Magnetic field control of gas-liquid mass transfer in ferrofluids

Abstract Gas-liquid mass transfer plays a key role in a broad range of industrial processes. The magnetic field control over the morphology of the gas-liquid interface and solute transport is an attractive feature if it can be realized efficiently. However, the magnetic properties of typical liquids and gases are rather weak. The experimental investigation is carried out to evaluate the effect of the magnetic field, which is mediated by magnetic nanoparticles, on the gas-liquid mass exchange during the sparging run through a hydrocarbon ferrofluid. Lead evaporation instabilities and failure mechanisms of the micro oven at the GTS-LHC ECR ion source at CERN

The GTS-LHC ECR ion source (named after the Grenoble Test Source and the Large Hadron Collider) at CERN provides heavy ion beams for the chain of accelerators from Linac3 up to the LHC for high energy collision experiments and to the Super Proton Synchrotron for fixed target experiments. During the standard operation, the oven technique is used to evaporate lead into the source plasma to produce multiple charged lead ion beams. Intensity and stability are key parameters for the beam, and the operational experience is that some of the source instabilities can be linked to the oven performance. Spontaneous order in ensembles of rotating magnetic droplets

Ensembles of elongated magnetic droplets in a rotating field are studied experimentally. In a given range of field strength and frequency the droplets form rotating structures with a triangular order - rotating crystals. A model is developed to describe ensembles of several droplets, taking into account the hydrodynamic interactions between the rotating droplets in the presence of a solid wall below the rotating ensemble. A good agreement with the experimentally observed periodic dynamics for an ensemble of four droplets is obtained. Negative differential resistance and threshold-switching in conical nanopores with KF solutions

Negative differential resistance (NDR) phenomena are under-explored in nanostructures operating in the liquid state. We characterize experimentally the NDR and threshold switching phenomena observed when conical nanopores are immersed in two identical KF solutions at low concentration. Sharp current drops in the nA range are obtained for applied voltages exceeding thresholds close to 1 V and a wide frequency window, which suggests that the threshold switching can be used to amplify small electrical perturbations because a small change in voltage typically results in a large change in current. Use of bus architecture based communication with increasing processing elements in System-on-Chip (SoC) leads to severe degradation of performance and speed of the system. Silicon dosimeters based on Floating Gate Sensor: design, implementation and characterization

A rad-hard monolithic dosimeter has been implemented and characterized in a standard 180 nm CMOS technology. The radiation sensor (C-sensor) is based on a Floating Gate (FG) MOS discharge principle. The output current is processed by a current-to-voltage (I/V) interface and then converted by a 5-bit flash ADC. The dosimeter is re-usable (FG can be recharged) and can detect a dose up to 1krad (Si) with a resolution of 30rad (Si) typical over temperature 0 to 85°C range. The ADC allows easy further signal processing for calibration and averaging, etc. The power consumption of C-sensor plus I/V interface is < 2mW from a 5 V power supply. Refractive index controlled by film morphology and free carrier density in undoped ZnO through sol-pH variation

Abstract Zinc oxide thin films, prepared by the sol-gel process, were deposited on glass substrate using spin coating technique. The sol-pH effect on the optical parameters was studied for alkaline sol. The surface roughness was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and varied from 20 to 40 nm. The optical transmission measurements were carried out to evaluate the behavior of the extinction coefficient and the refractive index. An exponential decay of the refractive index ‘n’ as a function of wavelength was observed. The refractive index increases slightly when the pH increases to pH = 9.5 where it reaches its maximum. Diagrammatic Expansion for Positive Spectral Functions in the Steady-State Limit

Recently, a method was presented for constructing self-energies within many-body perturbation theory that are guaranteed to produce a positive spectral function for equilibrium systems, by representing the self-energy as a product of half-diagrams on the forward and backward branches of the Keldysh contour. We derive an alternative half-diagram representation that is based on products of retarded diagrams. Our approach extends the method to systems out of equilibrium. When a steady-state limit exists, we show that our approach yields a positive definite spectral function in the frequency domain.

A Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) is one of the most important scanning probe tools available to study and manipulate matter at the nanoscale. In a STM, a tip is scanned on top of a surface with a separation of a few \AA. Often, the tunneling current between tip and sample is maintained constant by modifying the distance between the tip apex and the surface through a feedback mechanism acting on a piezoelectric transducer.
