Dimethylsulfoxide as carrier in enzyme cytochemistry.
1971
Addition of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) to the incubation medium of succinate dehydrogenase in a concentration of 10% enhances the staining reaction in the hyphae of the fungus Cercosporella herpotrichoides after an incubation period of 15 min. Controls without DMSO remain unstained. DMSO causes a rapid penetration of the components of the medium through the mucilage that covers the hyphae.
Antioxidative succinobucol–sterol conjugates: Crystal structures and pseudosymmetry in the crystals
2012
Abstract An extensive study to attach succinobucol to sterols has provided conjugates which comprise two pharmaceutically important compounds into one entity where the components are expected to have a synergistic effect. The motivation to design these novel conjugates was the need to broaden the armamentarium of current agents used in the treatment of atherosclerotic diseases and type 2 diabetes. In desire for detailed information of these compounds in solid state, which also have an influence to their physiological activity, systematic crystallization experiments were performed and as a result, X-ray quality single crystals were obtained from four succinobucol–sterol conjugates. All of th…
Spectrophotometric Determination of the Antihistamines, Carbinoxamine Maleate and Doxylamine Succinate, in anN-Cetylpyridinium Chloride Micellar Medi…
1996
Abstract The pyridine antihistamines carbinoxamine maleate and doxylamine succinate were derivatized by hydrolysis with cyanogen bromide and coupling with aniline to form a polymethine dye, and determined by colorimetry. In a micellar cationic medium of N-cetylpyridinium chloride (NCPC), the reaction times were reduced and the sensitivities improved. In 0.1 M NCPC the apparent molar absorptivities of the derivatives were 5,900 and 3,500 M−1 cm−1, and the limits of detection (as 3s) were 8.6x10−7 M and 1.7x106 M, for carbinoxamine and doxylamine, respectively. The sensitivity was enhanced in a three- to six-fold factor with respect to a non-micellar medium. The reproducibility was 0.8% for 1…

Anthropology of misery: poverty and the media
2010
The present work explores the connections between the Argentinean press and the ear - thquake that struck Haiti in early 2010. It…
La imposible mirada
1985
1994
This article deals with two perplexing questions that arise from the viewing of The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (John Ford, 1962): the use of flashback and the presence of nostalgia, an emotion foreign to epic poetry. 7he first points to the existence of a mythical past estranged from the present, from which civilization arises and which is symbolized by the train which makes its appearance at the beginning and the end of the film. Nostalgia introduces a painful note in the present-day characters which may be defined both as old-age in a physical sense and the fact that they belong to another, legendary world. We show how these two elements converge in the splendid metaphor of the cactus fl…

Effects of succinylation on thermal induced amyloid formation in Concanavalin A.
2007
We have recently shown that upon slight thermal destabilization the legume lectin Concanavalin A may undergo two different aggregation processes, leading, respectively, to amyloid fibrils at high pH and amorphous aggregates at low pH. Here we present an experimental study on the amyloid aggregation of Succinyl Concanavalin A, which is a dimeric active variant of Concanavalin. The results show that, as for the native protein, the fibrillation process appears to be favoured by alkaline pH, far from the isoelectric point of the protein. Moreover, it strongly depends on temperature and requires large conformational changes both at secondary and tertiary structure level. With respect to the nati…
