Brief mindfulness session improves mood and increases salivary oxytocin in psychology students

2020

Mindfulness-based interventions (MBI) have been shown to be effective in increasing empathy in health professionals. Yet, more research is needed to analyse the specific influence of mindfulness exercises on biological variables involved in empathy, such as the biological system of oxytocin activity. In this study, we analyse the effects of a brief mindfulness session on positive and negative affect, state anxiety and salivary oxytocin (sOXT) in psychology students (N = 68). In the experimental group (n = 42), a mindfulness session was performed that included different guided meditation exercises. In the control group (n = 26), an emotion recognition exercise was carried out, along with a s…

Haavoittuvuuden kudelmat : digitaalinen subjekti ja haavoittuvuus datavetoista yhteiskuntaa käsittelevässä tutkimuskirjallisuudessa

2021

Artikkelissa tarkastellaan sitä, millaisia merkityksiä haavoittuvuudelle on annettu datavetoista yhteiskuntaa ja digitaalista subjektia koskevassa tutkimuskirjallisuudessa. Artikkeli perustuu kirjallisuuskatsaukseen, joka on tehty vuosina 2015–2020 ilmestyneistä haavoittuvuutta datafikaation kontekstissa käsittelevistä tieteellisistä julkaisuista. Kirjallisuushaut tehtiin yhteiskuntatieteiden alojen keskeisistä tietokannoista ja digitaalisista kirjastoista. Hakujen pohjalta tutkimuskirjallisuus järjestettiin neljään teemakokonaisuuteen: 1) datavalvonnan tuottamat haavoittuvuudet, 2) data tietämisen tapana ja osallisuutena, 3) digitaalisten subjektien kategorisointi ja näkyvyyden säätely sek…

A fog-assisted system to defend against Sybils in vehicular crowdsourcing

2022

Technological advancements in vehicular transportation systems have led to the growth of novel paradigms, in which vehicles and infrastructures collaborate to infer high-level knowledge about phenomena of interest. Vehicular Social Network (VSN) is one such paradigm in which vehicular network entities are considered as part of an Online Social Network (OSN), paving the way for new services derived from social context. Although vehicular crowdsourcing has tremendous benefits, its deployment in real systems requires to solve important challenges including defense against Sybil attacks. This paper proposes a novel fog-assisted system that uses SybilDriver to minimize the presence of Sybil enti…

Can Integrated Care Help in Meeting the Challenges Posed on Our Health Care Systems by COVID-19? Some Preliminary Lessons Learned from the European V…

2020

The COVID-19 pandemic puts health and care systems under pressure globally. This current paper highlights challenges arising in the care for older and vulnerable populations in this context and reflects upon possible perspectives for different systems making use of nested integrated care approaches adapted during the work of the EU-funded project VIGOUR ("Evidence based Guidance to Scale-up Integrated Care in Europe", funded by the European Union's Health Programme 2014-2020 under Grant Agreement Number 826640).

Assessment of the Microbiological Quality of Groundwater in Three Regions of the Valencian Community (Spain)

2014

Urban groundwater development was traditionally constrained by concerns about its quality. This study was conducted in the regions of La Ribera Alta and Ribera Baja and La Plana de Requena-Utiel of the Valencian Community (Valencia, Spain) where population density, demand for drinking water and agricultural activities are high. Groundwater bodies (GWBs) are regarded as management areas within each territory, and were used to establish protection policies. This study analyzed eleven GWBs. We used two databases with microbiological measurements from 154 wells over a 7-year period (2004–2011), risk factors and groundwater information. Wells were grouped according to frequency of microbiologica…

Migrants' and refugees' health status and healthcare in Europe: A scoping literature review

2020

Abstract Background There is increasing attention paid to the arrival of migrants from outwith the EU region to the European countries. Healthcare that is universally and equably accessible needs to be provided for these migrants throughout the range of national contexts and in response to complex and evolving individual needs. It is important to look at the evidence available on provision and access to healthcare for migrants to identify barriers to accessing healthcare and better plan necessary changes. Methods This review scoped 77 papers from nine European countries (Austria, Cyprus, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Malta, Spain, and Sweden) in English and in country-specific languages i…

Isolation of a hemin and hemoglobin binding outer membrane protein of Vibrio vulnificus biotype 2 (serogroup E)

2006

The eel pathogen Vibrio vulnificus biotype 2 (serogroup E) is able to use hemin (Hm) or hemoglobin (Hb) as the sole iron source for growth in vitro and in vivo. The mechanism of heme-iron acquisition in this bacterium requires a direct interaction through binding sites on the bacterial surface (constitutive outer membrane proteins). Using affinity chromatography techniques, a unique protein of around 36.5 kDa was isolated from cell envelopes of E86 strain regardless of the affinity ligand used, hemoglobin or hemin. This protein was purified from both iron-enriched and iron-restricted grown cells. These results support the hypothesis that in this pathogen Hm- and Hb-iron acquisition is media…
