The place of frailty and vulnerability in the surgical risk assessment: should we move from complexity to simplicity?
2018
Due to aging of the world population, older patients accessing health services are becoming continuously more frequent. This has increased the interest in assessing frailty and vulnerability in all specialties and general medicine. Although the term frailty has been recognized for over 30 years, there is not yet a universally recognized definition, and different care providers assess frailty and vulnerability with dissimilar tools, from very complex to very simple validated scales. Being treated with respect and dignity at the right time and place is the key message, as well as after undergoing a global evaluation both in urgency/emergency and in programmed surgery for all older surgical pa…
Determination of the modulus of elasticity of bone material by an acoustical approach at the forearm distinguishes women with and without vertebral f…
2002
The modulus of elasticity is a parameter characterizing fracture stability of bone independent of bone mineral density. Measurement of acoustical properties of the forearm by determination of the resonant frequency of the ulna in longitudinal direction as a function of sound transmission velocity after adjustment of the measuring result by ulna length yields information about the modulus of elasticity. It was the aim of this study to investigate whether this parameter may distinguish between subjects with and without vertebral fractures independent of bone mineral density. Fifty females (61.1 +/- 9.1 years) were enrolled into the study, 25 with, and 25 age-matched without prevalent osteopor…
The vulnerability to exploitation of women migrant workers in agriculture in the EU: The need for a human rights and gender based approach
2018
This study, commissioned by the European Parliament’s Policy Department for Citizens' Rights and Constitutional Affairs at the request of the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality, explores the working conditions of migrant women in agriculture in the EU, focusing on some case studies in Italy and Spain. In particular, it aims to examine the factors that render women vulnerable to exploitation, paying attention to gendered dynamics and power relations. The study contends that to prevent and combat exploitation in agriculture it is necessary to implement concerted actions aimed at tackling, from a human rights and gender perspective, the structural factors of a socio-economic syste…
Environmental enrichment reverts the effects of continuous or intermittent perinatal alcohol exposure. Focus on alcohol vulnerability and affectivity…
2015
Alcohol consumption during perinatal periods is common, despite the warning of adverse effects on the foetal development. In female rats, the intermittent pattern of alcohol consumption is responsible for higher drinking levels and more profound disruption of maternal care than traditional continuous free-access paradigm, which can have persistent effects on the offspring. The environmental enrichment, a powerful form of experience-dependent plasticity that allows high cognitive, motor and sensory stimulations, is helpful for recovering from different neurological pathologies. Thus, this study aimed at exploring the effects of environmental enrichment on alcohol vulnerability and affective …
Antropocene e democrazia
2019
The Anthropocene and its problems unveil and exacerbate some vulnerabilities of democratic theory and practice, particular in its liberal version. Both liberal democracies’ failures and their most promising attempts at managing these problems expose them to powerful legitimacy challenges. The Anthropocene is thus for liberal democracies what Scylla and Carybdis were for Ulysses and his crew: a predicament whereby whichever direction is chosen will lead to serious difficulties and risks, and possibly to significant damages and losses.
Comparison of outer membrane protein profiles of Vibrio vulnificus biotypes 1 and 2.
1993
The outer membrane proteins of 17 Vibrio vulnificus biotype 2 strains from Japanese and European eels, and 12 biotype 1 strains from clinical and environmental sources have been compared. The overall profile in both biotypes was similar, and a major protein band of molecular mass 36 kDa was detected in the majority of the strains. Differences in the minor bands allowed differentiation of strains from different origins, suggesting that outer membrane protein profiles could be useful as epidemiological markers in the species V. vulnificus. Immunoblotting with antisera to whole cells of selected strains of biotypes 1 and 2 showed a strong antigenic response to outer membrane proteins 66, 60, 4…
Role of the virulence plasmid pR99 and the metalloprotease Vvp in resistance of Vibrio vulnificus serovar E to eel innate immunity
2007
Vibrio vulnificus biotype 2 serovar E (VSE) is a bacterial pathogen that produces a haemorrhagic septicaemia called vibriosis in eels. Its ability to grow in blood is conferred by a recently described virulence plasmid [Lee CT, Amaro C, Wu KM, Valiente E, Chang YF, Tsai SF, et al. A common virulence plasmid in biotype 2 Vibrio vulnificus and its dissemination aided by a conjugal plasmid. Journal of Bacteriology, submitted for publication.]. In this study, we analyzed the role of this plasmid together with the role played by the metalloprotease (Vvp) in the interaction between bacteria and eel innate immunity. To this end, we compared and statistically analyzed the differences in resistance …
A matter of style? testing the moderating effect of driving styles on the relationship between job strain and work-related crashes of professional dr…
2020
Abstract Different empirical studies suggest that both job strain and driving styles are significant contributors to the work-related traffic crashes suffered by professional drivers. Nevertheless, the current evidence falls considerably short when explaining why driving styles may modify (or not) the relationship between occupational stressors and professional drivers’ safety outcomes. The aim of this study was to examine whether driving styles moderate the effect of job strain on professional drivers’ Work Traffic Crashes (WTCs). This research was performed using the data collected from a sample of 753 professional drivers, responding to a self-report questionnaire on job strain (work str…
