How to read a recipe: the semiotic point of view

2020

Writing a recipe is no easy task. It requires great care to render those various steps clearly, placing them in order, explaining the reasons for their importance in achieving the final result. However, over time the technique for writing a recipe, and consequently for composing an entire recipe book, has not just been perfected, but has reached fairly stable standards that, when reproduced, make teaching others to cook using the written word a fairly common practice. So, this article try to answer to the answers: How are recipes structured? What order do they follow when describing a culinary procedure?

The Influence of Sports on Cognitive Task Performance – A Critical Overview

2013

The potential effect of different methods on cognitive performance is of great interest to scientific researchers. In addition to drugs, nutrition and sleeping behavior, extensive research has focused on different kinds of sports and exercise and their potential to enhance cognitive task performance. In this chapter, I will give the reader an overview of studies dealing with athletic activities of healthy people and their effects on cognitive task performance. Furthermore, I present and discuss limitations and problems found in these studies. One problem that I point out that makes the comparison of the study results difficult is the heterogeneous study design regarding mode, duration and i…

Exploring Training Options for RF Sensing Using CSI

2018

This work analyzes human behavior recognition approaches using WiFi channel state information from the perhaps less usual point of view of training and calibration needs. With the help of selected literature examples, as well as with more detailed experimental insights on our own Doppler spectrum-based approach for physical motion/presence/cardinality detection, we first classify the diverse forms of training so far employed into three main categories (trained, trained-once, and training-free). We further discuss under which conditions it is possible to move toward lighter forms of calibration or even succeed in devising fully untrained model-based solutions. Our take home messages are main…

Critical Theoretical Concerns

2016

This chapter analyses centres on the number of critical theoretical questions that are left open without being properly clarified, nuanced and addressed in the previous chapters. The important point in this chapter is to clearly communicate to the reader the existence of potential limitations in the present analysis. Moreover, the chapter further clarifies the basic assumptions and premises on which the book’s arguments are built.

The translation of Italian verb-particle constructions into French. The case of "Caos Calmo"

2020

Italian verb-particle constructions (VPCs) are generally formed of a verb base (V) and a locative particle (P). In French VPCs are less productive than in Italian, since their constituents are subject to strict combinatorial restrictions. In this paper, the morphosyntactic structures that are most often used to translate Italian VPCs into French will be determined. In order to do so, an Italian-French parallel corpus consisting of the novel Caos calmo (Veronesi, 2005) and its translation will be analysed. Firstly, an inventory of the VPCs that were found within the corpus will be offered. Secondly, these constructions will be analysed under a quantitative and qualitative point of view. Thir…

2021

Abstract This paper reports on a teaching innovation using participant-generated drawings. Experienced managers were asked to produce a drawing to illustrate their work from an accounting perspective. The drawings were then used to make the managerial context of the participants the explicit starting point for personalized executive learning. This study is the first in the sphere of accounting education and research to take drawing seriously as a learning method. The results of the experiment show how drawing can be further used as a tool in management education by facilitating the visualization of the managerial contexts participants work within.

Challenging the negative images of Haiti at a pre-visit stage using visual online learning materials

2016

Post-conflict destinations can struggle to attract visitors because of their negative image. Research addressing this remains limited. The same can be said about the education of tourists. This research paper contributes to the literature in both areas as it examines the proposition that the education of tourists at a pre-visit stage using online, game-based material could be effective in challenging the negative perception of these destinations. From a destination management point of view, this paper offers an alternative to existing promotional material as there is little evidence at the moment that existing strategies are effective. From a conceptual point of view, this paper contributes…
