depression. Method: a total of 100 patients with type 1 diabetes aged between nine and 16 years (M=12.28, SD=1.78) participated in the study, of which 59% were children. Anti-inflammatory and joint protective effects of extra-virgin olive-oil polyphenol extract in experimental arthritis

The consumption of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) in Mediterranean countries has shown beneficial effects. A wide range of evidence indicates that phenolic compounds present in EVOO are endowed with anti-inflammatory properties. In this work, we evaluated the effects of EVOO-polyphenol extract (PE) in a model of rheumatoid arthritis, the collagen-induced arthritis model in mice. On day 0, DBA-1/J mice were immunized with bovine type II collagen. On day 21, mice received a booster injection. PE (100 and 200 mg/kg) was orally administered once a day from days 29 to 41 to arthritic mice. Motoneurons of the stapedius muscle in the guinea pig middle ear: Afferent and efferent transmitters

The objective of the present study was to identify efferent and afferent transmitters of motoneurons of the stapedius muscle of the middle ear in order to gain more insight into the neuronal regulation of the muscle. To identify motoneurons, we injected the fluorescent neuronal tracer Fluorogold (FG) into the muscle after preparation of the middle ear in adult guinea pigs. Upon terminal uptake and retrograde neuronal transport, we observed FG in neurons located medial and ventral to the nucleus of the facial nerve ipsilateral to the injection site. Abstract The role of endogenous nitric oxide (NO) in N -methyl- d -aspartate (NMDA)-induced modulation of serotonin (5-HT) release in the striatum of freely moving rats has been studied using microdialysis technique. Abstract Objective: To test the hypothesis that some metalloproteinases (MMP-2, MMP-9) and inducible nitric oxide synthetase (iNOS) enzymes in dental pulp samples do not vary when subjected to orthodontic treatment. Spectrum of mutations of the LPL gene identified in Italy in patients with severe hypertriglyceridemia.

Background: Monogenic hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) may result from mutations in some genes which impair the intravascular lipolysis of triglyceride (TG)-rich lipoproteins mediated by the enzyme Lipoprotein lipase (LPL). Mutations in the LPL gene are the most frequent cause of monogenic HTG (familial chylomicronemia) with recessive transmission. Methods: The LPL gene was resequenced in 149 patients with severe HTG (TG>10mmol/L) and 106 patients with moderate HTG (TG>4.5 and <10mmol/L) referred to tertiary Lipid Clinics in Italy. SummaryThe aim of the Epidemiological project “Ventimiglia di Sicilia” is to identify the cardiovascular risk factors in a Sicilian population with a low risk profile and healthy nutritional habits. The risk of cardiovascular mortality in older subjects (over 60 years of age) is presented for an 11 year follow-up. Females showed higher prevalence of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, obesity and higher levels of total, LDL and HDL cholesterol, factor VII activity and fibrinogen compared to males.
