Switching spatial scale reveals dominance-dependent social foraging tactics in a wild primate

2017

When foraging in a social group, individuals are faced with the choice of sampling their environment directly or exploiting the discoveries of others. The evolutionary dynamics of this trade-off have been explored mathematically through the producer-scrounger game, which has highlighted socially exploitative behaviours as a major potential cost of group living. However, our understanding of the tight interplay that can exist between social dominance and scrounging behaviour is limited. To date, only two theoretical studies have explored this relationship systematically, demonstrating that because scrounging requires joining a competitor at a resource, it should become exclusive to high-rank…

Inhibition of small G proteins of the Rho family by statins orClostridium difficiletoxin B enhances cytokine-mediated induction of NO synthase II

2000

In order to investigate the involvement of Ras and/or Rho proteins in the induction of the inducible isoform of nitric oxide synthase (NOS II) we used HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) and Clostridium difficile toxin B (TcdB) as pharmacological tools. Statins indirectly inhibit small G proteins by preventing their essential farnesylation (Ras) and/or geranylgeranylation (Rho). In contrast, TcdB is a glucosyltransferase and inactivates Rho-proteins directly. Human A549/8- and DLD-1 cells as well as murine 3T3 fibroblasts were preincubated for 18 h with statins (1–100 μM) or TcdB (0.01–10 ng ml−1). Then NOS II expression was induced by cytokines. NOS II mRNA was measured after 4–8 h by R…

Mtlinteracts with members of Egfr signaling and cell adhesion genes in the Drosophila eye

2011

Mtl is a member of the Rho family of small GTPases in Drosophila. It was shown that Mtl is involved in planar cell polarity (PCP) establishment, together with other members of the same family like Cdc42, Rac1, Rac2 and RhoA. However, while Rac1, Rac2 and RhoA function downstream of Dsh in Fz/PCP signaling and upstream of a JNK cassette, Mtl and Cdc42 do not. To determine the functional context of Mtl during PCP establishment in the Drosophila eye, we performed a loss-of-function screen to search for dominant modifiers of a sev>Mtl rough eye phenotype. In addition, genetic interaction assays with candidate genes were also carried out. Our results show that Mtl interacts genetically with memb…

Metabotropic glutamate receptors activate phospholipase D in astrocytes through a protein kinase C-dependent and Rho-independent pathway.

2003

Metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) are G protein-coupled receptors that mediate phospholipase D (PLD) activation in brain, but the mechanism underlying this response remains unclear. Here we used primary cultures of astrocytes as a cell model to explore the mechanism that links mGluRs to PLD. Glutamate activated both phospholipase C (PLC) and PLD with equal potency and this effect was mimicked by L-cysteinesulfinic acid, a putative neurotransmitter previously shown to activate mGluRs coupled to PLD, but not PLC, in adult brain. PLD activation by glutamate was dependent on Ca(2+) mobilization and fully blocked by both protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitors and PKC down-regulation, suggesti…

Rocking behaviour of multi-block columns subjected to pulse-typeground motion accelerations

2016

Ancient columns, made with a variety of materials such as marble, granite, stone or masonry are an important part of theEuropean cultural heritage. In particular columns of ancient temples in Greece and Sicily which support only the architrave arecharacterized by small axial load values. This feature together with the slenderness typical of these structural members clearlyhighlights as the evaluation of the rocking behaviour is a key aspect of their safety assessment and maintenance. It has to be notedthat the rocking response of rectangular cross-sectional columns modelled as monolithic rigid elements, has been widely investigatedsince the first theoretical study carried out by Housner (19…

Slāpekļa oksīda metabolītu koncentrācija pacientiem ar 1.tipa cukura diabētu

2017

Common variants at VRK2 and TCF4 conferring risk of schizophrenia

2011

To access publisher full text version of this article. Please click on the hyperlink in Additional Links field. Common sequence variants have recently joined rare structural polymorphisms as genetic factors with strong evidence for association with schizophrenia. Here we extend our previous genome-wide association study and meta-analysis (totalling 7 946 cases and 19 036 controls) by examining an expanded set of variants using an enlarged follow-up sample (up to 10 260 cases and 23 500 controls). In addition to previously reported alleles in the major histocompatibility complex region, near neurogranin (NRGN) and in an intron of transcription factor 4 (TCF4), we find two novel variants show…

Sentence-Level Effects of Literary Genre: Behavioral and Electrophysiological Evidence

2017

The current study used event-related brain potentials (ERPs) and behavioral measures to examine effects of genre awareness on sentence processing and evaluation. We hypothesized that genre awareness modulates effects of genre-typical manipulations. We manipulated instructions between participants, either specifying a genre (poetry) or not (neutral). Sentences contained genre-typical variations of semantic congruency (congruent/incongruent) and morpho-phonological features (archaic/contemporary inflections). Offline ratings of meaningfulness (n=64/group) showed higher average ratings for semantically incongruent sentences in the poetry vs. neutral condition. ERPs during sentence reading (n=2…

Ciència i literatura.
